As I write this today, there are 12 teams left standing in Section 1 boys lax — four in each of the three classes.

Later today, that number will be cut in half and we will have our matchups for Thursday’s sectional championships at John Jay.

As we get set for today’s big games, be sure to check out our segment previewing the semifinals that aired last night on RNN-TV’s “Varsity Central Extra.” It’s just under three minutes long, but we touched on a lot in that time. Just click here to check it out.

In case you missed my semifinal picks — it’s not too late, you can catch them here — here’s a quick rundown:

Class A:

Lakeland/Panas 12, Horace Greeley 7

    Lax08 – First off, yes, Pleasantville does have a chance. Rye's forte is its defense, which means scores of its games often are comparatively low. When there's less scoring, there's more of an opportunity for an upset.
    To pull it off, Pleasantville will have to get continued strong play from goaltender Conor Fraylick, who has had a strong season. It will need to win the majority of faceoffs and run a patient offense when it has the ball. It will need to limit turnovers and penalties. It will be need to hustle and get to ground balls.
    In short, it would take close to a perfect game. Can it happen? Yes. It is likely to? No.
    But who knows?

    Firstly hats off to Pville for playing a tough game all the way. Thomas made a spectacular behind the back goal.

    Congrats to all the Pville seniors. Obviously was a tough time for them post game. As a Rye fan I did find Gautieri and told him what a great 4 yrs he had and how well respected he was by Rye (as are the other Pville seniors and team). Gettysburg is getting a good one! Good luck to them and to Pville next season.

    Rye had a very strong effort. In particular the Garnets were able to finally uncrank and see alot of goals result from their offensive efforts against a good team right from the start. They needed this kind of offensive break-thru.

    Dan marchesani the long pole for Rye had a spectacular goal after picking up the ball and tricking the defenders by pretending he didnt have it in his stick…the goalie was out of the net and Dan netted his first varsity goal! He is a extremely glorious man.

    It's a shame John Jay didn't display a little more class in their win today. They were up 15-3 at the half and continued to keep their starters in to run the score up a little further and rack up their stats. A 12 point margin isn't enough of a cushion to allow some of the twenty some odd players standing on the sideline a chance to play? Yes, they are a very talented team, but the lack of class is a real disappointment.

    i dont think its right thaat you say something about not putting second stringers in right away. this is the playoffs; chances are they were practicing some things for the finals. john jay knows what they're doing, and i'm a rival player saying that. they're out to prove something after their two section 1 losses to rye and y'town, and i will never question their class at this point in the season.

    All starter were out in the 3rd quarter with 7 min left. Look who scored in second half no name kids. Farrel, masterson, Murphy. That was the most the back ups played all season.

    Funny I saw the first string man up starters in the 4th quarter with 20 points already on the board. Do you need the stats that bad? Hen Hud had 10 times more class against Fox Lane where the held the ball for the entire 4th quarter. Shame on you John Jay.

    Great game played by both sides…4-3 Byram at half, then it was 4-4, Byram pulled away to 7-4 but then the Tigers made it 7-5…Byram just buried them after that, scoring 3 in a row, putting it out of reach, and earning their first trip to the sectional finals in a LONG time

    Looking at the box score,

    Jay's starters had 15 goals and 13 assists – Jay had 15 goals at half time
    Jay's reserves had 7 goals and 4 – Jay had 7 goals in the second half

    Latino was clearly out of the game in the third when Hen Hud scored their fourth goal

    So, both Fan's and Lax Mom's posts above were BS, ugly ugly BS.

    stop crying JJ is the classiest program out there. They never run up the score on anyone. When you score 15 before half you have to really hold back to not score with hungry back ups that work hard in practice. Rofofsky, Masterson, Murphy, Farrell(first goal of his career)

    I was at the JJ game and i don't know what all you Hen Hud fans were watching. 4 no-namers scored for JJ in the 4th quarter. Their starters came out midway through the third. JJ's 4th goalie went in for 3 minutes! Their JV goalie who got pulled up played 3 minutes and thats classless? They are a very classy team.

    I have scene a lot of sports in this area. But tonight was a shock for me. John Jay showed no class in running up the score. Coach Savastano even admitted to not taking his starters out. He wanted Hen Hud to concede first. It is complete classless sportsmanship. Some starters were in the 4th quarter of a blowout. I am disappointed that a program that strives for excellence would embarrass its community in such a way. The coach should be reprimanded. The life lesson of sports is not being learned at John Jay. Shame on them.

    As a Pville supporter I wanted to say congrats to the Rye team for a good game today. Though it was one sided at the beginning they showed class the whole game. My boys turned it around and worked as hard as they could the second half. It is my hope the rye team and supporters felt our boys played with the same class. They scrap for everything they get and it is a tribute to their coach and staff. They try and get the most out of our boys. Good luck Rye. Thanks for your hard work Coach Cavalluzi. Your boys fought hard.

    very true laxguy11- there jv goalie was acutally in the game in the fourth quarter, and farrel got his first career point. Hen Hud could just not stop them no matter who was on the field. The idea of unclassy is completely false. Good luck to brewster in the finals, i hope they make it a game!

    I have been reading these blogs for a long time and this is the first time I have ever heard JJ called classless. There were no cries of running up the score when JJ beat HH during the season 18-6. You can't blame the back ups for playing hard when they have an opportunity to earn future playing time. JJ could have scored 20+ per game against most section one teams this year if they truly needed or wanted to pad stats. This is a team trying to win STATES not pad STATS. And besides, if a team makes it to the semi finals of section 1 you would think they would be more competitive.

    It was great to see so many Pleasantville supporters show up in Rye today….they were very vocal in a very positive way, just cheering their team on. You could tell the boys were playing with all the emotion and effort they had…they left it all on the field. Congrats on a good season.

    It was good to see Rye put it all together right from the start of the game, instead waiting til the second period (or, in some cases, the second half) to get their heads in the game. Let's go all the way this year boys!

    You may have "scene" a lot of sports in this area, but you didn't "see" John Jay "tonight" – it was an afternoon game.

    The rest of your post is about as reliable.

    I wasn't at the game, but obviously, neither were you. It is clear from the box score that Bocklett, Granelli, Drew, Jones, Stewart, LaPerch and Latino were gone by halftime or soon after. Seven goals were scored by the reserves and one may assume that the 4th qtr was played with running time.

    To claim that Jay ran up the score with their starters is to intentionally ignore the box score.

    I must have been at a diffrent game. At one point in the
    first quarter it was 5-3. Anything could have happened.
    Remember:
    HH lost to Nisky 9-6 JJ lost to Nisky 9-5
    HH lsot to Rye 5-4 in 3OT JJ lost to Rye 9-8 in 2OT

    A Team can come back with 5 or 6 goal and turn the tables;
    ie: Syracuse-Virginia
    Therefore, JJ had to be prepared for anything.

    No disrespect, but these aren't household names:
    Masterson,Rofofsky, Durst, Farrell, Murphy, Lalone.

    Relax Lax Mom, these are the Sectional Semi Finals,
    not the rec program.

    I just can't see how you ask a kid who's been bustin his tail for 3 months to not take the ball to the net. They deserve to score just as much as anyone else playing lacrosse out there. We are in high school and competing for state titles, not class awards.

    Just saw the scores now, the score of the JJ game is pretty surprising, especially after Hen Hud scores a goal more against Nisky than JJ and goes to 3ot against Rye as someone stated above, they're a good team JJ just must've went all out tonight, defensively and offensively. I think it's a little silly to complain about JJ scoring 22 goals, I mean cmon it's the playoffs and I wasn't at the game but from the box score many of their subs scored. What are they supposed to do end the game? Harrison Jones goes 6 and 4, even Chris Bocklet never scored that many points this season, this kid can really score.

    Enough with this classless act crap! JJ was not being classless. They took their starters out mid-way through the 3rd and put in the backups who had 7 of the goals. I don't blame the reserves for scoring that much. They never get to step on the field and when they get a chance to do so, they should be able to have the right to score. There were a couple kids who had their 1st career varsity goals, i do not blame them for scoring, i would have done the same. This was not classless in anyway, so lets just stop the argument.

    To Putnam Valley Players, Fans, and Bloggers:
    First I would like to preface that I usually watch Yorktown and/or Lakeland games but felt this could be the best game of the day so I went to PV TURF. It was a hard fought battle but Byrams goalie was having a real good day.
    If the PV players want to make it sectionals finals next year and win they better go buy a newspaper cut out the article PV UPSET BY BYRAM and pin it up on there bedroom door, there locker at school read it everyday and keep the memory fresh. Next years season starts today with camps, summers leagues, box leagues, travel teams and hard work
    It looks like most of your team is returning; attack, middies, man-up, man-down, and your top seven or eight scores. For next year you need a goalie and two long poles and you'll have a real solid team
    Just remember to work hard on and off the field and keep the memory of the loss fresh to motivate you for next years season
    Good Luck to the Seniors and there future endeavors

    However, according to the Section 1 record book, Bryam Hills last made it to the sectional final in 1987.

    um i go to byram hills, and unless the school is lying, theres a sign in the gym that lists the boys varsity lacrosse sectional wins, and under it there is a clear "1995"...now unless the school is lying and this is a conspiracy, im gonna go with "laxman" and "laxer"

    about JJ being classy or not. The score is tough on a senior from HH who is playing in his last game. However, the sky IS NOT falling. There will be harder obstacles in life than an #@$ whooping in a high school sport.

    I was not at the game…..IF JJ worked the ball around with its backups two or three times before attempting a dodge in a 6 V 6 situation it is not bush league. Any transition situation a player should do what he is taught. Of course there are situation where better players will show class and pull the ball out. Key is they are already star players on the varsity level.

    All these "back-ups" are fighting to be that 4th middie clearing or showing the JJ staff that they "get it" and can be trusted in a game at the next level. Problem is you pull the starters and the "back-ups" are hungrier than anybody on the field. They are striving to be in that next Huntington type game.

    Bottom line….. Did they work the ball around???

    OK, guys, here's the dillio.

    Prior to 2000, there was a Class C/D championship game but the winner did not go to state tournament because there was no state Class C/D tournament.

    The C/D championship apparently was often just two teams playing for this title and there was no playoff involved. On other occasions, there was a semifinal then the final. Also, this game was not played at the same site as the Class A and B sectional championship games.

    As a result, the champions are not listed in the Section 1 lacrosse handbook for all-time sectional champs.

    However, after exhaustive research, I did determine Byram did indeed get to the final in the years mentioned above. In fact, former Lakeland star Christian Johns was the Bobcats' coach.

    So there you have it.

    BTW, the first Section 1 Class C team to advance to the state tournament was the Tommy Werney-led Somers team of 2000 which beat Hen Hud in the title game โ€”ย the first of four straight sectional titles for the Tuskers.

    I'm a parent of a JJ "second stringer", and I can see both sides of this issue. I was sitting next to some of the HH parents and I heard their complaints about lack of class, etc. with JJ continuing to score, and the defense delivering hard hits in front of the JJ goal, when the outcome is no longer in doubt. I can understand where they're coming from as I've been in that situation many times with other kids in other sports. That being said, the second and third stringers have busted their butts all year, and many are playing for spots next year—it's hard to expect them to lay down in a sectional playoff game.

    The JJ team did put their JV goalie in for a few minutes and played their last strings and a couple kids got their first career goals with subs scoring many goals. What are they supposed to do? Apologize for scoring? This is the playoffs, get over it, and don't complain about lack of class just because your team got crushed in the playoffs. Nice season btw, but there was no chance Hen Hud was going to contain the JJ offense. It upsets me seeing parents complaining for the heck of it saying JJ had it's starters in late when that was obviously not the case. I think they just want something to complain about because of the score. What did you expect, there was no one predicting HH to come within 10 goals especially in the playoffs.

    all this complaining about jay reminds me a lot of the whole Tim Schurr talk last year, people have to realize that these aren't little kids anymore, they don't have to be coddled, a 20 goal loss isn't going to scar them for life even if the other team ran up the score (which i don't know either way because i wasn't there)

    I have never posted before but all the talk about the HH/JJ game in my opinion takes away alot from both teams. With the clock running and us down by about 15 goals Jay had a man-up situation and did put their starters back in. I think that is what set off the ill feeling. My son ended his season three out of four years on that field and I have always admired Jay's players and program. There is nothing better then playing against the best and he would have liked to have stayed in till the end no matter what the score. Good luck on Thursday.

    Stop diminishing the Hen Hud program. going almost 500 in the power league is a good season. Losses by 3 or less goals to Nisky, Rye, Somers, Horace Greeley and Wantagh hardly constitutes playing JV lacrosse.

    I totally agree with you that "Purple and Gold's" comment to "JP" about HH "playing JV lacrosse" was not accurate and an unnessary "low blow". I'm a Rye fan and have alot of respect (as I of course do for JJ) for HH's kids, the season, etc.

    It seems from waht I've read that there is no definitive answer to the "pouring it on " question. The problem is that this type of endless debate particularly at this time of season just goes nowhere and inflames people on both sides which can result in these types of comments (from both sides).

    HH is a great program with a good history. I believe that out of the "heat" of this needless debate, that no one (maybe even "Purple and Gold") really feels that HH's varsity "plays like a JV".

    Just be confident in HH's accomplishments this season and look forward to next season and move away from this debate. And the Jay people will focus totally on waht they have to do to win the states and move awat as well!!

    Yawn….More whining from the "sour grape" HH fan section. I guess one way to stay "relevant" in June lacrosse action is to throw stones, about your big/bad opponent.

    When John Jay used to get absolutely blasted by Long Island competition, the conversation was never "what poor sports those L.I. teams were". It was always about what John Jay needed to do to compete at the next level.

    If you were honest – you would look within, instead of blaming someone else.

    'Nuff said about this – there are still games to play.

    JP you sound like a sore loser that can't take being crushed in the playoffs, don't diminish this win when the kids played excellent, and don't start up this needless debate about poor sportsmanship again because you're mad that your team got crushed. It's not even about sportsmanship at this point.

    Stop – this is about the kids, remember? Doesn't matter who was or wasn't playing, or how you word it, it is not pleasant to lose by such a score. Just be gracious winners and look to Thursday.

    and Purple and Gold – your boys DID do what they needed to do to get to the top – you should be pleased, not looking to do the same thing the LI fans did to you, right?

    Slacrosse, I agree that there is no perfect answer here. I'm proud of how hard my son played even though the game was decided, and have great respect for the HH players, who kept their chins up and played hard until the end. I agree with HH Goalie Dad, Lovetownlax and others who point out this is about the kids, and not about a bunch of critics, opinionated parents (myself included)or otherwise. As Teddy Roosevelt once said:

    It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat."

    Absolutely agree with your point, but perhaps I didn't make my point clear enough—the premise that anyone (coaches, players, fans) did anything improper at this game is flawed.

    I was there – there was no poor sportmanship displayed. It was the sectional semi-finals, and as pointed out above – Jay liberally substituted their 2nd and 3rd string in.

    Thank goodness there will be games this Thursday – and hopefully this blog can get back to actually talking about lacrosse games

    On a serious lax note, I understand what you're saying Purple and Gold – to make the decision as to who comes out when, etc., is a dilemma all coaches would love to have. What is enough? – what is too much, thereby poor sportsmanship? I can understand the winning team and the losing team having a different perspective on this. & can't fault the boys who take the field later in such a game to want to perform at their best. One thing to remember is that when the winning team puts in 2nd string, their opponent's starters have been playing hard for half the game already. (I hope 'Town has this dilemma Thursday at 3:00!!!, don't think so, though..)

    Kudos to all of the AA's. Great work this season.

    Just a few observations: I would think that the MVP of the Yorktown team this year is Mike Bonitatibus yet he did not receive the AA designation. Furthermore, Granelli wins 20 of 25 faceoffs versus Yorktown in addition to having a huge number of assists and he is not an AA.

    Would love to be a fly on the wall during these nominations.
