Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Saturday scoreboard

May
17

As we get set for today’s games, as I said last night, Yorktown’s 13-10 win over John Jay has led to some questions.

Among them: Is John Jay’s two-year run as arguably the premier program in the section now over? Is “The King” (Yorktown) not only back — but likely for a while? Especially in light of Yorktown’s probable move back down to Class B (with John Jay) next year?

I’ll be back later with some thoughts. In the meantime, let’s hear yours.

And speaking of last night’s game. It was for a special cause: breast cancer research.

So too, will today’s game between Scarsdale and Brewster.

Today’s noon game at Brewster will raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.

Here’s a complete look at today’s slate:

F.D. Roosevelt at Peekskill, 10 a.m.

Eastchester at Clarkstown North, 10 a.m.

Chatham (N.J.) vs. Briarcliff, 11 a.m.

Ardsley tournament, 11 a.m.

Scarsdale at Brewster, noon

Pleasantville at Pelham, 7 p.m.

Horace Greeley at Arlington, 7 p.m.

Ossining at Hen Hud, 7 p.m.

Metro playoffs, quarterfinals, at Iona Prep

Joe any word on the score up at North?

  2. laxer1010

    chatham bcliff score?

  3. Bcliff

Bcliff loses 12-5, something around there. Chatham was super good, they moved the ball so unbelievably. They had two kids going to navy, one to Delaware, Bucknell and Colgate on offense…they were the real deal, Briarcliff played hard and was with them but made WAY to many mental mistakes to have a realistic shot at beating that team. However it was a great experience before sectionals.

Joe- How come the Briarcliff game from last night wasn't reported?

  4. Bears

briarcliff won last night vs. ossining to win the leage championship

  5. Freedom Writer

Hey joe, just curious who do you think North Salem will end up playing in sectionals?

  6. Slacrosse

    Bcliff,

As you know Chatham is # 3 ranked in NJ (one AHEAD of DELBARTON). They are absolutely in the same class with the very best in Section 1.

So (1) IF the score was really only 12-5 and (2)Chatham kept their 1st team in all game then I think that's a pretty good and very surprising result (I thought Chatham would win by at least 10 goals) and I think should in fact be a confidence booster for Bcliff for the play-offs.

But I'm shocked at your comment that Bcliff made "WAY too many mental mistakes TO HAVE A REALISTIC SHOT AT BEATING THEM". Beating Chatham!!!!!!!!!!!! It's good to have confidence but Please, Bcliff NEVER had ANY CHANCE of beating Chatham under ANY circumstances.

Sorry, Bcliff IS a good team having a really good season and teams in the playoffs must take you guys very seriously but get back to reality.

    Good luck in the playoffs.

  7. IrvMan

Edgemont beat Irvington 8-7 in the 1st round of the Ardsley Tournament. The Panthers played well and came out strong in the 2nd half to win.

  8. hvl

    briarcliff lost 14-5

  9. Joe Lombardi

FW – The Tigers have dropped a few big games of late and have dropped a few spots as a result. Sorry I can't be more specific but it's really hard to when it comes to some of the lower seeds.

  10. Joe Lombardi

    WCLax – Clarkstown North 9, Eastchester 3

  11. laxer1010

did bcliff lose 14-5 or 12-5?...if its 14-5, a 9 goal deficit isnt too much to be super psyched about…not to mention, if your team is up by a whole bunch of goals i wouldnt be surprised if the second team went on

  12. Slacrosse

"Bcliff" reported the Chatham score as 12-7 or "something around there". Actually is was 14-5 and I'm sure that Chatham, like all other teams with class removed their starters at some point during the game so as not to run the score up too badly.

I commend Bcliff for scheduling an out of section opponent. Playing out of Section 1 matches against AT LEAST EQUAL and hopefully BETTER teams is good for Section 1. Town and Jay have done this for years and other Section 1 teams need to ramp up this scheduling.

But Bcliff and other teams that schedule teams that are SO MUCH BETTER then them are not doing themselves (or maybe Section 1 as well?) a favor. A beating is a beating. What did it prove to Bcliff other then the #3 team in NJ crushed them as was expected!

An out of Section 1 game should be a challenge and a POSITIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE, even if you lose. The chance to play a better and "new" team and naturally have to "stretch" to try and win is good! I can't imagine that at some point when the score was getting to, or going to get to "crush level" that at least some and maybe all of the Bcliff kids we're wishing the clock would speed up (not implying that the Bcliff kids weren't working their butts off and trying their best which I'm sure was the case ).

  13. Slacrosse

    laxer1010,

We agree. Didn't see your blog before I just wrote mine.

  14. Joe Lombardi

    Metro playoffs
    quarterfinals at Iona Prep
Iona Prep 20, Rye Country Day 10
    Fordham Prep 12, Riverdale 6

  15. laxsauce

    Chatam 14 – B-Cliff 5

Chatam's 1st team never left the field.

confirmed. that said, they worked BC, but BC played hard and worked the field w/ one of the better teams around imo. Respectable i think.

  16. laxsauce

    5-2 1st half btw..

  17. Levine

Non believers beware!!! The cliff is hungry. A good loss right before the playoffs has many payoffs!!!! Watch out for the Briarcliff Bears

  18. laxman34

    whats the horace greeley game?

  19. fan of fan of fan of fan of

whats the horace greeley game score**

  20. BigBadBear

    SLacrosse:

Very much appreciate your comments, I think they are generally right. BUT….we get killed all year for not playing anyone, so then we schedule a great team (after, btw, the coaching staff working for months to get any kind of out-of-section team to agree to play) we agree to play Chatham, which was our THIRD game in a row. I can almost guarantee that every kid on the team thought this was a VERY positive experience.

Finally, the entire Briarcliff community says a big thank you to the folks in Chatham, they were AMAZING hosts. The AD and the Coach met all of us as we drove in, and then after the game, all the kids had a huge lunch, gratis. Believe me, we represented Section 1 quite well, more than anything we just ran of of gas in the second half.

  21. Slacrosse

    BigBadBear,

Hear you. Didn't realize that it was so difficult to sched. out of Section games. Frustrating as Bcliff is a good team and could get some W's vs. other legitimately STRONG out of Section comp. and I hope Bcliff has some success with this in the future. Also glad to hear that the kids came out of this with a positive experience.

    Good luck in the playoffs

  22. laxin

If its so hard to play out of section how about play the Yorktowns, Lakelands, Ryes, and Jays of the world, in section and would still be more than enough of a challenge for Da Bears

  23. Bcliff

Believe me Coach Meola tried to schedule those teams and asked basically everyone…All saying that their schedule was full and maxed out because, like Briarcliff, as we all know, those teams try to schedule tough out of section-league games..

  24. Levine

Think about it.. Briarcliff taking up this much blog space and this many people talking about it…. We have arrived!!!.... With a positive youth program taking off and outstanding coaching, watch the Bears this year and for years to come!!! In the section and beyond!! Go Bears!

  25. slacrosse

    Levine,

I'm all for whatever it takes to take Section 1 teams to the highest level possible. Your youth program is terrific and critical to deep and consistent success and playing good out of Section 1 teams like you guys are trying to do is the way to go!!

    Bcliff,

Understand. Sure hope Coach Meola keeps trying and has some luck with future scheduling. Like all teams in Section 1 if Bcliff keeps playing well particularly in the Sections that will be great in and of itself and hopefully that will also help raise Bcliff's "recognition factor" and with that, an easier task of scheduling! From what you,"Levine" and others are saying sounds like you guys are on the right path. Keep it up!!

  26. lax

Levine: The only people talking about Bcliff on these blogs are Bcliff fans and people responding to the comments of Bcliff fans. Trust me, you are having a great season but you have not arrived. Consider this: next year you lose your top two scorers, including a great player in Eric Brandel.

  27. LL

    "Levine"

the enthusiasm and attiude is great, but Briarcliff hasn't arrived yet. having some knowledge of the program, they are certainly on the right path. having the youth program is critical. the smaller schools in class C have less athletes to compete and those athletes also need to be 'lacrosse' players. having a tsick in your hand for 10 years prior to be a varsity player helps.

yorktown has a great program and everyone is aware, but it starts w/ the youth program and ends with the alumni. there is tremendous support throughout for the huskers and that blueprint needs to be followed by teams such as Briarcliff.

my only point is that saying 'Briarcliff has arrived' is uninformed. when the Bears begin winning section titles and then have the personnel to fill the vacant spots the following year, then they have arrived. coach meola is a good coach and i'm sure it can happen down the line.

in the meantime, the Bears had a very good season and I wish them luck in the playoffs. I also have to wish all the luck in the world to Town ! Go Town !

  28. hopkattack

Wait and see Rye go bye and you'll think it's a sin, but Bears will win

  29. Tin Can

    Bad poetry, but right idea

  30. YAC LAX

I like Briarcliff as an underdog…It could happen

  31. BigBadBear

    Bear Fans:

Can we please just let our play talk?

  32. YAC LAX

    We will see

  33. What?

    BigBadBear:

Now you want to let people's play talk? You must have had a revelation.

  34. BigBadBear

    what?

Yup, I have…trying to limit my comments to reponsd to folks taking shots at us only…

  35. Slacrosse

    BigBadBear,

Great advice. Hope the Bcliff fans follow it.

Results (hopfully good ones) say it all.

  36. Slacrosse

    To "Waht",

Actually I think if you look at BigBadBear commnets he's been a voice of reason.

Think it was other Bcliff fans with good example of "hopkattack" above that got/get all worked up and will only make it worse IF Bcliff does not live up to his hype!

  37. GIGO lax

Ok wait until we get there but if we play rye. Dooley don't count brandel and the boys out

  38. Gaya

one game at a time. Wait 4 the seatings

  39. Slacrosse

    BigBadBear,

Some of you fans are still not listening to you ("let out play talk" and "Gaya" ("take it one game at a time").

Now "GIGO LAX" is telling the Dooleys "dont count brandel and the boys out" .

Firstly the Rye coaches and the players will in no way "count ANYONE out" they play.

Secondly haven't noticed ONE comment from a Rye fan dissing Bcliff, talking about beating them, etc.

Bcliff fans, go into a "quiet phase" and do your talking on the field with W's. It's simple and no one can argue with it.

  40. BigBadBear

    Slacrosse:

all I can say is I doubt this is coming from the players, and in fact, I can't even say it is coming from b'cliff people, given the nature of a blog…Rye is an example we hope to emulate at some point, I KNOW I speak for the players and the coaching staff when I say that..

  41. Slacrosse

    BigBadBear,

Well said and I get the feeling you really are in the "know".

Prob my fault for even carrying on with the subject and replying but thought if fans or players I was actually giving them good advice.

    Enough said by me.

    Good luck and play well.

  42. Rixracks

    AGREE!!!!!!!
