In case you’re looking for something to fill the void, members of Ireland’s national team will be playing an 8 p.m. exhibition on Friday at Middletown High School against a college select team. The game is a fundraiser, and a $5 donation will go toward growing the game on the Emerald Isle.
Players will also be on hand for a free postgame buffet at Brian’s Backyard BBQ.
Ireland has been prepping for the European Championships, which get under way later this month in Amsterdam. The team is coached by a band of dedicated men from this side of the Atlantic, including current Scarsdale High School coach Tim Weir.
Tom Prior, Richie Moran and Bob Deegan are coaching, as well.
“Since we started this in 2003, Ireland has come from something like a third-grade team all the way to a low-level college team,” Weir said. “There are guys flying over there every couple of months to do clinics with the kids, and the guys in Ireland are doing a very good job. It’s getting closer to becoming a national sport.”
