Well folks. The hour glass is starting to run out.
OK, maybe not exactly in this picture, but it was the best one I could find.
By tomorrow, as promised, I will have to finally decide on a prediction for Friday night’s John Jay-Yorktown showdown.

In the meantime, could you help me out?
Let’s hear your picks for the game. Please give scores and scenarios.
Looking forward to seeing what you folks come up with.

Yorktown 11-JJ 9
Ranagan and Froats have 2 goals a piece.
JJ 13- Yorktown 8
yorktown wins 8-7 in OT interlicho has 3 goals and scores in overtime to win
The biggest upset of the year is already in. Lombardi put this post up four hours ago and Syracuse hasn't chimed in.
God only knows what he's doing right now, but I'm about an hour away from calling the police to get a search committee ready.
Syracuse…where are you?
KI puts on a show at home 5gs while Bocklet throws in 4….Ranagan is too much between the lines for Town… 11-7 Town
11-7 John Jay
ive played both teams, and i predicted the rye-jj game in early april so ill go with jj 12, yorktown 7. and interlichio was not impressive at from wat i saw.
Interlichio leads the team in goals and points (as a sophomore), hes pretty fun to watch…
-as a matter of fact the whole team is fun to watch, Froats, Kurpis, Ranagan , Rock , Kevin, play amazing with eachother and share the ball so nicely that it makes their offense look pretty great at times…Good luck Jay
Granelli dominates on face offs and Jay wins 13 – 11.
I agree Kevin I. will have a big day, he steps up in every big game Town plays….Froats is a workhorse between the lines while Ranagan is a monster at the X…If Mike B. can have a nice game between the pipes I see Town pulling away 14-8
I see JJ winning this one 14-12, no OT, being tied at the half, on JJ Jones will have 4 goals, Bocklet with 3, Granelli with 1 and 4 assists, Drew with 2 and 1. Interlicchio will have a big game for Town and Rocky B will compete with Drew at midfield. It can go either way though of course.
JGold you're killing me. You really are.
I'm still torn between Yorktown 1-0 and John Jay 30-29. Leave me be in my bat cave while I crunch more numbers. ...
Just checked Interlichio is second in points behind Kurpis but he's 1st in goals.
Yorktown 11
John Jay 9
Bad karma will come back to haunt JJ, after the bad sportmanship showed in their game today…
Yorktown's high octane offense will be too much for the Indians, as Ranagan's work ethic and hustle, along with Rocky and Interlicchio's pure skill, not to mention Kurpis and Froats, will be too much for the fairly new JJ defense.
Not saying Yorktown's defense isn't new, however, Ethan Fox is one of the most solid defenders in the state. Although Jay has the best player in the section in Bocklet, Yorktown's offense seems like it's too much for the JJ defense.
On top of the high powered attacks of these teams, to top it all off, the matchup between the pipes is very inticing. The two best goalies in the state, both up for All-American will be going at it, and I see the goalie with the better game carrying their team to victory. Michael Bonitatibus will play strong as he has been all season, but the question remains whether Yorktown will come out laxidazical like they did against Darien and Lakeland/Panas, or will we see the Yorktown that came out against Chaminade, St. Anthony's, and Wilton?
It's going to be a matter of who wants it more, because these teams are so evenly matched, but I see Yorktown taking this one home, because they're out for revenge after their losses for the past two seasons.
Bocklet will get his points, but if town limits their attack, wins faceoffs, and gets their fast break offense running, Yorktown will come away with the victory.
John jay 11 ytown 7 i dont see town winning this one
i dont get why this is even up for debate…granelli is too good on the faceoffs, theyre gonna possess the ball all game…
JJ 15- Town 9
Okay can I clear this up. Theres absolutley NO bad sportsmanship on Jay's part today at the game. Ask 16 what went on with him and #48. Pickel is the quietest kid on the field and understoody that 16 was down in the dumps…while losing by 13…so he did not retaliate. There was no bad sportsmanship from the Indians as usual. Savs won't and never will tolerate it.
Now to the important stuff.
At first I truly thought yorktown had this on loc….o wait nope then i realized they were playing John Jay…14-10 Granola goes nuts 4 Gs 5 As 16-0 on faceoffs. Wile Bill proves his sneakyness and throws in 3. Big win thats it the whole thing lets go home.
not sure how karma and sportsmanship will come into play… i don't think its affected jj in previous… jj did beat fox lane by the same score and then went on to beat duxbury a game later.
jj defense will be weak with the strong y-town offense…but i have jj scoring enough goals and latino having enough big saves for jj to prevail.
jj:13 ytown: 11
yorktown 12 JJ 12 ends in a tie for the 1st time in section 1 history!
Couple things…
anyone know who when and where Iona Prep will play next…I heard saturday but nobody had specifics…
Iona Prep will be playing in the Metro playoffs as the top seed from the CHSAA.
Here are the first-round matchups, all of which will be played on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Hackley at Iona Prep
St. Francis Prep at Midwood
Poly Prep at Rye Country Day School
Xaverian at Fieldston
Stepinac at Portledge
Farrell at Trinity
New Dorp at Riverdale
Long Island Lutheran at Fordham Prep
John Jay by 4….it will happen.
Why is Yorktown playing a game on Thursday, a day before the JJ game?????
Green – The Ytown-JJ game was originally scheduled for Saturday. It was moved to Friday because Yorktown Community Day is on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Yorktown and JJ agreed to rescheduled the game to Friday night. JJ first rescheduled its scheduled Thursday game vs. Mahopac for next Wednesday. Yorktown was unable to reschedule its Thursday game vs. Mamaroneck, which is senior night and a 7 p.m. game.
john jay by 2
and Joe, I believe it could not be rescheduled for Saturday night because John Jay's prom is that night?, which is what 'Town would have preferred. at least that is what LTL was told.
time is ticking…..Joe…..no more Jinx bombs! :o)
Syracuse – are you there? did you come up with the "perfect plan?" Perhaps we can have it declared a State Holiday?
laxer1010,
Not sure about Granelli controlling face-offs all game Vs Town.
Versus rye think he controlled the 1st half but in second half he started crossing the line and losing the ball. Also once he and McCormack (one of top 3 face-off guys in section) collapsed I think rye won the majority of face-offs. Not sure who faces off for Town but think Town can look at rye game and have some optimisim.
If JJ plays as a team and Granelli continues to be a beast on faceoffs, there isn't a team in the section that stands a chance. After watching the last two games it is obvious why JJ started the season with a national ranking.
Their ball passing and team work is amazing when the Division 1 players forget to be heros and run the plays.
LaxFan,
I dont have a favorite and hope both teams play well and win state championships.
Appreciate your enthusiasm for JJ. They can play like a really elite team.
The question is the "If" in your first sentence and the "when" in your last sentence.
LaxFan, just a question (No sarcasm)- do you feel that they did not play as a team against Rye? & that Rye's FO man was a good match-up to Granelli?
LaxFan
Offense has not been JJ's problem. Hell, look at all the posts from Rye fans congratulating themselves for "shutting down" Jay by holding them to 8 goals.
If Rye made a habit of "holding" teams to 8 goals this year, they'd have 7 losses already.
Corning East and South Hadley both "held" Jay to 8 goals last year and lost.
The vulnerability for Jay is their defense. Only Manhasset and Huntington scored 8 goals in the regular season against Jay last year. This year 5 teams have done it already (including Rye, whom 7 others teams managed to "hold' to less than
and it seems unreasonable to expect Town won't be number 6.
Maybe the defense has come around in last two games. Maybe the offense is respecting each possession more, not assuming that their defense will always get them the ball back.
Maybe not.
Don't see Town's score in single digits. Don't see Jay's score in single digits.
I'll bet the over.
McCormack's a good tough kid, but did not 'win' too many FOs – more so tied up Granelli and waited for help.
I think Town wins due to more Offensive weapons than JJ this year especially Froats finding more of the back of the net recently. JJ can, at times, be a two-headed monster with Bocklet and Drew and everyone needing for them to break down their man to get looks. Motion helps, but if D contains (not stops) those two (as Nisky must have and Rye did), the O will be slowed down. If Drew's left hand was stronger, he would have scored 4 or 5 against Rye. He can flat out fly.
Enjoy the game, should be a fun event.
Old Timer,
You are 100 percent spot on with your assessment of this. Jay's D will decide this game. That's not to say Yorktown's D is great. It's got a lot of good parts, but really only one true star.
The 8 goals reference you made is exactly what I'm thinking about. I, too, expect Yorktown and Jay to "take the over." I just have no clue yet as to who will have more.
There's more of a chance the game will be moved to the Rose Bowl and put on ESPN than I have of attending on Friday night. I envy all of you.
I was just beginning to worry that "ric b" was off of the blogs…welcome home 47! Hey, I could use a little help w my defense…
Syracuse, we know you'll be there in spirit! would you have been able to come if it were still Saturday? (can't remember if you've mentioned it already)
Syracuse,
Cant believe you cant make the game!! Sincerely that is a REAL pity.
joe and town fans,
i heard ranagan is taking the faceoffs for town. isnt he a lefty? granelli is a monster on FOs. it'll be a huge part of the game, as it always is!
too bad that the mamaroneck game is the senior night for y-town.
If the jj game was their senior night then they would've came our firing and ready to topple jj. But y-town will HAVE to sit their starters for most of the night against mamk. if they want to be fresh for the big game the next day
Laxviewer – Just so I understand. You're concerned that the Town 2nd string will only beat Mam'k by an embarassing amount, not a truly mortifying amount like the starters would if they could play the whole game. Glad to see that you really have your head around the JJ contest. Hope your players are a little more focused then you are.
laxwatcher—That's not what he's saying at all. He's saying Town needs to rest their players for Friday's game, period. why are you starting trouble? Or are you totally missing his point?
Given these two teams Jeckyl and Hyde act this year, I'm just glad you can't bet on high school lacrosse games. I'm just hoping that these two teams bring their "A" game, and if they do, this will be another great game in this series. If it's the Corning East version of John Jay vs. the Chaminde/ St.A's version of Town. I think Town wins a close one in the low teens. If it's the Comsewogue version of John Jay, I think Jay wins by 2 or 3 goals, I haven't seen a team click like that in a long time.
But since I have no idea which version of each team shows up, given the potential offensive firepower of these two teams, I think the goalies decide it, and I give the edge to Town, they jump out early, weather a Jay comeback in the second half, and come away with a 13-11 win.
Syracuse – I didn't miss his point. He wanted to play JJ on Town's Sr night for the extra Psych factor. Thats a legit point. Believe me, playing Mam'k the night before JJ will not have any sort of negative impact on Town. He just seemed disappointed that Town was going to have to rest their starters against Mam'k. Why? Does Town have to beat the Tigers by 20+ to settle any discussion over which program is better. I am pretty sure that question has been answered.
LoveTownLax –
Actually, I dont think they played as a team. When JJ Passes the ball and runs the plays, even the best D has trouble finding it. Before you know it the ball is in the goal. At the Rye-JJ game there was passing but there were also a lot of missed opportunities by individuals taking the ball to the net and not using their team mates to finish the play.
That being said, I mean no disrespect to either team. Rye showed true championship ability by taking advantage of JJs mistakes. The best team on that day… did win.
Small consolation for those who can't be there, but this is the MSG Game of the Week, so it will be on MSG 9:00 Sunday morning (and throughout the week).
laxwatcher-
you are actually wrong and syracuse was right on the money with what i was trying to say. Im not disappointed that they have to sit their starters, in fact i was promoting the idea. I was trying to say that they dont need to beat mamk by 20 and that they can win easily while being ready the next night.
ok LaxFan, thanks. exciting game to watch, I'm sure.
why isnt jay playing pac thursday as scheduled?
Well, I've put this off for as long as I could.
I've crunched all the numbers, called The Weather Channel and even flipped a coin (more than once), but I think I finally have my prediction.
Basically, I backed myself into a corner a while back by saying "Yorktown by 4." I added the little "right now" post script to that, but I gotta stick by it.
Like Joe stated, this game boils down to one major issue—possession. The Granelli vs. Ranagan matchup on faceoffs is huge. Both offenses thrive on the break, but both also are quite adept 6-on-6.
To me, this could be a wash.
That leaves, in my eyes, team defense as the overriding factor from an on the field perspective. We know both goalies will play out of their minds. What the poles and d-middies do will go a long way toward deciding it.
Right now, I think Yorktown is slightly better defensively, but you need a high-powered microscope to tell the difference.
What the numbers and matchups won't tell you is this:
Yorktown never had to deal with another team having a prolonged psychological edge in the all-time history until Jay's run of brilliance over the last five years. I know. I know. What about Ward Melville? Well, all I can say about that is it is impossible to prepare for the Patriots when you see them but once a year live, and that's on the day you play them. Yorktown often has little to no time to prepare for a team of Melville's stature.
On the other hand, they know exactly what Jay is packing. They just haven't been as good lately.
This year, they are.
I see Yorktown taking all the built-up angst from its 4-game losing streak to Jay and channeling it into the performance of the season.
Yorktown's attack will win this game. Bocklet will get his points, but Interlicchio & Co. will be too much for Jay's poles to handle.
Yorktown, 13-9.
That said, I'm going into hiding …
Jay / pac game moved to next Wednesday the 21st. Instead of playing back-to-back games.
thats weak, play the game tonight
I think both defenses and both goalies are very good and match up against one another nicely…midfield also pretty similiar…attack has to go to Town…Bocklet will def put up some numbers but I dont see JJ poles locking down Interlicchio from behind…Look for a big day out of Kurpis finishing on the crease from #22
Only way Yorktown wins is if Syracuse suits up… Too bad he suffers from severe carpal tunnel from many many blog posts. He was the Green Machine's only hope.
JJ 11
Corntown 9
JJ Wins 11-10. Bocklet game winner in 2 O.T.
That ridiculous that the jj/pac game got moved to wednesday. The sectional seeding meeting is supposed to be tuesday…play the game tonight and dont hold sectionals up
section1 – It won't hold up sectionals. The seeding meeting is still Tuesday. The JJ-Mahopac game should not have a bearing on the seeds. If it does, I'm told it will be moved to Tuesday afternoon.
gosec1green- I agree with all your points except for one. You said you would have to give the attack edge to Town, but i have to disagree. JJ has two D1 players, Bocklet and Granelli, and Jones who is having a breakout year. Town's is very good with Interlicchio and Kurpis but i think they are lacking a third with a young sophomore in Lieberman. Head to head i would give the advantage to JJs attack.
JJ-12
Town-11
Laxxer I agree. I don't see how Town has the attack edge when 3 of JJ's best players are on attack – Bocklet (of course), Granelli, and Jones (the 2nd leading scorer on the team.)They're still the best starting attack line in the section no question imo.
O alright….thanks Joe
you play to win the game, disrespectful to pac
good point, xlax
xlax i don't realy get what your saying. What does it matter if JJ plays the thurs or next wed…they are gonna beat them by at least 7 goals anyway
Pac – JJ will not matter at all to seeding. JJ is #1 in "B", and Pac will be #3 in "A" because of their inclusion in Power league. #4 is Suffern (because they beat Scarsdale), #5 is Greeley (cause they lost to Scarsdale) #6 is North Rockland, #7 is Clarskstown South, #8 is Mamk, #9 is Scarsdale. It ain't rocket science when you know the power league and the "A" league schools.
7
didn't NR beat Suffern, i don't know if they played greeley but that messes up your little seeding.
Except Suffern is power league, as is greeley, and North Rockland isn't. That automatically gets them seeded ahead of NR, regardless of who won the head-to-head
really??? what was suffern greeley and NR ranked. It is really crazy how some teams can get a huge seeding advantage by ranking themselves a certain way (which is easy to do) and others (who can't compete for sections) can rank themselves lower b/c:
1- section seeding isn't a issue- 1 and out or an outbracket and out
2- it is way easier to go %40 in C than %30 in B or %20 in A
3- record equates to success in those communities regardless of who you play
I still believe in the system section 1 has but it can really be played with.
Pville is in A and Bcliff is in B. Community rivals talking trash all year on the blog and their game means nothing for seeding? Nobody overlooked anybody.
NR V Suffern maybe the biggest game both teams had this year. I don't think these issues will be addresed at seeding. Criteria is criteria and can't be manipulated even though common sense would say differently.
pink eye – apparently your pink eye is blurry – KI – AWESOME!
laxer 1010 – debate – silly, playing the game – priceless…..(& Granelli was great)
ground chuck – didn't happen..
Wood Shaft – do you think it WAS Syracuse who made the difference?
laxxer33, LAX – et al. – 'Town attack – no lack – "young Lieberman" – wow!
Goo & Syracuse – awful close!
