yay
how is John Jay a spot ahead of Yorktown?? lol…..
Laxpower rankings are not even looked at anymore for high school because they are so unaccurate…
Yeah there’s no way that anyone can rationally MIX teams from different regions into one ranking. Better to just look at regional rankings put out buy local coaches, sportswriters that REALLY KNOW the teams and leave it at that!!
yea i agree, but having JJ a spot ahead of Ytown is pretty rediculous….
Agree with your comment but i had an email from someone from Baltimore who was complaining about Town being ranked one better then McDonough!! (please no debate about it being Town’s 2nd game of yr vs McDon’s 10th). ONLY point again is that these rankings are bogus.
John Jay # 1 in Section 1!
haha JJ #1 in the section is a very inaccurate and bold statement…..I think Town has #1 wrapped up for quite some time…
After next year JJ will be the stronger program for a couple of years, at least. JJ is now used to competing with-and often beating- Town. The Husker aura and mystique is gone. Next year Jay will be competitive with them and very strong relative to the section and there will be no doubt for the next few years after 2009.
As for this year, the Laxpower ranking means nothing on a row-by-row basis. It’s more about where you are generally in the ranking. Both teams should be happy to come out as top 25 teams. Section 1 fans should also be happy that there are 4 teams in the top 100 (with a 5th, L/P at 101)- it’s been a while since the section has had so many teams in double digits in the ranking. If Jay were one rank below Town I would still be happy for them (although the snub to Town is a little amusing). There is no question that Yorktown had a good team this year and is deserving of a national ranking.
Another example ?? for the national rankings. St. Andrews of florida ranked 22 right before JJ and then Town!!
It seems like SA murdered NO NAME teams EXCEPT for their 12th game where they beat Boys Latin (Balt) 7-6 and in their 13th game where they lost to McDonough (Balt) 7-5. Yes they must be good to have those two scores but those two games + the other easy wipe-outs should not result in a 22nd ranking!!!
Yes Town lost big to McDonough but it was ONLY Town’s 2nd game, not their 13th!! Had it been #13 I think its very fair to surmise that the game would have been much more competitive with Town playing on a “level” playing field and having a fair chance to win. I’d say the same for JJ vs McD if they had played.
The thing is guys laxpower doesn’t count head to head matchups. And while all of JJ’s losses were close and were the 6 closest game JJ’s played, Yorktown’s had an up and down season and have had some horrible losses. JJ also had all or most of their wins be blowouts while Yorktown had a few very close games. I don’t agree with it but it’s understandable.
I totally agree with Gilman still being #1 btw. If you think this is bogus, look at Inside Lacrosse’s rankings, they have Brother Rice at #1 and teams like Carthage, who was blown out in the final, in the rankings instead of JJ or Yorktown or St. Anthony’s or Garden City. Brother Rice is only #1 because they’re undefeated, which imo is stupid. Face it guys no rankings are completely accurate and most people will be dissatisfied with something.
Laxolution,
The “Town aura and mystique is gone” quote is a very rediculous comment….I do believe the swept the section AGAIN, beat nationally powered teams, beat ur JJ boys AGAIN, and made it to the class A state semi final game….i’d wouldnt say the mystique is gone just yet bud…dont hate the champs and dont be jealous just bc you werent lucky enough to put on the green and white…
I think what Laxolution is trying to say is that Yorktown isn’t totally dominant in section 1 anymore. Yes they went undefeated in section 1 but look at some of the scores, close games with L/P, Rye, Brewster, JJ, it’s not an “impressive” sweep of the section but it’s still something they can brag about. But other teams are rising up, it’s not just town anymore. They’re not indisputably the best in the section anymore, of course JJ is up there now and other teams are rising up too. Yorktown dominance is gone, maybe they’ll dominate some years such as next year but teams in section 1 will always be with them or even better than them certain years. But what’s not gone is the talent that Yorktown has, but if I were you pfr you shouldn’t be bragging after all of the tough section 1 games this year, and when you say beat JJ AGAIN, it wasn’t until years before when they beat them before, so I’m not sure why you say again.
Right. Also, another point on the aura and mystique with respect to JJ is this: 4 or more years ago, Jay would treat a win over Yorktown as if it were a rare feat to savor… reacting as if it’s a championship win. The last few years, the JJ boys go into these games fully expecting to win and being very disappointed when they don’t because they know they can. I have tremendous respect for Yorktown, most Jay supporters do. I can assure everyone, however, that no JJ player is jealous of the green and white. There is no reason for the “champs” to hate the champs. I don’t think any top teams in the section are jealous of Yorkttown any more. That’s a reflection of the aura and mystique being gone. Town is just another very strong team in the section who a number of in-section opponents have beaten over the past few years.
seems to me that the only one’s who ever bring up aura or mystique are non-yorktown folks be it players, fans parents etc. don’t know what you mean by all of that, sure you talk of respect but is it really, sounds like a put down on their entire program. no mystique about a strong youth program, no mystique about a town supporting its lax program and its kids dreaming of playing on the hs team, no mystique about teaching fundamentals and team play at an early age. JJ and rye are great teams and will be for hopefully many many years to come, only makes the area better. yorktown does have an aura about it, and it shines from the state championship flags, the sectional championship flags and all of the great players that have emerged from the school. even a non yhs grad like myself can understand that simple fact. so to say that the aura or mystique is gone is just a put down. only way you can take the aura from the yorktown program is to declare all of their sucesses null and void. please stop shooting down a program in order to build yours up, seems petty and lame.
You missed the point. Not putting down Yorktown. They will always be respected. Just not feared.
But the same could be said of West Genny, yet with even a good season, the respect was quiet until the end. This year was all about West Islip and of course Gillman. We have to all face it, as the sport grows everyone is looking at new and different schools from new and different places. If teams like yorktown want to stay feared and respected, they need to show that in those out of section challenges.

Laxolution,
Yorktown is not feared?? are you kidding me?? Yorktown will be the most dominant team in section 1 for many years to come…stop trying to put down the champs just to build ur program up….29 sec titles and 6 state championships is an amazing task and I CAN GAURANNTEE YOU that there will never EVER be another sec1 team to every come close to reaching Towns accomplishments…They are a dynasty and will always be because they just reload every year…Like I said, dont be sad and critical towards the champs just bc u couldnt step onto Charlie Murphy Feild…
Gotta hand it to certain Jay fans. They have no fear. They lose to Yorktown this year, will get smacked around by them next year, but they are already looking ahead to 2010 BABY!
Laxolution, I see where you are going with you “mystique and aura” comment, but you need a better analogy my friend.
As bad as these Laxpower rankings are, Inside Lacrosse’s final one was an all-time low for them.
Brother Rice No. 1.
This is why I walk away from the game after the first week in June.
PlayingforRINGS you’re missing the point. We’re not being critical towards Yorktown and we’re not trying to build our program up, you don’t have to go back to history that has nothing to do with it. All I’m saying is that they’re not so dominant any more, and some section 1 teams don’t go into them expecting to lose anymore. Look at the last couple of years, where JJ was better than them, and even this year they had many tough games with section 1 teams. Maybe next year they’ll be dominant but not in 2 or 3 years. To some teams like JJ last year they are not feared.
It’s like Curt Schilling once said regarding the Yankees and the notion of mystique and aura- “They are dancers in a nightclub”. I’m just having fun with playingforRINGs. No disrespect for Yorktown. We should not take our favorite programs too seriously.
The focus is now off the HS teams and instead on Empires and local summer club teams where all the adversaries from the spring can become teammates and friends on the field. Good stuff.
no problem….but my dominant ytown team should be represented by atleast 6 town boys that are gonna be responsible for leading town to an 09 state title (interlicchio, ranagan…)
I have to admit Yorktown will be very good next year, maybe like JJ last year good chance of state title. Any word on if they are in A or B?
any word on empire tryouts. can some list the team
Joe,
Also would like to see the list as the kids were notified last night.
Thanks
Supposedly we have a final 30?? Anybody??
The list should now be released since the calls were made. The rosters are already out for the final 30 from Central and LI. I am guessing not all players could be reached and Joe might have an embargo on his update until everyone gets the call.
The upcoming schedule leading up to the Empire games would also be of interest. The team has a game on Monday against the Iroquois U19 National Team upstate.
HV Emps,
Thanks. Any way to get the rosters for LI and Central.
The ESG coaching staff met last night after its game against Tailgators at Purchase College and has cut the roster to 31 players.
I obtained the list a short time ago and will be posting it shortly. The names still have to be inputted, etc.
A change this year is that alternates have not been designated. That will be done at some point prior to the games.
I read that the roster needs to be submitted by July 5th to ESG, so that is next Saturday I believe. Read that in a Syracuse paper about the Central Team. So the kids have to know by next week whether they are alternates or not.
when will it be up
i really wanna see the roster
I don’t really like rankings myself and I don’t follow them to closely. It seems to me the only thing you can control is your play on the field and your attitude. Let’s face it most of theese rankings are arbitrary at best. I am sure if we took a selection of the people who replied on this blog the majority of us would have a different top 10-15-20 and all for different reasons. In addition let’s face it the school we played for or root for might be in a different section, class, or region so who really cares whaT SOME COMPUTER SPITS OUT. In the end hopefully you got to play in a great program, made it to a few sectional finals and if you are lucky enough like some of us had the opportunity to play in a couple of State championships. So best of luck to the future stars of the Lax world Next year starts today.
these rankings don’t mean anything. The only rankings that matter are the inside lacrosse rankings.
IMO the Laxpower rankings are MUCH more accurate than that BS IL rankings.
alot of ppl have mentioned inside lacrosse ranking Brother Rice as #1 a travesty, which at first i was outraged about b/c they dont play any great teams but remember they have 11 kids going D1 between some seniors and some juniors have committed. And supposedly this number could be higher but they have one of the strongest football teams in america(unlike anyon in this section) and lost kids to football. but i would still say not #1 but def deserve top ten
Agreed, def a top 10 team but not better than Gilman. Carthage Definitely should NOT be in the rankings as well.
