There are not a lot of games on the schedule because of Passover and Easter, but we do have some compelling match-ups.
I’m heading down the road in a little to watch John Jay and Rye, so let the complaints begin. This will make three Indians games in a week, and there’s no way I’m missing next week’s showdown with Somers. It’s an overdose of Beck and Branca, I know, but the schedule is top heavy with important John Jay games.
After next week, I promise, no more Indians stories for at least 72 hours unless some rogue lacrosse parents show up at the superintendent’s office with lawyers.
Yorktown is down in Maryland, playing Fallston (1-4) and would no doubt like to keep the momentum going with visits to Chaminade and Smithtown West coming up next week. Somers is under the lights against New Canann (0-1), and I’m sure nobody’s forgotten the drama in a 15-11 win by the Tuskers last year. Tappan Zee is looking to remain undefeated before testing itself against Hen Hud and Brewster. Mamaroneck is again playing a pretty good non-league schedule in hopes of strengthening the program and will be hosting Fairfield-Ludlow (0-1), which beat the Tigers 8-4 last spring.
Please leave a score if you’re out watching. Check my Twitter feed during the day, I’ll post updates from my game along with any other tidbits I come across.

I am a bit confused. You said overdose of Branca and Beck but the former didnt see the field. I am shocked and worried about the Coaches’ priorities since in one wide sweep they sabotaged their own D1 goalie’s shot at All American. Maybe I’m of an old school Jay mindset, but coaches don’t generally look for ways to mess with their players’ heads; I guess this coach doesn’t realize that his predecessors’ fates were sealed by this same kind of reckless disregard for the high school students they coach. Poorly played gentlemen. Anything I’m missing?
Not missing a thing. Just like when they cut FOUR skilled, hard working, well deserving seniors from this years squad! Coaches’ priorities?
Congrats to J on the win.
This season, Rye plays a freshman and numbers of sophs and juniors so hopefully came out of this close game vs a top quality team with building confidence. In particular thought FO’s were strong and the play of soph goalie White was terrific and R’s close D made some nice plays on J.
Having not seen J play but aware of their good preseason play and very close game with Town, I’m sure they are capable of much stronger play. Seemed like they were “flat” out there. Lambert—-well he just stands out—period.
Surprised per jjindianGIRL above not to see Branca in goal.
I feel bad for Branca he has worked so hard!!! Tim should know better because this is the stuff he got fired for at Somers..
Here we go again … Branca did not practice yesterday, according to his teammates, and did not play today because he was still feeling the effects of a body shot on Thursday at Suffern, according to his coach. Let’s go with that unless somebody is willing to go on the record with a different story.
Tappan Zee 8, Ossining 4. Any chance you go see TZ play Hen Hud next Wednesday @henhud and see if they’re for real?
Seriously?????? John Jay Fans will NEVER be happy. Between The Savs and Schurr/Nolan, you
have had some of the best and most successful coaches in Section One . All you have to
do is take your parent goggles off for a few minutes and it is easy to see.
Tim is a quality man and coach that any reasonable parent would love to have coach their son.
He has much to teach about the game, commitment, and more importantly life.
As far as Branca’s consideration for All-American is concerned, I saw a freshman from
Arlington put two in on him just a few games ago!....freshman
Tim teach lax let the parents teach life!
Branca hurt his leg against Suffern and that is why he did not play according to LaxLessons.com. This blog has gone from a joke to a complete joke and becomes even worse when the so called reporter who was at the game, Mike Doherty, speculates as well instead of getting the facts.
Just The Facts
Go back and read my earlier comment … there is no speculation. That’s a report with attribution from a reporter that was at the game. And it’s spelled Dougherty, get your facts straight.
JJIndiangirl – you are “worried about the coaches priorities?”
Since when are the Coaches priorities about getting a kid an All-American nod? Really? Who cares. That simple.
And I’m an old school coach and don’t know all the facts – so please correct me if I’m wrong – but they WON. Kid in goal was solid. So what did the coaches do wrong? Ever hear of Wally Pipp? Team first.
The GOAL is not to get the most ALL AMERICAN nominations – but to get the most WINS! Your mindset seems selfish. And to compare them to the old regime, shows your true colors!
Be a part of the team – or leave/watch…really that simple.
Northlax,
Hard working – NO
Skilled – NO.
If YOUR kid made the squad and was not playing you would be polluting this blog with similar vile. stop blaming the coaches – and accept reality. Don’t even know the specifics – but coaches don’t cut kids that can help the team win games. REALITY CHECK.
I know of the coaches and watch from afar (JJ fan and a son who graduated years ago) and don’t know the details. But what I do know is if they thought your kid could/would help the team he’d have been running around out there today.
Sorry – participation trophies stopped in 6th grade for my kids – and they threw them in the trash when they got them.
Slacrosse,
Thought JJ was a bit flat – and Rye was better than I expected. I don’t get too excited on early April games. I do know that Rye seemed really young (where can we see a roster?) – and their goalie was solid (JJ didn’t pressure him enough either).
Think I tipped you on Lambert a year or two ago under a different username (people keep stealing mine!).
Two last thoughts…Always think Rye will be a tougher out in May – and still think that. Didn’t notice one Dooley on the sidelines – who was the “other guy” – and why only one Dooley today?
Geepers,
Think Brian Dooley just had a kid. Other guy was Ken GiaQuinto who used to coach the JV and is now working with the varsity. IMO Lambert will see the field in a meaningful way very quickly at Hopkins.
Geepers,
Meant UNC for Lambert.
Mamaroneck-8 Ludlow-7
Brian Dooleys wife had a baby and he was at the hospital. His brother, Scott coached the team with help from Kenny Giaquinto
when I was coming up in coaching I got a huge huge help from Pete Kuczma. He got me a day in the minds of his sons Brian and Kevin as well as Coach Shurr. They spent hours of their time going over foundations for building a lacrosse program to make sure I was starting from the right spot. These guys aren’t only great coaches but great guys. Any one who wants to come on here questioning their character should take a look in the mirror
Tim Schurr,
I feel sorry for you my brother. After reading the unfortunate and apparently erroneous comments that some of your own parents said about you, I’m wondering if maybe it’s time for you to come home. I honestly don’t believe that parents in that neck of the woods deserve you. Those comments are a sad reflection on youth sports today. How I long for the days when we played for the love of it and for team success, not individual.
Tim- don’t ever forget that you’ll forever be part of a special elite family that’s had the honor to play lacrosse at Yorktown and you’ll always be welcomed home!
I wasn’t a fan when Coach Sav was forced out. Now it appears Coach Schurr might have one foot out the door. The parents of JJ just don’t seem to be happy with the 2nd best team in the Section behind Yorktown over the last 7+years. Keep in mind Yorktown is the Mt. Vernon of Lax in Section 1. To be on their toes is something to be extremely proud of.
The interesting question is what qualified/successful coach would want that job after the last two coaches have been forced out by the parents. I am not sure but I also believe the Coach before Sav was also forced out
I will echo the comments of those who posted here in Coach Schurr’s defense.
My son was coached by Tim in past years at JJ. He is a credit to high school coaches.
I don’t begrudge JJ for wanting to be #1- and I don’t think Tim is there to be second fiddle to Yorktown either. What’s appalling about JJindianGIRL’s comments is that they came after JJ WON! Hers and Northlax appear to be personal and have nothing to do with team success- so the “priorty” dig seems to be misdirected anger. It’s easy to take pot shots on a blog. Maybe you two should “man up” and say it to personally to Tim instead of looking foolish on here.
Geepers, your comments are right on the money!
JJ was a few broken clears away from beating Yorktown on Town’s home field and Branca’s play in goal was nothing short of exceptional. What “priority” would Tim have to NOT play that kid?
A good measure will be the 2nd game, I think the Jay parents are getting upset when the 2nd time around (when it really matters) the game doesnt go so well for them. All teams get better by the end of the season and thats scary for a team like ‘Town. The defense as a unit (yeah talented poles already) will really be clicking, the shots Branca will face will be much sharper (didn’t like some of the shots taken but it was the first game for ‘Town) but I think if these guys meet in the playoffs is JJ can stay within a few goals they should be happy with that because it will take an amazing coaching effort to win and a great effort to keep it close
If you watch the town v jj game on MSG you will see jj have too many players on the field twice and off sides twice.. Coaching???
if you watch a D1 college game now (coming down the stretch, not the first week of the season) they get caught with too many men on the field / offsides, you want to hold HS kids / Staffs to a higher standard ?
