Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Finally…

Had Scarsdale not held on to a 9-8 win over rival Mamaroneck, it would have been an absolutely crushing defeat for the Raiders. Not only because it would have represented a toal postseason choke, but also because Scarsdale desperately wanted to beat Mamaroneck.

Scarsdale led 9-3 midway through the third before five unaswered goals by Mamaroneck.

For four years, Scarsdale’s senior class had come up short against Mamaroneck. And not just in lacrosse. A core group of the Scarsdale lacrosse players also play football and hockey, and several of them mentioned how tired and frustrated they were of always losing to Mamaroneck in each sport. They had NEVER beaten Mamaroneck before.

The postseason matchup provided one final chance for Scarsdale to get it done, and it took advantage. Normally, playing with urgency isn’t a major factor in the playoffs because both teams are equally motivated, but in this game, Scarsdale was definitely the more aggressive, focused team at the outset, and jumped out to an 8-3 halftime lead.

Mamaroneck beat Scarsdale 13-7 in the regular season, a game that perhaps provided a false sense of comfort. When Mamaroneck sensed its season coming to an end, it played a great final 17 minutes, but a six-goal deficit is enormous. To make that up in a small period of time, a team has to be essentially flawless. One huge save by Sam Kressner put an end to a furious comeback.

It gets tougher from here. Scarsdale plays at No. 1 Yorktown in the quarters on Wednesday.

Congratulations/props to the Scarsdale Raiders – Coach Sean O’Rourke and his staff are doing great things with the program and the athletes they have. Like most Section 1 teams, they get little to no coverage in this blog or elsewhere. So it would have been better to see the coverage here focus more on how the big win against a talented cross-town rival was accomplished, rather than on the negative consequences if the game had been lost. Lax’s post was informative and to the point, identifying two significant factors (certainly there were more) which produced the favorable outcome for the eventual winner. Coverage of the Raiders’ next contest, against a storied and formidable opponent in Yorktown, should get more considered attention. Here's to a good game.

jerry u are right, if u look at the last 4 games for northsalem beside bronxville theyve guven up a combined 11 goals, and rye gave up 9 to jj in one game. so i think north salems going to win defianely. 12-2 northsalem

    jorge.

North Salem played its last 7 games in 8 days. and seeing as how they beat Haldane 6 – 1 when they had lost last Thursday 4 – 3 to Haldane, i think its fair to say that they weren't at their best for those 7 games.

    rye will still win
