Section 1 Tournament
No. 9 Wappingers (9-8) at No. 1 North Rockland (12-4)
Players to watch: A/MF Danny Kugler (W) and FOGO John Dapolito (NRk).
A thought: The Red Raiders need to play from in front so that nerves that come with being a top seed are not a issue.
Prediction: North Rockland 6, Wappingers 5
Next: New Rochelle or White Plains
No. 5 New Rochelle (10-4) at No. 4 White Plains (11-5)
Players to watch: A Kevin McGee (WP) and MF Jason Ceneus (NR).
A thought: The Tigers will test all but a few team’s patience with a ball-control offense and have enough athletes to keep up with a team that likes to score unsettled goals.
Prediction: White Plains 9-5
Next: North Rockland or Wappingers
No. 6 Mahopac (9-8) at No. 3 Mamaroneck (10-6)
Players to watch: LSM Brendan Hynes (Ma) and MF Peter Conley (Mk).
A thought: Defending a title is hard work, and the Indians are coming back with plenty of purpose after losing to the Tigers in last year’s championship game.
Prediction: Mahopac 6-5
Next: Lakeland/Panas or Arlington
No. 7 Lakeland/Panas (7-10) at No. 2 Arlington (11-5)
Players to watch: MF Brian Prunty (L/P) and G J.D. Colorusso (Arl).
A thought: I’m thinking upset because the Rebels are playing with more passion and precision than they had in a season-opening loss to the Admirals.
Prediction: Lakeland/Panas 9-7
Next: Mahopac or Mamaroneck
No. 8 Brewster (10-7) at No. 1 Yorktown (14-2)
Players to watch: MF Brian Prestreau (Yk) and MF Liam DaRos (Bw).
A thought: The Bears are going to need Mike Honey to do his best Herb Brooks imitation because the Huskers do have something in common with a once dominant Russian hockey program.
Prediction: Yorktown 13-5
Next: Byram Hills or Somers
No. 5 Byram Hills (9-7) at No. 4 Somers (9-7)
Players to watch: MF Jake Kaiser (BH) and MF Alex Corpolongo (So).
A thought: I’m thinking the Tukers learned not to let an unfamiliar team climb back into a game and will shut the door this time.
Prediction: Somers 9-6
Next: Yorktown or Brewster
No. 6 Nyack (9-7) at No. 3 John Jay (10-6)
Players to watch: A Brennen Ramos (Nk) and LSM Jack Lambert (JJ).
A thought: Nyack is playing with a lot of confidence, which is exactly what John Jay needs going forward.
Prediction: John Jay 10-5
Next: Eastchester or Rye
No. 10 Eastchester (9-7) at No. 2 Rye (13-3)
Players to watch: A John Guido (Ea) and MF Chris Santangelo (R)
A thought: Getting out to a comfortable lead in the opening minutes would serve the Garnets well against this team that is looking for a reason to believe.
Prediction: Rye 11-6
Next: Nyack or John Jay
No. 8 Putnam Valley (10-7) at No. 1 Bronxville (16-1)
Players to watch: A John van de Veerdonk (PV) and Jack Grass (Bx).
A thought: I really believe the Broncos will be playing with even more purpose because they sense a state title is within reach.
Prediction: Bronxville 10-6
Next: Pelham or Croton
No. 12 Pelham (7-9) at No. 4 Croton-Harmon (13-4)
Players to watch: A Zack Mermelstein (Pel) and A/MF Alex Starr (CH).
A thought: They were only separated by a goal in the regular season, but the Tigers need this win to take the next step as a program.
Prediction: Croton-Harmon 9-8
Next: Putnam Valley or Bronxville
No. 6 Irvington (11-5) at No. 3 Hen Hud (12-5)
Players to watch: A Dillon Morley (Irv) and A Kevin McDermott (HH).
A thought: The Bulldogs need to be very careful with every possession or they’re likely to fall into a deep hole before halftime.
Prediction: Hen Hud 11-6
Next: Keio or Pleasantville
No. 10 Keio (9-6) at No. 2 Pleasantville (13-4)
Players to watch: MF Joshin Sone (Ke) and A Brendan Halloran (Pv)
A thought: The pesky Unicorns will not back off, so the Panthers need to make certain they keep the intensity high.
Prediction: Pleasantville 9-4
Next: Irvington or Hen Hud
