Video report: A look at Tuesday's state quarterfinals — and beyond

June
8

We should be in store for an interesting week, folks.

And I think it could wind up being a memorable one for Section 1 lax.

Here’s my take. Hope you enjoy and be sure to let me know what you think.

Could not agree more Joe. There should be some great games and match-ups. Yorktown game might be interesting if they get caught looking ahead. But they are on a great roll and staying focused will be the key. John Jay, and Rye should cruise Tuesday. Thursdays games will be great match-ups and fun to see.Good luck to all

    Joe

    Excellent commentary as usual.

From my crystal ball, here's my State Finals:

    A Genny vs Nisky
    B Hamburg vs Jay
    C Corning E vs Rye

  3. Syracuse

VAS – Those are some BOLD predictions.

So you think Nisky is beating both Yorktown and West Islip (assuming they beat Syosset) and Hamburg, which has the same record every year but always gets bounced in the state tournament early, will beat the Section 3 rep, likely Carthage. That is extremely bold. Don't see either scenario, but you have been right about most John Jay-related picks this year. I just wonder if you overrate Nisky a bit because they beat John Jay. I, myself, think John Jay wins a rematch.

Your Class C prediction seems to me the most likely of the three, though Rye has its hands full on Long Island and Corning East is nothing special. If they play Skaneateles, that could be real interesting.

Just getting back to Hamburg, I know the town and the program. For them to get to where you think they are going they will make history, considering no Section 6 team in Class B or C has ever gotten to the state finals.

    My heart says:

    A—West Genny vs. Yorktown
    B—John Jay vs. Carthage
    C—Rye vs. Skaneateles

    My head says:

    A—West Genny vs. West Islip
B—Garden City vs. Carthage (though I think Rocky Point is a real fascinating possibility)
C—Cold Spring Harbor vs. Corning East

I guess we'll see but I give you credit for trying to take the parity of today's game and stretching it to the very end of the state tournament. I still don't think Section 6 is ready to make a run.

I'd say Canandaigua of Section 5 has a better chance of getting by West Genny than Hamburg has of getting to the state finals. Then again, that's also a somewhat bold prediction.

  4. Joe Lombardi

Yorktown-Nisky should come down to this. Faceoffs. (No surprise there.) But in this game it's especially crucial. Why? Because if Yorktown wins the majority of them and can trigger its fastbreak offense, Nisky won't have a chance to set up its zone defense. And yes, as a poster pointed out, Yorktown is not as potent vs. zones and even when it runs a set offense. It thrives in transition. We saw that most recently against Lakeland/Panas. The reason the game was so one-sided was because the 'Huskers, led by John Ranagan, won 13 of 16 faceoffs in the first half.

If Yorktown gets its transition game going vs. Nisky, I see it winning an 11-6, 12-6 type game.

If not, and Nisky can win the faceoff battle and maintain possession, it could be a real tight game. Still, even if that's the case, I think Yorktown could pull out a win similar to its Rye game this season — though a bit higher scoring than that 6-3 final.

    My pick is 10-6 Yorktown.

  5. Re-Lax

Would love to see Yorktown in state final vs Genny. Yorktown has some pretty impresive wins under their belts Chimanade, St Anthonys, John Jay. Win vs Wilton was nice. Like Cuse my heart says Huskers Genny, however slow start vs West Islip could make for a long day.
In class B I like Jay vs Carthage
In Class C I like Cold Spring Harbor vs Corning East.
But buckle up everyone it should be a great ride.

  6. STRONGISLAND

I think Garden City or Rocky Point will get to the state championship. In A i'm still no sure on who wins the semis, but whoever wins the semis wins the championship if it is town or islip, don't see nisky there. For c i pick coldspring harbor vs corning east.

  7. LAX

I want to see who wins the Island before I make predictions, but I think at least 1 section 1 team will make it to the state finals.

  8. Goo

Like Syracuse, my heart says one thing but my mind another. I see it playing out like this (and I really hope I'm wrong):

A: West Genny beating West Islip
B: Garden City beating Carthage (or if RP gets off the Island, I think they would win B)
C: Mt. Sinai beating Corning East

  9. Syracuse
