Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Tuesday's games

May
13

Brewster has surged into the “Fab Five” to establish itself as the best team in Putnam County.

But who’s No. 2?

The Bears defeated both Put Valley and Mahopac handily.

Today, those teams meet in Mahopac.

Somers has traveled to over the TZ and defeated both Clarkstown South and Suffern. Can the Tuskers complete a Rockland County hat trick by beating North Rockland?

In its final game before the Yorktown showdown Friday night, John Jay hosts Byram Hills in a battle of teams with 11-4 records. Can the ‘Cats keep it close against the Indians?

Those are among the main story lines for today’s games.

As always, please post any info/thoughts.

Here’s the schedule:

    is there an update yet?

  2. Syracuse

Sorry fellas. At this point I don't have anything for you on Yorktown-Scarsdale or JJ-Byram Hills. I hope to at some point.

  3. Joe Lombardi

Here's our first batch of scores:

John Jay 18, Byram Hills 3
    Mahopac 12, Putnam Valley 2
Roosevelt 6, Newburgh Free Academy 1

  4. sec1lax

    Pac over PV 12-2

Perrelle dropped another 6 goals, Pac's defense was solid, Mcgugian was stellar in goal stopping 18-20 Tigers shots.

  5. lax

    yorktown 14 scarsdale 5

  6. HL

I thought town had 15, but I could be wrong. Scarsdale took a 2-1 lead early, but then YHS reeled off 11 straight to close the half up 12-2. Give the Scarsdale players credit, despite the score, they never quit and played hard the whole way.

  7. 12rock

So what did you think, someone had to pay the piper after JJ lost to Rye…. so it was B hills …tough break there fellas ….. At the Put valley game was i the only one who noticed the debut of Niles K's mohawk very nice if 12 rock must say so…..hmmmm thats all folks yes really thats all

  8. asdf fan

    oh wow congrats to mahopac

  9. Syracuse

Yorktown 15, Scarsdale 5. I'm told the bench was emptied to start the second half.

  10. jj parent

I saw one of the JJ players hit one of the Byram players during the handshake following the game, and I would just like to apologize for this player's disgrace to his team, his coach, his school, and the game of lacrosse

  11. Erik

Brewster 12 Pville 4. PVille came out their usual self, asleep and gave up 8 goals in the first quarter. Then actually played a great defensive game allowing only 4 more goals the entire second half. They seemed to give a lot of different looks on defense which held Brewsters offense somewhat in check ( if you want to call it that)Pleasantville's offesne simply cannot catch or throw. I do not understand this at all. They played defense the entire second half. Their goalie is the sleeper of the section and everytime they stopped Brewster, their offesne would literally throw it out of bounds. They stand still often. The biggest disappointment of the season by far.

  12. lax playa

    rye 4 suffern 1
suffern played well but couldnt put the ball in the goal
rye had the ball most of the game but couldn't connect
    both teams had great goaltending

  13. Syracuse

    Wait, Rye won only 4-1???

  14. laxwatcher

Greeley topped mamk 17-13. Shane ferguson dropped 6 and 2 for the tigers. I still have no idea how Scarsdale beat Greeley, because Mamk dominnated Scarsdale 13-7 in game that was not as close as the score

  15. Joe Lombardi

    Brewster 13, Pleasantville 3
    Peekskill 9, Kennedy 6
    Somers 10, North Rockland 8

  16. Joe Lombardi

    Here are some highlights:

Somers 10, North Rockland 8: Erik Pfiffner scored three goals for the Tuskers, who outscored the Red Raiders 5-1 in the second quarter. Dylan Haas and Joe Marasco each had two goals and an assist for the Tuskers. Greg Petre had two goals. Russell Santiago had three goals and an assist for the Red Raiders.

John Jay 18, Byram Hills 3: Will Stewart scored four goals. Chris Bocklet had three goals and three assists, Harrison Jones three goals and one assist and Tyler Granelli two goals and three assists. Steven Greene had a goal and two assists for the Bobcats.

Mahopac 12, Putnam Valley 2: Tyler Perrelle led the Indians with six goals. Johnny McGuigan made 18 saves. Jimmy Van De Veerdonk and Dillon Chestnut each scored a goal for the Tigers.

Roosevelt 6, Newburgh Free Academy 1: Matthew Dimone scored three goals.

Peekskill 9, Kennedy 6: Darius Doway scored six times for the Red Devils. Giuseppe Rice had two goals and five assists. Mike Delavergne led the Gaels with five goals.

Brewster 13, Pleasantville 3: Nick Alfonzetti had four goals and two assists and Drew Strubbs-Stroud had three goals and one assist for the Bears. Teammate Ethan Meyer had a goal and three assists. Kevin Reda scored three goals for the Panthers.

  17. Paul C

what a joke BH is. Take a look they have lost 3 of there last 5 and are lucky its not 4 out of 5 since they squeaked past Mahopac. Finally they played some more quality teams and they fold like a tent. Can't wait to see Rye put a whipping on them. So much for Fritz being coach of the year.

Pville is a disaster!! What happened to that team. So much for all that preseason hype

  18. Lax Goalie

tht kid mcguigan is playin very good this year and is not really noticed
    Rye only won 4-1???

  19. Syracuse

Paul C throwing haymakers at everyone.

Don't call it a comeback. He's been here for years.

  20. HL

Syracuse – yes, Yorktown called off the dogs to start the 2nd half.

  21. LacrosseInsider

Jay was up 15 -2 at the half and then pulled all of their starters to start the 3rd. The second team still did a nice job. Granelli continued to dominate on faceoff's. No disrespect to Byram, it is amazing that they are ranked in the state in class C(I think that is what I heard). They never had a chance, it was like Jay was playing a freshman team. Also, the comment by the person who said a Jay player hit a Byram player is most likely false, I watched the handshakes and did not see anything negative.

  22. LAX

JJ outscored Byram 10-0 in the second quarter, great game JJ.

  23. Seniorlaxfan

Niles K rules, the future of Lacrosse in Section 1. the mohawk says it all.

  24. LAX

Just got news JJ JV won 16-0 too, wow.

  25. Byramlax

Paul C, in byram's last 5 they have played rye, JJ, mahopac, pv, and section 2's queensbury, i don't think winning the the queensbury and put valley games, losing to mahopac by 1, and losing to rye and JJ is folding like a tent. Most people expected byram to lose to all of these teams so a 2-3 record in these big games aint all that bad.

  26. Syracuse

    Byram,

Not for nothing but if you guys had lost to Queensbury or Put Valley you would have serious problems. A win over Mahopac would have helped your argument. Paul C should not be slapping your around. Jay is supposed to beat Byram 100 out of 100 times, by at least 15 each time anyway. He's just being a bully.

  27. NRlax

joe what did the rye suffern game look like?

  28. oldeneagle

Hen Hud / Fox Lane ?

  29. fan of jj parent

u clearly did not watch the same handshake bc of course they hit #16 out of pure jealously. don't try to defend a dumb action by one of the john jay players. it was unnecessary and i thought a player on a team that is supposed to be competing for a state championship would have more class.

  30. jeter

nrlax- ugly, very ugly. ryes offense was horendous only scoring two goals in the forth quarter to put a nail in the coffin. give credit to suffern they had a tough d or so rye made it seem. rye had a good amount of chances as awful as they payed but shot right at the goalie. ryes d played ok giving up more shots then usual but still having a shutout through most of the third quarter. rix was exceptional in goal. a game rye would like to forget.

  31. state chmpshp

stupid and unclassy actions like that r the reason jj choked in the state final game last year

  32. Slacrosse

From above it sounds like Suffern played well but I'm very surprised and disapppointed Rye only beat Suffern 4-1.

It seems like after the JJ win things have been "shaky" GIVEN RYE's QUALITY.

"Shaky" is playing a VERY poor 1st half vs Mamar (5-4 Mamar at half and it could have been a larger gap) EVEN THOUGH Rye ended ended up beating Mamar by a big margin.

Shaky is vs Suffern when rye controlled the ball for most of the game (not surprising given their face-off guy) BUT COULD ONLY SCORE 4 GOALS!! Credit to suffern's goalie but if you're as good as Rye the winning margin SHOULD have been 7-10 goals, not 3!! At least rye's D only held Suff to 1 goal!

But this play concerns me for a team that expexts to get to Hofstra and where some knowledgable people have said they may even be able to get by Manhassat as they did JJ.

They have two more games left and they really need to PUT IT ALL TOGETHER SHOWING 2 VERY STRONG HALVES against their next two Section I OPPONENTS.

Come on Rye, you're # 3 in the Power rankings. You've got the ability and coaching to show this quality for 2 straight quarters on the field.

  33. Goo

Hey, who invited the idiots into this thread?....

  34. 16 Fan

after reading the post from fan of jj parent i feel as though i could cry

  35. Joe Lombardi

    Lakeland/Panas 15, Clarkstown South 3
    Rye 4, Suffern 1

  36. LAX

Fan of JJ parent is not being serious in case someone didn't notice.

  37. LAX

Lol this kid is pretty funny though.

  38. fan of fan of jj parent

lax- actually it was pretty serious. this player had zero class and is immature enough that he could not hold down his emotions to just shake someones hand. have pride in the jersey u have on.

  39. Syracuse

I know. That is kind of messed up now that I think about it. I stick my neck out there and say Rye is going to win a state championship and they go and do that???

Slacrosse … someone … what gives here?

  40. Scout42

    Paul C –

you need to stop this nonsense. in case byramlax didnt lay it out enough for you, the last 5 games have been against premier section 1 programs and an undefeated section 2 opponent…going 2-3 in those games is absolutely NOTHING like" folding like a tent." Byram lost, we knew this was going to happen. like syracuse said, jj SHOULD beat byram 100 out of 100 times, jj is a great team…make your posts more intelligent please…youre taking up space on this blog

  41. Slacrosse

    JJ Parent,

If a JJ kid really hit someone in the post-game hand-shake my respect to you for your opology on behalf of all the great classy JJ fans. Incidents like this are the extreme exception but when they happen your expression is a lesson in maturity and respect that all of us should take up.

  42. OleRy Laxman

Rye wins and it was ugly, but a ugly W is better than a nice L, ask JJ….Seems like the Ryemen play to the level of the opposition, perhaps looking down the road a bit…I sure hope that stopped today as we know what happens when you look past the team on the playing field…Rye needs to follow the mantra of Dooley Camp…Head, Heart and Hustle, if that happens, all is possible…Beware of PV, they are lurking hoping to catch the Garnets on an "off" day. Rix was most impressive today and Rye can thank him for this W.

  43. Joe Lombardi

Congrats to Yorktown senior Brendan Kurpis who scored his 100th varsity goal in today's 15-5 win at Scarsdale. Teammate John Ranagan scored a career-high six goals and added an assist. Sophomore Joey Porcelli scored his first varsity goal.

  44. Joe Lombardi

    Here are some more highlights:

Lakeland/Panas 15, Clarkstown South 3: John Fitzpatrick led the Rebels with four goals and two assists. Mike Mackay made 12 saves.

Rye 4, Suffern 1: Sam Fulmer, the hero of the Garnets' big win over JJ last week, led the Garnets with a goal and two assists.

Greeley 17, Mamaroneck 12: Jason Kerstein had four goals and four assists for the Quakers. Shane Ferguson led the Tigers with six goals and two assists.

  45. Joe Lombardi

Bronxville 13, Pelham 5: Chris Walsh had four goals and two assists and teammate Chris Murray, a senior midfielder, scored his first varsity goal. Nick Perrorazio had two goals and an assist for Pelham.

Hen Hud 10, Fox Lane 7: Andrew Nieminski and Collin Parkhurst each had two goals and three assists. Pat Johnson had three goals and two assists for the Foxes.

  46. L@X

maybe ryes is not as good as everyone thinks? 4-1 to suffern?? if this team expects to win a state championship they need to play a little more like the JJ game and not the hen hud game (everyone remember that 5-4 in triple ot) not good. they have good wins but not great wins they only beat brew and prep by a goal each. their offense is nothing to write home about. if they didn't have the best defense in Section 1 they would have trouble being above .500 they have the talent but they choose not to use it some games. why???
they must stop or for sure it will be a fourth straight loss to a LI team at hofstra.

  47. Syracuse

    L@X,

Yorktown only beat Brewster by 1.

I think, with the way things are these days, a 1-goal win over Brewster, a 1-goal win over Iona Prep, a 1-goal win over John Jay and a 3-goal win over Suffern, all in the same season, is plenty good.

You don't have to be the greatest offensive team in the world to win a state title. Sure it helps, but defense, solid goalie play and opportunistic offense (as in riding like a madman and forcing turnovers) is what really separates the men from the boys.

  48. Slacrosse

    Syracuse,

Hey don't stress. You've made enough good objective predictions and offered enough good advice over the season that if Rye doesn't earn your confidence from their performances then I'd expect you or anyone else to change their minds/predictions.

While I am concerned about some inconsistency in these last two games I've not at all lost confidence in Rye's ability. Coaching is too good and these kids are great athletes with alot of pride. I expect them to "get it right" as the Dooleys expect from them during the next two Section 1 games and show very strong and consistent performance during both halves.

  49. section 1

    North Salem beat Harrison 6-4

  50. fan of fan of fan of fan of

You never know what went on during the game. Maybe it was just a stupid immature act or maybe the player said something about the jj players teammate or did a cheap check to the player who threw the punch. Don't say the kid has "zero class" because he may have been defending one of his teammates.

  51. sec1lax

If McGuigan had been in net against Byram the they would have scored know where near 11 goals against mahopac.

  52. Paul C

    Byramlax AND Scout42

I AM WASTING SO MUCH SPACE BUT YOU STILL FELT THE NEED TO RESPOND TO MY COMMENTS. LOOK SHOULD WE ALL STAND UP AND CLAP FOR THE BIG WIN OVER THE SECTION 2 POWERHOUSE QUEEN SOMETHING? YA YOUR RIGHT WHAT A GREAT WIN OVER A TEAM THAT WAS GOOD LAST IN PUT VALLEY. ITS JUST TOO BAD THAT YOU DIDN'T BEAT THAT SOLID PUT VALLEY TEAM OF LAST YEAR BUT INSTEAD YOU BEAT THAT 6 & 9 TEAM OF THIS YEAR. OH YA I GUESS ANOTHER QUALITY WIN WAS AGAINST PVILLE THEY DID HAVE A GOOD TEAM LAST YEAR. IT DOESN'T MATTER THAT THEY ARE 5 & 10 THIS YEAR. LISTEN BH HAS DONE A GOOD JOB OF BEATING EVERYBODY THEY SHOULD BEAT BUT JUST SHOW ME THERE 3 QUALITY WINS. THEY ARE RANKED IN THE TOP 15 IN NY STATE. I JUST GOT TIRED OF HEARING HOW THEY WERE GOING TO PLAY WITH JJ PRIOR TO THIS GAME AND SOME KID WAS GOING TO CONTROL THE GAME.

  53. section 1

the expression "tongue in cheek" springs to mind…

  54. L@X

    Cuse
you are probably right. i'm just feeling frustrated with the way rye is playing with teams they should be killing. a good team does not "play down" to the opposition. rye needs to play ever game with the same intensity. they can not simply take games off because they think they will just show up and win. the good thing to come out of that is rye really rises the level when going against top teams (expect town) i hope your prediction of their state playoff dreams comes true. good luck rye!!!

  55. Syracuse

If I'm Rye and it's fans I'm actually happy I don't have a high-powered offense for one simple reason: I can never get get complacent if I have to play each and every possession like its my last.

    That's why Rye is good.

  56. laxer1010

    Paul C –
no one said they were gonna play with jj…i havent seen one post saying that byram was gonna give jj a game, bc clearly they werent…also, this whole 16 nonsense…its clearly a joke…i dont think anyone took that seriously but you

  57. Slacrosse

    L@X,

Agree with your frustrations on Rye. But as I said earlier I believe Dooley and the team expect to turn it up to VERY STRONG 4 quarter consistent play.

Hear vs Suff they were shooting too many right at the goalie (dont know from how far out). This doesn't put up points vs most decent goalies. Need to keep it on the ground or find good targets if not.

  58. Slacrosse

    L@x and Syracuse,

They say "good offenses win games but good defenses win championships". If Rye's offense is not that high-powered(still have time to improve here)then lets hope that their D does the job.

  59. goosesilly

Earlier today, I was checking out LaxPower and was puzzled to see that Rye will be playing Poly Prep (NY Ivy) and Put Valley tomorrow??? Before that info was put up today, LaxPower shows Put Valley; today, it shows Poly Prep and Put Valley.

  60. Paul C

DOES BH HAVE 3 QUALITY WINS IN LAX?? ANYBODY ANYBODY?? HAVE OVERRATED THEY ARE, STATE RANKED…COME ON WHAT A JOKE!!

BHILLS STICK TO THE SOFT SPORTS YOUR SCHOOL IS GOOD AT TENNIS, CROSS-COUNTRY, SOCCER.

  61. Paul C

    TEST

  62. Slacrosse

    goosesilly,
