Today's state championship games

June
14

We’ll be posting updates as we get them, folks.

Class A

West Genesee 11, Syosset 7

The Wildcats (21-3) pulled away for their 15th state title in history.

A goal by Ryan Barber early in the fourth quarter gave West Genesee a 7-6 lead. West Genesee extended the lead to two goals moments later. After Harvard-bound Jeff Cohen, the all-time leading goal scorer in Long Island history, scored midway through the quarter to pull Syosset within 8-7, the Wildcats ended the game by scoring three unanswered goals.

Syosset beat Yorktown 7-6 on Thursday in the semifinals.

Class B

Rocky Point 17, Carthage 6

The Eagles (21-1), making their first state title-game appearance, rolled to the win to end the season with a 19-game win streak.

Rocky Point beat John Jay 11-10 in the semifinals on Thursday.

Class CĀ

Mount Sinai 10, Corning East 5

The Mustangs jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the half in their first appearance in the state finals. Mount Sinai coach Joe Cuozzo, a Yonkers native who has 728 wins, is in his second season with the Mustangs (18-3). He won seven state titles and 15 Long Island championships during his tenure as Ward Melville coach.

Mount Sinai defeated Rye 7-1 in the semifinals on Thursday.

  1. Syracuse

Not to pour salt in any wounds here, but Syosset led West Genny 6-2 at the half before getting steamrolled in the second half. Messere is a tactical genius.

Rocky Point is beating the hell out of Carthage 8-3 in like the 1st quarter ….

  2. Syracuse

Rocky Point 9-3 at half. John Jay fans, I feel your angst

  3. STRONGISLAND

I didn't have any doubt in my mind that WG would win, same with Rocky Point.

  4. hjuy

john jay could have won a state championship. Rocky point beat Carthage 17-6. Yorktown would of lost to west genney they beat syossit 11-7

  5. Slacrosse

Saw something about Syosset being shocked in loss to WG!

I'm not shocked. Thought Nisky team Town beat was better team then Syosset and expected WG to win.

  6. ummm...

    hjuy,
It is hard to say who would have won based on results from games a team did not play in. Anyone who has been following lacrosse, this season in particular, knows that anything can happen and anyone one can win or lose on any given day. It is best for John Jay Y-town and Rye to look back at their seasons and see all that they accomplished instead of what they missed.

  7. joe b

Could this be the end of an era at JJCR. Especially if Yorktown goes down to "B".

  8. hjuy

no john jay will be fine. The youth program is to good and the coaching philosopy is excellent.

Jv and freshman team was great.
Here is next year line up

    attack
    billy pray
    morris
    daniello

    middie
    stewart
    weil
    silver
    walter
    merlino
    cylenica
    farrell
    chen

    defense
    deruiter
    pickel
    stearns

    goalie
    maher

  9. laxin

hjuy do you really think that can beat the yorktown lineup (i will put it all down if you want)

  10. joey mac

yes it can and i heard town was staying in A

  11. LaxFan

    Hjguy

You totally discounted Drew Beck and Andrew Masterson. Two excellent players. Beck was hurt this year but should return next year. Masterson saw time immediately after Murphy this year and both would easily be starters on any other team. As for Pray and Morris, I am sure they are good but there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between JV and Varsity. They will have to work hard to earn their spots over these two proven varsity players.

  12. KDOG

I can't see Town staying in A unless that is where they are supposed to be. If they are a B team by population of school that is where they should be playing in sectionals

  13. Syracuse

They have the right to petition to play A sectionals and states if they want. The question is, will it benefit them? It will be good for the section if they choose to play A, but if they don't L/P and Mahopac will need to step up.

At the end of the day, Town will weigh all the pros and cons. This is a program that expects to play the best possible competition each year. That could very well be in Class B next year. Then again, the idea of Class A states is still the ultimate due to Section 11 and West Genny.

  14. Syracuse

hjuy and Joey Mac – John Jay will be rebuilding next year so you can't just pencil them in as a contender because of name recognition. Yorktown is bringing back a ton of offense, their entire defense and the best goalie in the section. Be careful what you wish for.

I do agree, however, the Jay's rebuilding period will be very short. In about two years they'll be very good again, while the jury is still out on what Town has cookin' down on the farm.

  15. james

what do people think of rye's chances next year

  16. laxguy11

Next year will be a rebuilding year for JJ, and Town will be much better. But in two years is when JJ comes back to being one of, if not the top team in Section 1. That list Hjuy put together was not right at all, there was is no way of telling who will step up until the season starts.

  17. Heyimjohn

Never to early to make some predictions for next season..wh do people has as thier favorites to win by class?

  18. Yes

This is a more realistic line up. And do NOT under-estimate Masterson, kid could have an assist field-day if given the right players. Stewart will break grounds with 98 G's. Silver hardest worker on the field i've ever seen. Will without a doubt lead that defense.

    Attack
    Masterson
    Beck
    Daniello
    (Pray)

    Middie
    Stewart
    O'Donnell(my sleeper pick)
    Chen
    Merlino(Face-off's)
    Walter
    Cylenica
    Rofofsky
    Weil

    D-Middies
    Silver(Face-off's)
    Farrel
    Murray

    LSM
    Deruiter
    (Waldman)

    Defense
    Pickel
    Stearns
    Dunworth(Second Sleeper)
    (Lanza)

    Goalie
This is gonna be a dog fight
ill call the goalie Fletcher "Wallace" Maher

  19. Curious

When and where is the exceptional senior game?

  20. Curious

Any word on the exceptional senior game? When and where?

  21. Joe Lombardi

    Monday at 7 at Yorktown.

  22. laxxing

Joe- Whats the edal with the senior game????????

  23. laxxing

Joe were you at empires- how did the new kids from JJ RYE AND TOWN look

  24. Jolly Green Giant

According to the info that I found on the State webpage, Yorktown is staying in Class A next year. The cut-off numbers for boys and girls lacrosse are different. So even though the Yorktown girls will play in B, the boys will play in A because of how the numbers work.

  25. LAX

Maher (sophomore) will be the starting goalie for JJ next year. I think Daniello should move to attack next year along with Masterson and Beck, or another freshman JV starter this year (Morris, Pray, Lupinacci). Stewart will be our top goal scorer at middie along with Silver (excellent d middie), Cylenica, Rofofsky, O'donnell, Merlino, Walter, Weil, Merlino, Farrell, De Ruiter at LSM. At defense there will be Pickel (assuming he stays at defense), Stearns, Genovesi (sophomore who was injured this year). Expect the current freshman to make an impact next year for JJ. With the sheer amount of talent JJ lost over the last 2 years next year will be a rebuilding year, though they'll still be one of the best in the section. JJ should hope that Yorktown won't move down next year. Here's my starting lineup for JJ next year:

    Attack:
    Masterson
    Daniello (if he plays attack)
    Beck

B Morris, Pray, Lupinacci (all freshman) have realistic chances of starting or becoming good contributers, they were great on JV this year.

    Midfield:
    Stewart
    Silver
    Cylenica
LSM – De Ruiter (also Waldman)

Rofofsky is good as well. O'donnell, Merlino are good sophomores, freshman (sophomores next year) should have some contributers with Walter, Weil, J Morris, Chen, J Stewart.

    Defense:
    Stearns
    Genovesi
    Pickel

Also: Dunworth, Smyth (current sophomore), Lanza, Caviola, Winter (current freshman).

    Goalie:
    Maher

    Also – Franklin, Duffy

  26. P & G

    Laxfan, Yes, and Hjuy—
Discussing JJ's next year team is fine – but the inclusion of some, and the exclusion of others – shows to me, you don't know where the real battles lie, or you are only promoting friends, etc.

"LAX" has the most honest & relevant "depth chart".

At attack there are 6 kids that should be in the mix (2 seniors – Beck & Masterson, and 4 sophs – Daniello, Lupinacci, B Morris & Pray).

At Middie – Stewart (Sr.) will be the team leader, and the rest needs to shake out. Silver (Sr.) will certainly be on the field in some capacity. Juniors to watch are Merlino & O'Donnell. There are 5 Sophs to watch closely (Chen, J Morris, J Stewart, Walter and Weil). Walter is a beast on f/o's.

Defense will be led by Stearns (Sr.), and Pickel (Jr.). Two Jr's will compete (Smith & Waldman), and there are 4 more sophs (Caviola, Lanza, Mertens, Winter). Don't forget the Sav's might look to convert yet another offensive player to defense as well. There is plenty of athleticism and lax skill on the offensive end to do this.

I'm in the minority – but I think there will be a goalie battle between Franklin & Maher.

While the lacrosse "hot stove" talk will entertain us for months to come, I think the real issue that the Savs will sort out next year is how many of the talented rising sophs end up contributing. Next year may be a "down" year by JJ standards – but I expect them to challenge YTown in '10 and demolish all comers in '11.

  27. PC

P&G,curious as to why you left dunworth off your list of competitors for next years JJ defense in favor of rising juniors and sophs? He was one of first subs in, seemed to hit hard and come up with a bunch of ground balls.

  28. LAX

Dunworth is good, but I think Genovesi would get a starting spot over him. He was injured this year but hopefully he'll come back strong next year as a junior.

  29. Old Timer

When was the last time Sav brought a soph attackman up to varsity and not have him start as a junior? Especially one that is 6 ft plus, 200 lbs plus, fast and quick, with good vision …and judging from the video on the Jay site, likes to hit?

    Why no love for O'Donnell?

  30. ymer

    speed, skill, work ethic, attitude?

  31. laxguy11

Knowing O'donell, he is a great kid, good work ethic, good stick skills. I'm sure he is getting many looks (he's playin middie as of now). Just because people aren't mentioning him on this blog doesn't mean the Sav's don't see his potential. They are the ones that count, not a bunch of dads picking the next years team, which is almost impossible!

  32. JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ

Was Merlino on varsity this year for JJ? I've seen his name a few times on here but I don't know much about him and never seen him play I know he's a transfer though.

  33. Laxolution

Merlino was not on varsity. But he can is a very strong kid who can play. He will get some minutes next season and will be one of several good face-off options for JJ (Silver, Walter, Weil the others). JJ will be glad to have him.

  34. Laxolution

BTW- he transferred from Arlington almost mi-way into the season and was injured for the last several JV games. I would bet he will come into the fall healthy and strong and determined to make his mark. IMO the timing of the transfer precluded his consideration for varsity this spring.
