Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

One step away

June
10

Will Section 1 make it 3 for 3 in the state semifinals for the third straight year?

There’s a good chance.

Yorktown (Class A), John Jay (Class B) and Rye (Class C) have state quarterfinal-round games today starting at 3:30 p.m. at Yorktown High School when the ‘Huskers face Niskayuna in what should be the most competitive and intriguing game of the day.

As we all know, there’s plenty of history between Yorktown and Niskayuna — most recently last season, when the ‘Huskers pulled out a one-goal win in the state quarterfinals.

And Niskayuna has made its mark vs. Section 1 since then, beating John Jay 9-5 during the regular season. Meanwhile, the Long Island championship games are also being played today.

Highlighting the slate at Hofstra is the Class B showdown between Rocky Point and Garden City. While many have been enamored by Rocky Point’s prolific offense this season (in fact more than one person has told me RP is the best team on Long Island), I am projecting Garden City to win — let’s say 8-5.

The Trojans’ D will be too much.

That is not good news for John Jay, which has shown time and again it can game plan as well as anyone to contain prolific offenses. Matching up against tough defenses — such as Niskayuna — have been a different story for the Indians.

  1. Syracuse

OK, the time has come for predictions, the definitive final words on Tuesday's doings.

    *Yorktown-Niskayuna:

I am very much in the minority on this board when it comes to my feelings on this game. While many agree that Yorktown will win, I don't think many are confident it will be a decisive win.

    I am.

This has nothing to do with green-colored glasses or any of that nonsense. I like Yorktown comfortably because there are no questions left about this team. They have followed the work-in-progress mantra all season and have peaked at precisely the right time.

This is the best offensive Town club in years. They have basically an AA-caliber goalie and a close D that has come together brilliantly.

I know all about Nisky and what they will try to do. I've had little choice but to hear about it non-stop for about two weeks. They will do nothing Tuesday that will shock me. I think Yorktown's excellence of execution and coaching will eventually wear down a young Nisky squad that will be a force for the next two seasons.

John Ranagan and Mike B have this game on their sticks. They do what they normally do, Town is heading to Hofstra with a bullet.

    Yorktown 10, Nisky 4

    *John Jay-South Glens Falls:

There's not much to say other than the fact that Jay is vastly superior to anyone Section 2 has to offer. I still think they'd beat Nisky in a rematch.

The law firm of Bocklet, Granelli & Drew will go to town.

John Jay 15, South Glens Falls 2

    *Rye-Johnstown:

More of the same as in Class B game. Rye will fine-tune some things for Hofstra. Gordon and Co. may not win 20-0, but they'll win comfortably, mostly because it's not in their nature to blow teams out.

    Rye 12, Johnstown 2

I will now crawl back under the rock that housed me so beautifully during the week of Jay-Town.

Seriously folks, good luck to all three teams. For Jay and Rye, focus on the here and now and worry about Hofstra after the final whistle. For Town, just do what you do, send a message to West Islip or Syosset. That message is this, plain and simple:

The Melville game was years ago. You live in the here and now and your mission, which I know you'll accept, is to crack skulls.

  2. rye ma

    Syracuse

Looking forward to you crawling out from under your rock around 10:30 tonight with your head held high!

Key word today: " H Y D R A T E " .... The effects of heat exhaustion last a very long time & Section 1 needs 120 healthy people on the sidelines at Hofstra on Thursday.

Good Luck to all the boys today!

  3. Slacrosse

Town D is gonna be real solid and Mike B is gonna be great.

9-3 Town (credit to Nisky's D in holding Town's scoring to non blow-out level).

  4. Slacrosse

Town beats Nisky 10-3 based upon their solid D with a great job by Mikey B. Giving Nisky credit on D for holding down Town's vaunted O

  5. Slacrosse

Hear Rye schools cancelled due to heat

  6. not nicky b dad

I hear all games are canceled today due to heat, will play tomorrow

  7. hud lax

any word after first day of empire tryouts?

  8. Slacrosse

can someone please confirm that games have been CANCELLED today and will be played tomorrow?—thanks

  9. Observer

Yorktown's school website says games postponed to tomorrow. Rye game to be played at Lakeland HS at 3:30, Yorktown vs Nisky 3:30 at YHS, followed by JJCR game at 5:30.

  10. The Voice

They are. Rye – Johnstown is now 3.30pm at Lakeland HS.

  11. steve14

Games for Thursday stay the same, right?

  12. Slacrosse

Thanks all above for info and confirm

  13. The Voice

    For now, yes.

    Re:Syracuse

I completely agree with you on Ytown—their oplaying as of late & the anticipated game, tomorrow.

I am extremely impressed with their D—the crew has congealed in an impressive fashion. The O was always there.

Joe, a friend of mine in Rye (yes, Rye)
told me you did a feature on Ytowns' starter d middie, Cody Hanlon last year—-he battled cancer for 3 1/2 years? Amazing…..Can you please post that link. I am even more impressed by this boy & team.
Good luck to all our HV teams

  15. Joe Lombardi

lax from above – Cody's story is definitely an inspirational one. Here's the link from a post here on the blog when the article came out. Unfortunately, the story link expired. You can access it in the LoHud story archive though. You can also watch a video report on Cody from that link that is still active.

  16. purple lax

All of the teams & coaches from our area should read about what Hanlon from 'Town has been through & I bet it would give them all a more important reason for winning or simply, just playing the game you love.
It certainly makes you see THE big picture
Great article & video, Joe. Hanlon is an All American in his own right. Kuddos to him & his humble demeanor.
My support is behind green 100%.
This is what makes an athlete & team special & I assume, win, for the right reasons.

  17. Slacrosse

    "lax from above"

Hey us Rye people are not so bad!! Thanks for admitting you actually have a friend from Rye (ha ha)!

  18. lil Joe

Joe- Where can I find the stats for the Long Island taems it looks like our teams will be playing (cold srping, rocky, GC etc)

  19. Joe Lombardi

lil Joe – Newsday has team-by-team results. Not sure if it has team cume stats though.
    Anyway, check this link.

  20. Syracuse

Class A upstate bracket scores 6/10:

    West Genny 13, Vestal 9
    Canandaigua 11, Orchard Park 5

Genny was losing for a good part of this game, led 6-5 at the half and 9-8 after three. I've heard a lot of chatter this season that Vestal was really good, so I'm not sure if we should read into this score at all.

Canandaigua went up 5-0 early and cruised from there.

  21. Re-Lax

Cuse good stuff, I wrote almost the same thing a few days ago. The only way I can see the Yorktown game being close after halftime is if Nisky jumps on the early, or Yorktown is caught looking ahead. However I do not see that happening the team has matured nicely throughout the yrar and is on a great roll.

    Yorktown 14 Nisky 5

I think John Jay might win by even more than Yorktown. There is no doubt Jay did not have the season they expected. They have more than a few talented players on their team and if they get ahead early expect them to keep rolling to the final whistle.

John Jay 18 Souh Glens Falls 4

In the Rye-Johnstown game I don't even see it being close past the first 5 to 10 minutes. Johnstown is just to overmatched, They will not pitch a shutpout but win easily

    Rye 17 Johnstown 3

In anycase best of luck to all teams and let's hope no one suffers an injury.

  22. Syracuse

    Re-lax,

Have you seen Nisky this season? I'm just wondering.

  23. Syracuse

Hamburg into B semifinals, 13-9 over Geneva.

  24. homta

any word on the class C bracket?

  25. Syracuse

Corning East vs. Penn Yan in upstate C semis. I'm liking Rye's chances more and more every day.

Here are scores of games that were actually played on Tuesday:

    Corning East 10, Skaneateles 9
    Hamburg 13, Geneva 9
    West Genny 13, Vestal 9
    Canandaigua 11, Orchard Park 5
    Penn Yan 18, Salamanca 2

    Schedule:

    Class A semis:
    Yorktown/Niskayuna vs. West Islip/Syosset
Canandaigua vs. West Genny (an absolute war is on the horizon in that one)

    Class B semis:
    Hamburg vs. Carthage/Chenango Forks
John Jay/South Glens Falls vs. Garden City/Rocky Point

    Class C semis:
    Corning East vs. Penn Yan
Rye/Johnstown vs. Mt. Sinai/Cold Spring Harbor

  26. NYLax10

I think that the postponed game really helps Jay and Rye, maybe not so much for Town. Jay and Rye should blow out Glen Falls and Johnstown. They'll jump on them early then play their reserves for the rest of their games. Meanwhile, The Long Island Champions are going to have to play a hard fought game today and then turn around and play another one tomorrow. Jay and Rye will be fresh.

I say it probably won't help out Town because I think that the Town-Nisky game will be an actual game. I think that Town will win, but they'll have to play their starters the entire game.

  27. LAX

NYLax that's what I was thinking. It may not be so bad after all that the game got postponed JJ and Rye should play their reserves most of the game if I were them.

  28. OldTimer

    ^

was thinking along the same lines

  29. Re-Lax

    Cuse,
I have not seen them. However We have family in that area who have seen a lot of them. They were at Shaker game. They said Shaker was up for most of game but just could not hold on. NYLAX10, agree with you. But if all goes as planed there will some interesting games on Thursday.
Anyone what time the games are scheduled to start on Thursday.

  30. Slacrosse

    11:30 A 5:30 B 8:30 C

  31. Slacrosse

    Sorry-Thsat's 3:30 A 5:30 B and 8 for C
