Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Video report: Sectional playoff preview

May
21

Normally at this time, we have a bunch of scores to report on and get your reactions to — but not tonight.

That’s because it’s the night before the Section 1 tournament starts.

With that in mind, I put together some thoughts.

Hope you enjoy and let me know what you think.

  1. live to lax

I heard through the grapevine that Joey Bonitatibus (Albany-bound Rocky and Michael's brother) got pulled up to varsity.. Is this the first time 3 brothers have been on the same varsity team?

  2. LAX

Interesting… according to the Yorktown roster a few sophomores did get pulled up including Joe Bonitatibus, seems like 4 got pulled up correct me if I'm wrong. Never seen 3 brothers on the same team at the same time before, only 2 grades separate these 3 brothers though and they are great lacrosse players. Whether or not Joey B will get any playing time not sure but good idea to add a little more depth for Yorktown and get him some varsity experience. With the best JV team in the section I don't see why JJ doesn't do that in lacrosse to add a little more depth come playoffs after JV season is over. They do that in football why not in lacrosse? I was expecting some teams to pull up the best JV kids when playoffs come around.

  3. jo jo

JJ has so many already and they wont fit on the bus

  4. LoveTownLax

Syracuse – help – do you know about any other trio of brothers on 'Town V simultaneously? Can't find any evidence, I've checked with some alumni & record books, but you 'da man when it comes to fact checking. GO JOEY B!!!!!!!!!

jo jo – get 2 buses!!!!!!!!!

(sorry if this gets repeated, LTL having a little technical difficuly beyond my control!)

  5. Syracuse

Wow … great question. The closest I think you'll get is Steve, Andy and Rob Kavovit, but Rob was much later. You could go through the 2 bothers list for hours, but I don't think, at least since the early '80s … Wait! I'm not sure but maybe Tim, Tom and Scott Nelson all played together???

We need someone older than myself, who knew the program back in the late 1970s and early 80s to shed some light because I'm just guessing.

  6. Syracuse

OK, Scott Nelson, according to the history I've looked at, played on varsity at Town in 1976-77, so that would lead me to believe he didn't play with his brothers. This is a great question.

You also have the three Dooley brothers, but Tommy is far younger than the other two.

There was also Greg Kavovit, but he played in 84-85, probably just missing Steve, who played goalie in 87-88. Andy was on attack in 88-89 and Rob was later.

I believe there were also three D'Andrias, but if so they didn't all play together.

Yeah, we need a real historian for this one …

  7. LoveTownLax

Syracuse, nope, Scott much older than Tom…YAC website, boys lacrosse Murphy Tourney tab, has records and D-man lists by year, I perused those. No on Kavovit, McCall, Olmstead, McElduff, Dooley, etc. Many duos, but I think we may have a record trifecta for the B's!!!

  8. LoveTownLax

there are 3 D'A's, but Vin says no…

  9. Joe Lombardi

With all the big playoff games, here's a quick note on something that's more important than any game.

Cameron Piorek, a sophomore at Aliso Viejo High School in California, broke his C-7 vertebrae in a lacrosse game and almost died. After undergoing surgery, he's now battling to regain movement in his arms and legs.

    This link has more information.

I want to thank our friend Michael Cummins for passing along this information. Michael, from Santa Ana, Calif., is the Web master of the Foothill Knights' site.

Our thoughts are with Cameron and his family. I know we're all pulling for him during this difficult time.

  10. LoveTownLax

    well said, Joe..

  11. stew

Don't know if Paul (chimp), Carl, and Brian Brezovsky, were all on Varsity at the same time, could have been. Mid 70's Chimp's son now a starting shortstop at Notre Dame.

  12. stew

Forgot to mention John Brezovsky, don't know if he played lax also but he would be in mix with brothers.

  13. lacrosse123

    Great video report.

  14. oldeneagle

    Joe –

    Sad about Cameron Piorek.

An incident like that illustrates the need for Officials to call personal fouls on ALL high hits and for coaches to teach the game within the rules.

That said, it is my opinion that the section 1 officials did a nice job in the majority of the games that I saw this spring. Keep it up boys – we need you !

  15. Kelly Piorek

    Hello
I just wanted to let every one know they can follow Cameron Pioreks progress at caring bridge and type in cameronpiorek
    Thank You Kelly Piorek

  16. Joe Lombardi

Hi Kelly – Thanks for passing that along. Our thoughts are with you guys.
    Joe

  17. slacrosse

Kelly Piorek (Mom of Cameron injured in lacrosse),

Sent Cameron my best wishes the other day and the same for the WHOLE family. You WILL get thru this and Cameron WILL recover and lead a great life.

  18. Sec 1

John Brezovsky 72 Paul 73 Carl and Brian not sure? Scott Nelson was a Senior when Tim was a Freshman Tom was in 7th grade..

  19. LoveTownLax

Kelly, I know all lax moms' thoughts and prayers are with Cameron and your family.

Thanks Stew and Sec 1, website says Carl and Brian played '75 – '76, think the Bonitatibus trio is one for the record books!
