Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Class C state semifinal: Rye vs. Mount Sinai

June
12

Brutal day thus far for Section 1. It’s up to Rye now.
Warmup clock reads 39:15 so this game should start a few minutes after 8:30.

(By the way, I’m sorry of the formatting is a bit funny on your computer…not sure why that is…but come on, lacrosse players are tough, so the readers should be too.)

Update 1: Game is underway. Rye has already survived a shot off the post.

Update 2: Still scoreless. Just as I think many of us expected. 6:40 left in the first.

Update 3: Mt. Sinai 1, Rye 0. 5:47 left in quarter. Michael Chapman scored.

Update 4: Mt. Sinai 2, Rye 0, End of first. James Dawson scored with five seconds left in the first quarter.

Update 5: Same score. Mt. Sinai 2, Rye 0. There is just not a lot of action.

Update 6: Mount Sinai 3, Rye 0, 5:24 left in half. Jonathan Hoeg scored off his own rebounds on a transition goal. Looking like Section 1’s tough day is continuing.

Update 7: Mount Sinai 4, Rye 0, 3:20 left in half. Michael Chapman scored again.

Update 8: Mount Sinai 5, Rye 0, 2:26 left in half. James O’Brien scored.

Update 9: Same score. Mt. Sinai 5, Rye 0. 1:21 left in half.

Update 10: Mt. Sinai 5, Rye 0. Halftime.

Update 11: James O’Brien scores the first goal of the second half. It comes midway through the third and give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead.

Update 12: Kevin Gordon’s unassisted goal gets the Garnets on the board. It’s 6-1 with 5:37 left in the third.

Update 13: Mount Sinai leads 6-1 after three.

Update 14: Mount Sinai is putting the finishing touches on this one. James Langton scores with 3:10 remaining to make it 7-1.

Update 15: That’s it. Mount Sinai wins 7-1.

Section 1 goes 0-3 in the semis.

Mount Sinai will play Corning East in the Class C championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Hofstra.

Well, so much for that Section 1 sweep of the Island! Must be truly disappointing for some on here who made so many smug remarks after other recent games. And too much complaining about the refs in the Class A game – just take it – don't whine. Section 1 was just not up to the level of the "Island" – again!

  31. Syracuse

SectIXLax – I think you'll be dead and buried by the time Section IX is up to the level of Section I, let alone the Island, so stop your crying about a few people who stated the obvious about the games last Saturday. Nobody was saying Section IX teams didn't play hard. Nobody called out specific players or coaches. The truth is you got buried and now pass yourself off as thinking the Island beating us somehow gives you revenge or closure. Go back to the hole you live in and don't return until you're ready to give us a game. The last thing anyone here needs is to have a clown from a region that could be our Triple-A affiliate giving us grief about tough losses to teams that would beat an All-Star team from Section IX by 25 goals.

  32. Rye

Sinai had a good game plan for the Garnets. Locking Gordon the majority of the game limited offensive flow and when Sam Fulmer went down early in the 1st with a shoulder injury there was definately a hole in the Rye offense. With out Sam and with Gordon getting limited touches the midfield dodging was ineffective. Rye's attack was up against a great set of poles but did well and if they got a couple bounces and if the Sinai goalie wasnt playing very well I'm sure they would have tallied a few. Rye's D as always was strong and senior goalie Matt Rix was outstanding as usual. Great season Garnets and continue the legacy for years to come!!!

  33. Yes

Whats the disappointment from Section 1. Besides Rye, Section gave every team all they got and made amazing games outta both. Even Rye looks like it was pushin Sinai's limits for at least a little bit. In my eyes Section 1 wasn't a disappointment at all we went out respectfully.

  34. SectIXLax

So what was all the whining about the refs for then? Saying a game was taken away (by a Section 1 official) makes it sound as if the island teams were not as good. They were better and made more plays – period! And my congrats to the Rye folks – haven't heard any crying and not cheap shot posts either.

  35. rye ma

Actually, from where I sat, Yorktown DOMINATED 75% of the game, but all that counts in the final score….a couple of momentum changing calls could possibly have had some bearing on the outcome, but you couldn't pay me enough money to be out there in stripes, making instantaeous judgement calls! All three Section 1 teams played their hearts out, and should leave the Island proud of their respective seasons. Job well done, boys!

sect1Xlax – we look forward to the years ahead when your programs improve (as I'm sure they will), and can better prepare the section 1 teams for the semi's….and maybe even – years & years down the line – make a run for the Island yourselves….I'm sure you can appreciate that having to sit all starters for 36 minutes of quarter final games so as to not run the score up, isn't an ideal way to get ready for the semi's. Good luck to all of you too.

  36. Yo yo ma

    hay chappy. Pretty crappy

  37. SectIXLax

Quarter finals were against South Glens Falls (Sect. 2). And would they all have sat that long if the semi game was not the next day and the heat/humid a factor? And if I recall the scoring run-down from the blog here Bocklet, Drew, Laperch, Jones and Granelli all scored in the 2nd half vs. Sect. 9. – a game that was 10-2 at the half!

  38. OldTimer

    SectIXLax

Are you seriously trying to claim that Saugerties gave Jay a game (which was 18-3 after 3) because they were "only" behind 10-2 at the half and because Jay didn't pull their starters (in a State quarterfinal game against a team with an 18-1 record) until the third quarter?

There has been no hating going on here. It is not disrespectful to point out that Section IX Lax is noncompetitive with Section I Lax. It is simply an objective statement.

There are more teams (23) in Section One with higher LaxPower Ratings that the top rated team in Section Nine than there are teams in Section 9 (17). More than half of the teams in Section Nine (11) are rated below the last and 45th ranked team in Section One.
There is a first year section one class C program (North Salem) that is ranked ahead of all of Section Nine except for Valley Central.

    Noncompetitive, period.

Saugerties was the lowest rated team Jay had played all year – (though the Section 2 team they played had an even lower power rating)

In contrast, Section 2 has at least 2 clubs that can play with the top of Section1. – Nisky's power ranking only trails Jay and Town – and they beat Jay and gave Town a game – Guilderland beat Panas.

Jay never took offense that LI teams used to pummel them and took them for granted – they just got better.

No one hates Section Nine Lax here. Nobody Cares.

If reality is so offensive to you, don't complain when someone else observes or remarks on that reality – change the reality. Get better.

  39. SectIXLax

Just looked at Laxpower again. Since you mentioned Saugerties I checked their schedule – low and behold they beat Nanuet at Nanuet – a team with a higher power ranking. Interesting if Laxpower ratings are the end-all.

Whatever – These blogs and all the hot air, etc… self included. My point is that some points can be made without digging other teams or sections and without crying about poor officiating, etc…

Section 1 teams are better than 9 (in most cases, exception noted above) and Long Island Teams were better yesterday than the the teams from 1.

Anyone going down to see the games tomorrow – even though our teams are not in – but just to see some great lax at a great site on a great day? I am.

  40. Old Timer

    SectionIXLax

    ???

Saugerties (ranked third in section 9) beat Nanuet (ranked 19th by laxpower in Section 1) 6-4 earlier in the season. This is relevant how? Nanuet was bounced in the first round of the Class C sectionals 13-5. There aren't even 19 teams IN Section nine.

Line up #1 v #1, #2 v #2, etc. and Section 9 would be lucky to not lose every game by 10 goals. Hell, line up Section 9 against the bottom 17 teams in section 1 and section one still would win the majority.

But the thing is when talking about Section 1 v Section 9 or Section 2 or Long Island, the talk is about the States and the best of the best. So Section 1 is talking about Rye, Jay and Town. Section 9 just doesn't enter the conversation. With the exception of Nisky, Section 2 doesn't enter the conversation. ...and in some years, as far as LI is concerned, Section 1 doesn't enter the conversation. This isn't one of those years.

Jeff Gold is from Long Island. The past LI/Section 1 state games he was discussing in the post you so object to, he was covering for Newsday. His audience for the post was from Section one. He was using section one's playoff dominance over Section 9 as a point of reference for his audience.

    "
“Beatdown Thursday,” what the state semifinals could have easily been called a couple years ago, seems like a thing of the past. Today is the day of the state boys lacrosse semifinals. And all the games should be fascinating….

Two years ago, when I worked at Newsday, I drove up from Lancaster, Pa. to West Point and covered the state semifinals. Let’s just say, I didn’t exactly see great games. ...

So you get the point. It was ugly. They weren’t lacrosse games. They were assaults. They were one step removed from Section 1 against Section 9….

...Two years is a long time.

...No longer did a “great” Westchester team only have a chance against a “subpar” Long Island team. Rather, Westchester’s best beat Long Island’s (and the country’s) best."

It is not a dig at Section 9. If you can't see that, the problem isn't with us here. If you insist upon being upset and taking offense when none is intended or given, by something written for an audience other than you, read some other blog.

This was old news on Long Island 2 months ago.

Good luck to Rye next year
