Iona Prep leads Fordham 3-1 after one quarter.
Iona is well on its way to a second straight CHSAA tournament title. The Gaels led Fordham 7-2 at the half. Nick Trizano, who leads the LoHud region in goals, assists and points, has 3-1.
How do the playoffs for 1-C-1 breakdown Joe? Eastchester beat Croton today 7-1 to move into 4th at 2-2 in the divison. According to maxpreps they have 3 games left against division opponents in Roosevelt, Clarkstown and Pearl River with an out of division game against Wappingers. What do you think their chances of making it are? Nice to see a local team moving up.
Nick Trizano of Iona Prep doesn't only lead the section in goals, assists, and points, he leads the state, and this kid is only a junior, as with Gillespie, who's 3rd in the state in goals and points. Granelli's second in assists with one behind Trizano but of course Iona Prep has played more games than JJ.
You should also take a look at some of the teams they play…. not to knock them, they have played well and beaten some quality teams, but the CHSAA isn't exactly a powerhouse, and running up the score on those teams is pretty lame.
Iona did indeed win 17-6. Jeff will be back with more in a bit. Trizano had 5-3.
WCLax – At 5-8 Eastchester is just below the .400 winning percentage Division C teams need to qualify for sectionals. With the games remaining, I think there is a good chance the Eagles could finish 7-10, which translates to a .412 percentage.
all of the Iona kids stats are so inflated…They beat teams that clearly arent on there level and do not pull their starters…Beating teams by 20 goals does not prove anything, its one thing if your 3rd line is playing and winning, but Trizano, the coachs son, stays in and racks up his points…comon
I didn't say that they were a powerhouse and everything, just Trizano leading the whole nation in points is pretty impressive.
If you look at the box scores of those games that were blowouts for Iona, they are up by 20 at the half, and pull the starters after that. However, I don't disagree that the stats are a little inflated as referenced below:
Xavierian: 12pts
Fordham: 11pts
Mount: 10 pts
Stepinac: 10 pts
Hackley: 12pts
However, he did also have 6pts against both Kellenberg and Lakeland/Panas.
You are right though, Iona racks up stats like crazy against sub-par teams, they're second in the nation in team goals, and 1st by a mile in assists (JJ is 10th and 9th).
Irvington beat Albertus today 11-4 i believe. Good defense as usual from the bulldogs. The starting goalie from Magnus got hurt early so a middie stepped in cage for them for the last 3 quarters.
Most of those Iona routs of 20+ goals are accomplished by halftime, when Trizano and the other starters are normally pulled. However I don't disagree that Trizano racks up the points against bad teams, as referenced below.
Xavierian:12 pts
Hackley:12 pts
Fordham:11 pts
Mount:10 pts
Stepinac: 10 pts
However, he did have 6 pts in games against Kellenberg and Lakeland/Panas. He has skills, he just happens to be the finisher in a lot of the Gaels' offense
Here are some scores and highlights:
Eastchester 7, Croton-Harmon 1: Billy Addesso had a hat trick and Dave Massi added two goals and two assists.
Ardsley 8, North Salem 4: David Schuman scored three goals for the Panthers. Timothy Curran, Sean Aurigemma, Billly Wood and Ralph Coppola each scored for the Tigers.
Edgemont 10, Pearl River 2: Josh Eidelberg scored five goals. Zack Freed had 17 saves for the Panthers.
Briarcliff 14, Tappan Zee 3: Eric Brandel had five goals and four assists and Mike Perlow had four goals.
Irvington 11, Albertus Magnus 4: Dan Malone had three goals and one assist. Dan Glantz had 12 saves. Chris Patrick had three goals for the Falcons.
Clarkstown North's Nick Camadeco broke Pat Pocalyko’s single-season goal-scoring record in today's 11-5 win over Roosevelt. He had 3-3 and completed his hat trick with his 49th goal, eclipsing Pocalyko, who had 48 in 1997.
Nanuet 10, Hastings 7. You called it, Joe! I'm going to have you pick my lottery numbers from now on…
Thanks, knightsmom. I get lucky every now and then.
Question: What did Trizano do against good teams? What did he do collectively against Chaminade, L/P, Somers and Rye. I mean, before we annoint him as the greatest player in the section we should look at what he's done against teams that can actually scoop ground ball and chew gum at the same time.
Joe-
I think you said you had to win 40% of your games to make the sectionals. Does that mean Pville is out?
well syracuse
vs. chiminade he had 3 pts
vs. L/P he had 6pts
vs. somers he had 3pts
vs. rye he had 2pts
vs. kellenberg he had 6pts
so now you can see what hes done vs teams that can scoop the ball and chew gum and make your own opinions on a kid who consistintly sees the opponets top defender. i don't think anyone is saying he is the greatest player in the section. i think whateveryone else is trying to say is that he is a very good player and one of the top players in the area but noone said hes the best in the section.
In the first night game played at White Plains' Parker Stadium, Harrison upset the host Tigers to end White Plains' six-game win streak. Matt Foristel and Ben Kurzius each had two goals for the Huskies.
gillepsie is a much better player than trizano not that trizano is bad he is decent, but gillespie is a player to watch
Paul C-
By virtue of being in the A division pville will make sectionals ragardless of their record.
I think P'ville is automatically in, because they are in the powerleague.
All Division A teams qualify for sectionals regardless of record.
In Division B, teams must have a winning percentage of 30 percent.
In Division C, it's 40 percent.
According to the seeding rules, the nine "power league" teams draw higher seeds than any non-power league teams regardless of record. You will recall last year, Mahopac got a No. 4 seed in Class A despite finishing the regular season 4-13 because it was in the power league — a scenario that created quite a bit of discussion right here.
There is a stipulation that the members of the seeding committee may, at their discretion, decide not follow that criteria.
That means Pville is out. THere wining % will be below 40%. Clearly the biggest disappointment of the year.
Casual Observer,
I'm not downplaying the kid, but we both know the CHSAA city league is for the most part pretty weak. I could go out there and put up some numbers. I honestly didn't know his numbers against the good teams. Hence why I asked.
? – that is not true. iona does pull there starters, and trizano does not stay in he stays in for the first half
Paul….
As i quote Joe,
"All Division A teams qualify for sectionals regardless of record."
Pville does fall into this category
I guess we will see with Empires how good Trizano is – did he make the team last year? – they sure needed some help from the X to take some pressure off Marasco.
He's definitely not the best player in the section, but I don't see why he can't get some attention without being bashed on, I mean if someone leads the nation in points he's got to be good. They dominate teams and don't play a tough schedule and have played more games than regular section 1 teams so far, but that doesn't mean Trizano and his team shouldn't get any credit. They beat Lakeland and Somers and lost by one to Rye so they deserve credit, and they're a team led by juniors.
Trizano has more points than bocklett…lets be honest who is the better player there? If he was on any team in section 1 he wouldnt have nearly as many points. His dad lets him rack up points when they play worse teams. If Iona played all section one teams and maybe even a long island team he would get beaten up every game, maybe slowing his point scoreing. Myles Gillespie is the man and a nasty lax player. He is the best player on Iona. Good luck with college kid. I bet Trizano doesnt even go to a great school for lax, even with all the points he has leading the state
Joe-
What do you think could happen now in League B-1 now that there are essentially three teams in the running for the title,
Harrison (3-0) in leagues
Ardsley (3-1) and
White Plains (3-1)
Also….what happens in case of a tie in league record? With three relatively even matched teams that could easily be the case.
section 1 – Very interesting in League B-1. I believe that if there's a tie in league standings, the first tiebreaker is combined won-loss record of opponents. The second is head-to-head. But we are checking to confirm that.
syracuse, then i apologize for my hostility.
LAX, you bring up a great point. looking on max preps and watching the Gaels play a few times you see that the team has a bunch of juniors contributing: (these names are from max preps so i don’t know how accurate they are)
of course trizano and gullispe. they also have there 3rd and 4th leading scores who are jrs(o'hagen and guido). there 6th 7th and 8th scorers are all underclassman(s. trizano.soph, brendan gorgan. JR, and pete Desalvo. soph). there D is young as well. two starting poles are under classman (chris jackson. JR, and brian fahy. soph) with a third soph pole seeing significant time(george apostolopoulos). and one of their D-middies is a jr as well (tom jardine). that’s 11 players all seeing significant time now that will be coming back next year. it should be fun. this will be great for both the area and the CHSAA.
Amen brother.
with all the comparison of trizano and gillespie to bocklet, id like to point out that BOTH iona and john jay lost by one to a solid rye team, granted john jay lost in ot, but still with the schedule iona had they showed that they can hold there own with section 1's best and they deserve the credit
At this point Iona needs to show they can do this over the long haul. They need to go 18-3 every year going forward to be looked at as more than a one-hit wonder. I do like their scheduling approach, though. They need to keep playing Chaminade, and get St. Anthony's on the horn.
Iona is not better than JJ (at least not this year) but they deserve to be in the Fab Five. They did lose to Rye by as much as JJ (though not in OT), and they did beat L/P by one goal, as did Yorktown, and also beat Somers by two. JJ beat Somers by 10 and L/P by 6 though. And yes both Trizano and Iona as a team have the most points in the nation, Gillespie being 3rd. Nick has more goals than Bocklet and more assists than Granelli but he's played 6 more games and dominates weaker teams. It's really tough to compare Iona and JJ because they play a much different schedule. Look out for JJ's Granelli btw if he keeps it up he'll end up probably second in the nation in assists.
Guys, we can't start comparing John Jay and Iona Prep. I'm sorry. Not yet. That's not to say we won't some day.
If you really want to make some sort of comparison, JJ did scrimmage Iona before the season started. I know it was the beginning of the year and both teams were just testing things out, who their better players are etc., but JJ still did handle them very easily. Trizano is a very good player but does tend to rack up his stats, so he's not nearly as good as the stats show him to be. But none the less, Iona is still a good team, having a great season.
I saw the Iona – Jay scrimage. Laxxer is correct in that Jay handled them very easily. However, Trizano played well and Iona is a very good Team.
But I agree If Jay played the same schedule that Iona has, Bocklet and Granelli would have more goals & assists the
the Iona kids.
More goals and assists is an understatement. They would have 10x more than the IP players have now. You have to remember that these JJ kids are some of the TOP players in the nation. I am in no way affiliated with Jay, but there is no question that these are special players, and not to mention that the (large amount or) points they put up are against a number of out of section teams that are regarded as some of the best in the country.
I got to say, it is interesting how a week ago half the posts were about JJ being on another level than everyone else in section 1. If anyone had ever tried to say anything comparing JJ and Iona they would have been laughed out of here.
John Jay is a much better team than IP. Furthermore, Trizano and Gillespe are fine players but they are nothing special. They are products of the CHSAA.
Joe,
what do you think the seedings will be for the Class B sectional tournament? Class C?
Let's not forget what IP is giving us – another reason to discuss lax South of 287 – something that rarely happened before. As far as individual stats – who cares – that is apples and oranges stuff. The ESGs will allow these players to step up and shine (or not) against some of the best comp in the country.
IP will attract better players and toughen the schedule particularly against Fairfield County CT which has some strong private school Lax programs. With Rye and IP making statements, where is the Mamaroneck program these days?
Tough words for the Mamaroneck program. The major problem I think IP will have is the same problem that St. Anthony's and Chaminade has, which is that they don't play for a "state" championship. But, then again, those programs are doing ok (sarcasm).
well class B, this year there will be a catholic state championship game. in the alumni media guide schedule there is a game titled CHSAA state championship(on may 28th if i remember correctly.)im assuming its the winner of the city CHSAA and the LI CHSAA because the two leauges are associated in other sports.
that will be great for IP. its still not a real "state" championship in the sense of the public schools, but still a good thing for them to play for.
In my previous comment I meant to say Gillespie has the 3rd most points in the state, but Trizano is 1st in the nation, just clearing that up. That doesn't mean they're great players, though, this Iona team just racks up stats like crazy, but they are still very good. Congratulations to IP btw.
Sound Shore – As I stated a couple of days ago, Mamk lost 10 sr's from last year who had played together since youth lax in 5th grade. Just too big a group to replace. Their JV is something like 8 and 3 with a very solid defense, which is unique for the tigers. They will be back as a respectable team in the next year or 2.
