Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Some news from the all-section dinner

June
19

Hey folks. Just returned from the all-section dinner at Colonial Terrace in Cortlandt Manor. In addition to the all-section honorees, the nine (yes, I said nine) Section 1 all-Americans were also honored. Prior to heading up to the dinner I received word that it was discovered today, almost three weeks after the all-America team was selected, that Section 1 gets nine — not eight — spots.

The formula is now one AA for every five schools that offer the sport, not every six, as had been the case. So the latest AA is certainly a deserving one, Syracuse-bound JJ senior Tyler Granelli, who led the section in assists. Granelli accepted his AA award tonight.

Also unveiled tonight was the Academic all-America and Scholar-Athlete team and scholarship winners. Evan Shreck of Suffern received a $1,750 scholarship, Brendan Berkowitz from White Plains a $1,250 scholarship. John Froats (Yorktown) and Luke Zambetti (Scarsdale) each received $750 scholarships.Other Academic AAs were Brendan Kurpis (Yorktown), Jared Lippell (Ardsley), Steve Mathews (Suffern), Scott McElwee (Rye), Kevin McPartland (Brewster) and Kevin Miao (Yorktown).

Now to some other news.

Several players from the LoHud — including Somers’ Joe Marasco, Yorktown’s Michael Bonitatibus and Rye resident Kieran McDonald — have been invited to play at the prestigious Jake Reed Blue Chip Classic at UMBC June 26-28.

And speaking of JoJo Marasco, in case you missed it, North Carolina named Ohio State coach Joe Breschi as its new coach. Marasco, of course, verbally committed to OSU — but he has not yet signed a binding National Letter of Intent. It’s very possible Breschi’s departure could impact Marasco’s decision to attend OSU now. No decisions have been made as yet. But stayed tuned, of course.

I talked to ESG coach Dave McNally tonight and he said he hopes to make the final Hudson Valley cut (including 10 alternates) by this time next week. The team will be playing a Sound Shore League game at SUNY Purchase at 7:15 p.m. next Wednesday which could be, in effect, the final tryout.

Here is the now complete AA list:

Zach Badalucco, Brewster, sr., defense

Chris Bocklet, John Jay, sr., attack

Rocky Bonitatibus, Yorktown, sr., midfield

Jack Doherty, Lakeland/Panas, jr., attack

Kevin Drew, John Jay, sr., midfield

Kevin Gordon, Rye, sr., midfield

Tyler Granelli, John Jay, sr., attack/midfield

Joe Marasco, Somers, jr., attack/midfield

John Ranagan, Yorktown, jr., attack/midfield

Also congrats to Joe … on being named SECTION ONE MAN OF THE YEAR!
Your speech was very interesting and you were funny and informative. You really had everyone's attention. Great turnout for the dinner too.

  3. lets go joe

  4. Joe Lombardi

Thanks, guys. It was definitely a fun night. Dave Marr, Dan Kaiser, Drew Wendol and Mike Honey did a nice job running things.

Also – fyi – another local player has been invited to Jake Reed: J.P. Garry, an attackman from Rye Country Day.

  5. laxin

  6. game day

    congrats to tyler….
i don't really understand how we can mess up the number of all american selected. But atleast now tyler gets the selection, great season by him and it is well deserved.

  7. Syracuse

Well deserved Tyler. Congrats to you and yours …

  8. laxmaster

two things when did ranagan move to attack and how dosen't the section mvp mickey b not make aa another reason why it has become a joke

question to consider…how much did the voting change during the weeks in between the meeting for AA and all-section and when they realized the mistake? Just feel like some votes could've been swayed especially when the JJ TEAM makes it into the state tourney.

  10. LAX

ANSWER: It didn't change at all. They didn't vote, they took the player that had the next most votes when they met before.

I thought mike B should've made it but those 9 up there are all deserving as well, mike B was almost no doubt had the 10th most votes this year but will make it next year. And according to maxpreps Ranagan is M/A, he's mostly middie but probably played some attack doesn't mean he moved to attack.

  11. y and d

    MB?

  12. YAJ

    LAX,
they absolutely did vote again…and the results would have been different had they selected the 9 originally.

  13. LAX

Any comment Joe? I don't think they voted again. Anyway, I thought Tyler was definitely deserving of the 9th spot, I even thought he should've been in the original 8.

  14. Joe Lombardi

The coaches did vote again last week after it was learned there were nine honorees and not eight.
