Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Class B state semifinal: John Jay vs. Rocky Point

June
12

The game, originally scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start, now won’t get under way till 6 p.m.

We’ll be back with updates.

First quarter

UPDATE 1: Rocky Point’s Dan Kramer scores 34 seconds into the game. The Eagles take a 1-0 lead.

In the other Class B semi, Section 6’s Hamburg leads Carthage 7-1 after one.

UPDATE 2: Kevin Drew scores off a low blast from 20 yards out. It’s tied at 1-1 with 9:57 left in the first.

UPDATE 3: Kramer connects again with 8:22 left in the quarter. Rocky Point has controlled play, winning all three faceoffs. The Eagles have hit the post twice. It’s 2-1 RP.

UPDATE 4: John Jay wins its first faceoff and Billy LaPerch scores off a feed from Tyler Granelli. It’s tied 2-2. I get the feeling we could have a high-scoring game.

UPDATE 5: An apparent goal by Chris Bocklet is waved off because of interference.

UPDATE 6: Drew sprints in and scores on another low shot. John Jay leads 3-2 with 5:30 left.

UPDATE 7: Matt Palasek ties it at 3-3.

UPDATE 8: Harrison Jones scored off a Tyler Granelli feed. It’s 4-3 JJ.

UPDATE 9: Matt Palasek scores again. It’s tied 4-4.

UPDATE 10: Rocky Point takes a timeout with 1:41 left in the period.

UPDATE 11: We’ve completed one quarter. It’s tied 4-4.

Second quarter

UPDATE 12: Harrison Jones puts one through the legs of RP goalie Bill McGee off a feed from Kevin Drew to start the period. JJ takes a 5-4 lead.

UPDATE 13: Rob Collins answers for RP. It’s tied 5-5.

UPDATE 14: Will Stewart scores off a spectacular feed from Chris Bocklet. JJ takes a 6-5 lead with 8:56 left in the second period.

UPDATE 15: Collins scores off a feed from Tom Palasek to tie it at 6-6.

UPDATE 16: Kramer’s third goal gives RP a 7-6 lead with 4:37 left in the second period.

UPDATE 17: We’re at halftime. RP leads 7-6. I’ll be back with some stats shortly.

Hamburg leads Carthage 14-12 late in the third period.

Halftime stats

Shots — Rocky Point 23, John Jay 19

Turnovers — Each team has 11

Faceoffs — RP has won 9 of 15

Penalties — RP 1/1:00; JJ 1/:30

Saves — John Jay (Chris Latino) 9; RP (Bill McGee) 6

Third quarter

UPDATE 18: Lucas Durst scores off a feed from Granelli. It’s tied at 7-7.

UPDATE 19: Billy LaPerch scores off a feed from Bocklet to give John Jay an 8-7 lead with 5:13 left in the third quarter. Bocklet needs two assists to tie Marty Kelly’s record for career assists of 134.

UPDATE 20: Kevin Drew scores unassisted, marking the second year in a row he’s had three goals in the state semis. JJ leads 9-7 with 3:55 left in the third quarter.

Hamburg leads Carthage 16-15 with three minutes left in regulation in the other state semi.

UPDATE 21: We’ve completed three. JJ leads 9-7. Can the Indians make the state final for the second straight year?

Fourth quarter

UPDATE 22: Dan Kramer scores his fourth goal to pull RP within 9-8. Buckle up, gang. Should be a wild quarter.

Carthage scores two late goals to pull out a 17-16 win in the other state semi. The winner of JJ-RP plays Carthage in the final on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Hofstra.

UPDATE 23: An unassisted goal by sophomore Peter Vivonetto ties it at 9-9 with 8:30 left in regulation.

UPDATE 23: Kramer’s fifth goal of the game — off a rebound — gives RP a 10-9 lead with 7:10 left in the fourth quarter.

UPDATE 24: Rob Collins’ third goal of the game — and RP’s fourth straight — gives the Eag;es an 11-9 lead with 6:26 to go.

UPDATE 25: Bocklet scores from Drew to pull JJ within 11-10 with 5:06 left.

UPDATE 26: John Jay will have a man-up opportunity for the next minute.

UPDATE 27: John Jay is unable to score.

UPDATE 28: McGee stuffs Bocklet from in close. RP still leads 11-10 – there’s 1:45 to go.

UPDATE 29: John Jay is called for two holding penalties with 1:15 to go. RP has a two man-up opportunity but may opt not to shoot to protect the lead.

UPDATE 30: Rocky Point does not score on the opportunity but maintains possession and calls timeout with 30 seconds left.

UPDATE 31: John Jay gets possession and Billy LaPerch shoots just wide of the net as time expires.

FINAL: Rocky Point 11, John Jay 10

    FINAL

7:16 p.m. Carthage has the ball in its own end with 28 seconds left. Hamburg managed to keep possession until a 10-man ride—when the goalie comes out to mark a player—got the ball loose from a stumbling Hamburg player, and Carthage called timeout.

    7:18 p.m. We're tied at 16-16 with 15.6 seconds left

7:21 p.m. We have a FINAL SCORE: Carthage 17, Hamburg 16 in an unbelievable finish.

  60. SectIXLax

What!!! A LI sweep of Section 1. I guess Section 1 is just not up to the level of Sections 8 and 11. Maybe next year?

  61. Donaghy?

best team today was town. when is li coming 2 play in our house? total BS today, msg must need the ratings

  62. LacrosseInsider

How did Section IX do against the long island teams yesterday?

  63. GOALIE DAD

Cant enjoy a great game. Total class game by both teams.1 had to win 1 had to loose. GOOD LUCK TO BOTH

  64. sec1

Sec 9 stop talking you sound like a fool, most of the better J V teams in Sec 1 would beat your best.. If the Sec 1 teams that your Sec 9 just played left in there first 2 lines all game you would have lost by 30 or more GOAL"S… The reason you are getting a responce like this is because you have only neg things to say.. We in Sec 1 who are true Lacrosse fan want your Sec 9 to get much better for all of us and the game!!!

  65. SectIXLax

Just wondering – How many of you true lacrosse fans made the trip to Hofstra today for the games? I did!
