Gerard Martirano scored with 2.9 seconds remaining to give Kennedy an 8-7 win over Monsignor Farrell on Thursday in the CHSAA A City Championship.
“Brian Devey made a great save, and I knew we had a shot,” said Martirano, who had five goals and one assist. “He had a nice outlet, and we got it down to the other end quickly. Once I got the ball in my stick, all I could see was the back of the net. I didn’t know the exact amount of time left, but I knew the game was almost over.
“I just went crazy, and it really didn’t settle in until way after the game that I actually scored with 2.9 seconds left. And it also proved that all the hard work I’ve put in over the past four years have paid off.”
Kennedy hosts St. Mary’s on Tuesday in a CHSAA state title game. The regular-season meeting was a 16-6 win by the Somers-based Gaels.
Alex Souza, Will Martirano and Henry Flocco had the other three Kennedy goals. Devey finished with 10 saves.
