The John Jay-Yorktown preview podcast

May
12

OK, Harold, Jeff and I did talk about other things.

Really.

But we did spend a good amount of time previewing “The Game” on Friday. Harold and Jeff gave their picks — and so too did a new addition to the podcast, Alex Myers, who serves as our golf beat writer. As for me, I’m still thinking about it before my big announcement on Wednesday.

We also talk about North Rockland’s quest to go unbeaten against Rockland County teams for the second straight year (and its big game coming up vs. Clarkstown South); Rye’s big win over John Jay; surging Briarcliff and lots more.

Jeff was pretty lively. I think he had too many chocolate bars or something before we started.

Well, there went 16 minutes, 30 seconds of my life I'll never get back …

  2. Joe Lombardi

Cuse – What do you think about the 3-0 on the picks? Even J-Gold!

  3. Syracuse

First off, you guys do a great job with the podcast. It's lively. It's upbeat. I dig it. I'm sure everyone else loves it and appreciates what you guys do. It's nice that local sports, high school sports, get this kind of love because growing up people my age were lucky to see their name mispelled in agate, let alone have Chris Bocklet and his agent on hand for a live interview.

Getting down to the business at hand, I was a bit surprised no one picked Yorktown. I'm sure as hell picking Yorktown. 1-0 in OT. Lieberman scores the winner. There ya go.

Here's what I think, and it may sound painfully obvious, but I think this is how Yorktown wins this game. Jay runs everything through Bocklet, especially in settled situations. If Town can simply limit him, as in keep him from going 3 and 3, Town will win this game. I'm even suggesting shutting him off, face-guarding him, whatever … Yorktown has defensive players than will do a better job denying him the ball than taking it away. I'm not sold the Jay D can keep the Yorktown offense in check for 48 minutes, so if Yorktown takes away or simply slows down Bocklet for stretches (I know this guy is the best player in the section, so simply slowing him down is all you can really expect to do. He's gonna get his points. No two ways about it), the Town offense should be able to do what it needs to do.

I saw Latino the other night and thought he was the best goalie I'd seen this year. Mike Bontatibus is very good, too, but I think Latino might be just a bit better. The pressure on these two guys will be immense.

Having said all that, I believe the onus is on Yorktown to go out and win this game, because anything less than a complete effort from every Husker that sees the field will not be enough to beat a Jay team, which at least on Saturday, looked like the best team I'd seen in years.

Maybe it was a combination of "JayFest" meets "ridiculously overrated Comeswogue" that led to such a performance, but I'm doubting it.

Actually, I think it was that band that delayed the start of the third quarter that revved Jay up. They were pretty solid.

I'm sure I'm going to take some hits for some of these comments, so fire away ….

If John Jay beats Yorktown, is their any chance that we can see a three way tie in the Fab Five between JJ, Town, and Rye? I doubt everyone's love for JJ and Town on these blogs would ever permit it, but it would be fair…

  5. Joe Lombardi

'Cuse – Glad you liked the podcast. It was definitely our most lively one yet. I think for the first time we really saw the real Jeff Gold. Like I said, it may have been the chocolate bars. Who knows.
I was also surprised everyone went with JJ, as you could probably tell. It is definitely food for thought for me as I mull over what way I'm going to go. I honestly don't know right now.

  6. Joe Lombardi

cookie-crunch – Funny you should ask that. I'm actually working on the brand-new Fab Five and there are a few spots that could have been ties. But I'm not going to do it. My feeling is, if you have rankings like this, what's the point of ties?

  7. Syracuse

I don't know about that JGold. He reminds me a little of the Irishman from "Braveheart." A little off … if you know what I mean.

  8. Joe Lombardi

I got a good laugh when I read that 'Cuse and asked Jeff his thoughts to the "Braveheart" reference.
    His response?
    "I didn’t see the movie."

  9. cookie-crunch

I think ties were invented to show equal ability… but I get your point. Unfortunately, I'm gonna guess that you'll still have Rye behind JJ and Town… the only problem with that is that Rye is now closer to JJ and Town then they were this time last week; without ties, there is no way to show that improvement. See what I mean?

  10. Syracuse

Dear God … C'mon JGold. The guy doesn't see "Braveheart," but I'll bet you any amount he's seen "The Simpson's Movie" 20 times.

  11. Joe Lombardi

cookie-crunch – Absolutely I see your point. But again, I don't think any two teams can be equal. Someone has to have an edge — albeit miniscule in some cases. I am finishing up "The Fab Five" and you folks can tell me what you think. I have a pretty thick skin so don't hold back.

  12. Joe Lombardi

'Cuse – Haha. Jeff also is a big "Stuart Little" fan I hear.
But really – he's never seen "Braveheart"? How does that happen?

  13. Syracuse

I will not pretend to know the mind of JGold, but it's been my experience that people who have never seen "Braveheart" probably were in the chess club, played "Dungeons and Dragons" at some point in their life and dabbled in amateur rocketry.

  14. Joe Lombardi

Actually, that's not quite right here. It should be noted that though he's a latecomer to lax, J-Gold was a tennis and soccer standout in his HS days.

  15. Syracuse

Why do I think JGold's high school days were fairly recently? It's all good. He's a pretty good writer. I expect a check in the mail for all the editing I do for him, though.

  16. Rye betta than u

Joe don't ever use the Term "The Game" unless your reffering to the historic rivalry of Rye VS Harrison.

  17. Joe Lombardi

Ha – I was waiting for someone to say that.

Put it this way – when it comes to Section 1 football, Rye-Harrison is "The Game."

    In Section 1 lax, it's JJ-Yorktown.

  18. Syracuse

So, just so we're all clear here:

    Harold: Jay 10-7
    Alex: Jay 12-8
    JGold: Jay 12-10

    Joe: Yorktown 20-4

  19. Joe Lombardi

Wow – I'm really the black sheep of this group. Haha.

For those who may be just tuning in, the above picks are correct except mine. I'm holding out till Wednesday. Just a need a couple extra days to make up my mind once and for all.

  20. laxxxin344

    Town-12 JJ-9

Towns defense comes up big on Bocklet while the Offense runs through Interlicchio who leads them again to a W…

  21. jgold

    Syracuse,

Sad to say that a year of solid blog posts might be going down the drain…you're putting your legend status in jeopardy.

Simpsons? No. Dungeons and Dragons? No. Amateur rocketry? No.
I'm not really sure what my actual interests are, but you're not even in the ballpark with those three guesses.

Recent HS grad? Maybe…depends on your definition. My diploma says 1999.

  22. playinlax2314

Question: Who is going to be able to contain Interlicchio from behind, Ranagan up top with Rocky and Froats??? I dont see JJ having that type of D talent….

    Town 13 JJ 8

  23. Syracuse

JGold … there's so much love between us. Don't let my off-color tomfoolery sour you on the power of 'Cuse. You're still the man.

  24. Slacrosse

    13-10 Town over JJ

  25. LoveTownLax

jgold, you're right, it is all relative, to me 1999 is recent, though! (sadly…)
