Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Math class

May
15

I didn’t take math my senior year so this post is a little dangerous.

Here is what teams need to do to qualify for sectionals. (The seeding meeting is on Tuesday at Clarkstown South.)

Division A: Have a lacrosse team. They’re in. Congratulations.

Division B: Win 30 percent of either their overall games, league games, or games against teams in their classification.

Division C: Win 40 percent of either their overall games, league games, or games against teams in their classification.

Teams from Division A take all the top seeds automatically, followed by Division B and C. Teams from B can’t be seeded higher than teams from A and teams from C can’t he seeded higher than those from B. No matter what.

We obviously have really strong favorites in Yorktown (Class A), John Jay (B) and Rye©. All the seedings and brackets will be determined next Tuesday.

What team has the best chance to win a sectional title other than the Big Three?

Wait, I thought it was that teams in the power league get preference, not teams in division A?

  2. section1

yes jeff….i agree with ?....only the teams in powerleague recieve seeding preference.

I just confirmed again with Section 1 boys lacrosse chairperson Vincent Louther that all Division A teams will be seeded higher than all Division B teams. Hope that helps.

  5. section1

Wow- thanks for confirming jeff…. I just find it ridiculous that a team like pleasantville, a div A team, who in reality deserves close to a 5 seed in C will now most likely the 4 seed that briarcliff, a division b team, actually deserves….it just seems odd.

  6. thursday?

If the seeding meeting is Tuesday than why will "all the seedings and brackets will be determined next Thursday" ?

  7. jgold

    sorry, tuesday.

  8. Syracuse

jgold … see if you any background in amateur rocketry you wouldn't be having these problems with simple math. Then again, I applaud you for trying to make sense of this mess.

  9. Syracuse

I think Brewster has the best chance of any other team not named Yorktown, John Jay and Rye.

They would be a serious threat in any class. Their offense is probably the second or third-best in the section. This may be a one-shot deal for the Bears, but if so … I wouldn't be too shocked if they somehow beat Jay. I'm not expecting it by any means, but this is one dangerous, dangerous team.

You could are gue they belong on the top 3, though the argument would be more of a show of respect than based on truly debatable fact.

Still, Jay don't play a great game, they could lose.

Syracuse: It is completely unacceptable that you are not going to The Game.
In between your 245 blog posts per day, come up with an excuse to miss work.

  11. jgold

Just got off the phone with Stubhub…prime seats at Charlie Murphy Field are going for 275 dollars per.

I'm going to see someone about the blog posts issue. It's starting to affect my private life …

You know what I do for a living. Days off are few and far between …

section1 – How can you say that Briarcliff deserves a higher seed than P'ville when Bcliff plays a schedule full of teams that have combined records of 500 or below, They dont deserve a high seed because there is NO strength in their schedule what so ever besides L/p or Pville. And out of those two games they only beat a struggling pville team.

  14. LoveTownLax

Not all of us know, Syracuse. but we are curious!

  15. Miller

Seems a lot of people are harsh on Pleasantville, myself included . I think we need to look at the big picture. They have the same record as Put Valley and an even record against common opponents as both Put Valley and Byram Hills. Pville played both those teams very close and as I remember they had a ton of penalties those games. They have played everyone tough except Town and Brewster. They also played 3-4 games without their best defensemen,an all-section empire player. I think with him they win a few more games. They played a B team in Ardsley and won 15-2. Briarcliff did beat Pville, but a won goal win in OT is not a declaration of superiority.with that logic P'ville is better than Somers. It seems the "vaunted" P'ville defense is the problem therethey give up 10+ goals a game. Rye gives up 4, 1 in each of the last 2 games.I think P'ville is playing better than this blog says, and Put Valley gets a free pass.By beating Somers,Suffern Pleasantvilee has shown they deserve to be an "A" team.Small schools playing that schedule tend to lose close games. It should be a fun week when sectionals begin. As I stated very early Class belongs to Rye until proven otherwise.Compare P'ville,PV,Byram and Briarcliffs schedules and then comment on each team. Just thought a past Pville basher would step in and defend them. Good luck to all in sectionals

    Hopkinslax:

Sorry, not sure what you mean? (and I am a big Hop fan. "We want more"!).

Of our 15 wins, 7 have come against +.500 teams, and 1 against a team exactly .500. And of course, one of those sub-.500 teams that you claim was "struggling" is, ironically, the team that is likely to get a higher seed than us. And, you of course conveniently forget Chatham, a team we are traveling to play, that we completely re-arranged our schedule to play, will be our third game in a row, and that is nationally ranked. One last fact, every independant poll I have seen (and I claim no special lax knowledge, believe me) has us in the top 4 in C.

It's all good, I hope that the Section 1 powers look at it the way I did, of course. Either way, we will come to play and to win.

  17. 516

The seeding system is ridiculous…teams should all push for the highest pre-season rank possible knowing that even if they do terribly during the regular season, they will have an easier road to (and through) sectionals.

...sounds like those at the top, program wise, call the shots w/ these decisions.

  18. joey mac

yea but then they may not win 1 game, how is that for your program

  19. 516

    -j mac

assuming you're a half-way decent program, you'll win a few of your cross-over games, get better through the tougher competition and then HOST lesser teams during sectionals…not bad for a program.

  20. BigBadBear

just want to be clear, my comments were not intended in any way to be "p'ville basshing"...nor is it a declaration of "superiority"...we won one game, easily could have gone the other way, we have huge respect for p'ville lax…strictly trying to limit my comments to all the b'cliff bashers saying we didn't play anybody…

  21. Pville Watcher

Many of the goals scored against Pleasantville have come from turnovers, transition, and not controlling the ball. The defense has given up some goals, but they are still a very solid defense with a very good goalie. The goals against is not a fair picture. If this team plays like its capable of playing, they will compete with anyone in class C.

  22. WaterBoy

Pville Watcher must be the PV's goalies father. " very good goalie" lets be serious.

  23. laxer1010

there is no way briarcliff deserves a higher seed than pville – my predictions for the top 5 seeds in Class C…

Rye, Byram, Put Valley, Pville, Briarcliff

  24. raider79

1010 you are dead on with that statement from SOS alone. Pville watcher I'd say the "...boy" is a goale or the father of one that doesn't get the pub wouldn't you?

  25. ?

how could briarcliff not deserve a higher seed than pville when they beat them head to head….that makes no sense

  26. 516

    -?

I happen to know that also occurred last year – Ardsley beat Bronxville yet was seeded lower than them during sectionals…see my post above about the ridiculous nature of the system.

  27. laxer1010

    ? –

so pleasantville beat somers head to head, right? if they were in the same class would u say pville deserves a higher seeding than somers does? i hope you wouldnt, bc if you think that then you dont know much about lacrosse. you cant just look at one game and judge seeding based upon it

  28. hopkinslax

But still regardless of the opposing records of the teams Bcilffs played they are still playing weak teams that only have winning records b/c they're playing other weak teams. And im sorry i didnt see chatam on your schedule but still bcliffs chances are still slim against a nationally ranked team.
