A conversation between friends and rivals during a fall clinic was the spark that led to a boys lacrosse showcase that culminates tomorrow evening with a showdown between Somers and Lakeland/Panas.
It’s the first Communities Collide event.
Shrub Oak is bringing all of its teams over to Somers, and the next generation of lacrosse stars from those hotbeds will be on display, starting at 9 a.m.
“There was actually a slight connection between the two programs at the middle school level all ready in that they would hook up for extra games and scrimmages in the spring and fall,” said Tuskers coach Lew Janavey, who played lacrosse at Lakeland way back when. “This event came about when talking to some of the Shrub Oak guys during the fall at a clinic they wanted to know when the varsity game was set for. Then kinda as a side conversation, not thinking it would come to fruition, we said maybe that day more than just the varsity could play. Also knowing the possibility of my two kids playing on the same field where they come and watch practice and have gotten to know and look up to the JoJo’s and Rob Lombardos and Matt Deianas and Greg Petres did not hurt the process. Then we moved the JV game so we both can play on the same site. The Somers youth guys did not bat an eye they were also on board from the beginning. Jimmy Lindsay , who I’ve known for many years and I finalized all the details with the two programs, and here we are.”
There is a fund-raising component, as well, with 50-50 raffles along with a portion of t-shirt and concession sales going to Autism Speaks.
“My wife and I have been talking with another Somers parent about giving back to a charity at a home game for some time. We discussed the obvious situations that have affected us personally and many others. Cancer, depression, and childrens’ emotional, and learning disabilities. With April being Autism Awareness Month, we ran with that one. It’s also a situation that we are personally and professionally connected with each and every day.”
Here’s the schedule, and the weather is supposed to be almost perfect.
