Friday night’s showdown between John Jay and Yorktown will mark the teams’ first regular-season meeting at Charlie Murphy Field since April 21, 2006, when John Jay pulled out an 11-7 win. (File photo by Dave Kennedy/The Journal News)

Well, well, well.

It’s finally here, gang.

The last full week of regular-season action.

And as teams scramble for positioning for the upcomings sectionals (the seeding meeting is next Tuesday), we have plenty of intriguing matchups.

But before we get to that, in case you missed it, Harold put together a nice story on sports moms that appears today — Mother’s Day, of course — in The Journal News and on LoHud.com. All three of the moms included have at least one son who plays varsity lax in the LoHud. Check it out. Here’s the link.

Now, to the picks.

As always, please be sure to ask about any games that interest you.

This week, we are going to do something a little bit different.

Instead of a “First three,” I’d like to start with a clean slate and go from there.

I hear there is a pretty big game Friday night I’m trying to get more information about — and I’ll be happy to talk about that one and any others that interest you.

    hey Joe
Thoughts on the Mahopac vs. Put Valley Game?

  2. laxguy

joe what are your thoughts on Lakeland-south game

  3. Lax

Joe do you see briarcliff losing a game this week they play ossining pelham and tappan zee and then what do you think will happen saterday when they visit chatham

  4. Lax

Joe what do you see briarcliff doing this week they have 4 games will they lose any of them pelham ossining tappan zee and then ending with saterday against chatham if they were to win out what seed would you give them

  5. Laxer

Putnam Valley has two big games this week. One vs. Mahopac and the other vs Rye
    Joe what are your thoughts

  6. knightsmom

Nanuet v Hastings? What do you think?

  7. Joe Lombardi

Little_O'G – 'Pac has won three of its last four with the lone loss to Rye. This should be a tight one, but I like the "Pac, say 8-6. Also btw – both teams recently played Byram. Mahopac won by a goal and PV lost by three goals.

laxguy – First off, I want to congratulate South on the big win over North. I did pick South but thought it would be a bit closer than it was and some folks told me I would be wrong and I was. As for L/P game, the Rebels have regained that swagger they had in the very early part of the season. Their fine play in the Murphy Cup has really revitalized this team. It then picked up a nice win over a Somers team that's been playing well of late and yesterday jumped out to an 8-0 lead in a big win over CBA.
    L/P 12, South 5

Lax – Pville may have gotten the Bears over the hump as far as winning out to end the regular season is concerned.
There's no reason they shouldn't beat both TZ and Ossining. As far as Chatham, I'm not too familiar.
Also, concerning your other question, I don't like to project seeds. It's definitely not an exact science. Others are welcome to though.

  8. lax3rrr

Hey Joe any thoughts on Harrison and White Plains under the lights tomorrow?

  9. Joe Lombardi

knightsmom – First off, Happy Mother's Day!
Nanuet has won six of its last seven and is really on a roll. At 9-4, Hastings is also having a strong season.
I like Nanuet to pull out a 10-7 win.

  10. Freedom Writer

Joe, what is your prediction for NS vs Ardsley tomarrow?

  11. allLax

Nice Mother's Day piece! U go Lori B. Keep feeding those Yorktown boys!

  12. knightsmom

Thanks Joe – I hope you're right about the Nanuet/Hastings game tomorrow – the boys have been working hard to get ready for this one!

  13. Joe Lombardi

lax3rrr – The Tigers (10-4) are playing too well (six-game win streak to be precise) to go against them.
    WP 10, Harrison 5

FW – After a slow start, Ardsley has bounced back to win five of itrs last seven, but North Salem has been consistent all season long.
    North Salem 8, Ardsley 5

  14. stevo

Town vs Jay is a contrast in styles among other things….Jay loves to run its mumbo sets and runs play after play…while Town runs its motion offense and lets its players create more on their own….How do we see this playing out…coaching is huge in a game like this so thoughts Joe

  15. Joe Lombardi

stevo – Though, as I said in the video, I think it likely will wind up being a one-goal game, I think the early part of the game will be big. Yorktown seems to have its best games when it gets an early spark. Against Wilton, its second goal was initially waved off after the 'Huskers were called for too many men on the field. But after converging, the officials then decided to count the goal after all. It was the start of a 6-0 Yorktown run. Had that second goal not counted, how would Yorktown have reacted? I have noticed if the 'Huskers get confidence early in a game, they feed off it.
In addition to faceoffs and ground balls being key factors (as is always the case in these type of games), so too will goaltending.
And it's an interesting matchup featuring the two goalies on last year's ESG team — Michael Bonitatibus and Chris Latino.

  16. lax

How is the seating at CMF? Will there be a big crowd? I plan on going to this one Friday night.

  17. L@X

    Joe
any prediction on the Rye-Suffern Game?

  18. Joe Lombardi

lax – Depending on the weather, the crowd could easily be 3,000 or more. If that's the case, there will be a lot of folks standing as has been the case in years past.

L@X – Suffern's offense has had its struggles and Rye's defense has been dominant.
    Rye 11, Suffern 2

  19. IrvMan

    Joe,
What are your thoughts on Irvington vs Hastings this Wednesday?

And do you have any thoughts on the upcoming Ardsley tournament this weekend?

  20. sec1fan

    Joe,

What do you take on the Northrockland-south game coming up thursday. This will decide alot for the county.
Can haggerty and his defence slow down what has been a very good season for the NR offence or will they let loose.

  21. LoveTownLax

I second that motion, allLax! – there's "none better" than Lori B!

  22. Joe Lombardi

IrvMan – Hastings-Irvington has the potential to grow into a big rivalry game in years to come.
    Hastings 11, Irvington 6

Ardsley tournament has a nice field with Edgemont, Hastings, Irvington and the host Panthers.
I would say Edgemont would be the favorite to win it all.

  23. Joe Lombardi

sec1fan – North Rockland/South should be a real good one. Last year, it was a 10-8 game with the Red Raiders pulling it out.
I wouldn't be surprised if we see the exact same score this year. NR does have a bit more depth than South.
    NR 9, South 6

  24. 16 Fan

watch out for 16 of byram against jj this tuesday…he should be able to control the field and do what he does best—> score

  25. IrvMan

    Joe,
I respect your pick, but do you remember that Irvington beat Hastings 10-3 in the Hastings tournament?

  26. Joe Lombardi

IrvMan – Good point. That did slip my mind. I remember being impressed by that — and it wasn't too longer ago either.

  27. Scout42

    Joe –

I know that it's a bit out there…but any prediction as to how byram will do against john jay this week?

  28. Syracuse

Joe, if I'm you … I hold off on any Jay-Town prediction until around 6:59 p.m. on Friday.

  29. laxer1010

    Joe,

how about suffern vs byram this week? any predictions?

  30. Syracuse

Here's one for you, and I ask everyone for their $.02 because I'm all out of ideas:

How do you walk into your boss' office on a Monday and ask for a Friday off, knowing full well you need the day for no other reason than to see the game of the milennium in Section I lacrosse?

This should be this week's poll on the Lax to the Max homepage.

    Do you:

    1. Tell him there was a death in the family?
    2. Tell him your house burned down?
    3. Call in sick.
    4. Pray your office gets hit by a meteor.
    5. Just not show up and hope he doesn't notice.
    6. Pay someone like Slacrosse to wear a fake nose and glasses to take your place.
    7. Slip JGold a C note to write you a doctor's note.
    8. Ask Joe to pretend he's your dad and have him call and say you've been in a terrible accident.
    9. Offer to work on a Saturday (done it many times but now think its beneath me)
    10. Count on the beauty of technology, as in cell phones and text messaging, get no work done at all between 7 and 9:45 p.m. (and then maybe none for the rest of the night depending on the outcome) and then TiVo the crap out of MSG.

    I'm all ears fellas.

  31. L@X

when do the season awards come out ie. All American, All league, All section?

  32. Joe Lombardi

Cuse – I like your list, but a couple of things.
    1. I think Jeff is more of a fatherly figure than me.
    2. Since the game is at 7, I would imagine most folks would have no trouble getting there after work.

    L@X – The all-section/AA meeting is June 3

  33. Syracuse

Joe, unfortunately I'm not most folks. I guess I'll be counting on my source.

  34. Joe Lombardi

Same here, however, I think Friday at 7 is probably more convenient for most folks than Saturday at 1. I would almost guarantee the crowd will be bigger Friday than it would have been on Saturday.

But don't fret. Like you said, the game is on MSG. (It will be shown Sunday.) Also, we will have live scoring updates here on Lax to the Max.

  35. Joe Lombardi

Also – just a head's up. Thursday nite at 6:30 on RNN, we will preview the JJ-Yorktown game on "Varsity Central Extra."
You can watch it at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 19 or 6 in Westchester and Rockland (depending on your cable system), Channel 20 in Putnam and Channel 62 on DirecTV. Be sure to check it out and participate in our phone-in segment by calling 1-888-RNN-CHAT around 6:40.

  36. Syracuse

It's high time you guys break into the bigtime with DirecTV. Then again, DirecTV messes with a lot of people because you have to have their premium (highest) packaging in order to get ESPNU.

So it will be Joe and I on this board Friday night, while the rest of society as we know it will be at YHS for the showdown. The crickets will be deafening.

I'll bring the cold ones but you gotta spring for some of Buffalo's finest wings.

  37. Joe Lombardi

Cuse – I will be at YHS for the game — and I'll be doing the live scoring updates I talked about.

  38. Brewster

Can any of the NCAA Tournament games be seen anywhere besides ESPNU. Does anyone know of a public place where it is available?

  39. lax13

    Joe

Must give the bloggers credit. Just went on maxpreps. Your article on best underclassman at beginning of season. A lot of bloggers mentioned Interlicchio from Town and Brandofino from Pac. Both are up there with over 30 goals each. Both should be all section. The bloggers are really knowledgeable. Both kids fulfilled predictions.Good job guys

  40. LoveTownLax

Brewster – some of the bars in Yorktown will have them on, I'm sure! Try A.J.'s, or Murphy's to start. Syracuse & Brewster – with Direct TV, you can add the college package just for the spring season, not too costly, and well worth it!

  41. InsideLacrosse

Syracuse – after watching Jay on Sat night, do you still think Town will win by 5?

If the Jay team that played Sat shows up, I think they win by 2 otherwise I think Town wins by 3…..

  42. lops3444

LAX13, I agree with you on that one….Particulary Interlicchio, Im pretty sure he is leading the team in points and is on track to set possibly set some records at Town before his career is over…

  43. lax rat

JAY WINS 13-10 mark my words

  44. LacrosseInsider

    Syracuse –

Disregard my post above, I see that you had previously responded under "Saturday's Games" I agree with everything you said…this will be a classic, you really need to call in sick, this is a must see live game!

  45. wooden stick

    Syracuse,

No brainer, you have to be there. call in sick thursday and friday so you throw them off.

  46. Brewster

LoveTownLax, thanks, we'll have to check out those bars – don't have DirecTV yet.

  47. Laxer

Joe what do you think about the Putnam Valley Vs. Rye

  48. Wasabi

    lops3444,
Your thoughts about Interlicchio possibly breaking records at Yorktown intrigued me. So I looked into Yorktown's record book and the numbers are mind boggling. Interlicchio's really good for a soph, but those Yorktown records are way, way, way out there.

    Career points:
    Tom Nelson – 393
    Tim Nelson – 392

    Career Goals:
    Paul Carcaterra – 178
    Roy Colsey – 177

    Career Assists:
Tim & Tom Nelson – tied at 255!!!

    Single Season Pts:
    Tim Nelson – 162

    Single Season Goals:
    Rob Betchley – 94

    Single Season Assists:
    Tom Nelson – 109

Some of those numbers are just absurd and won't be challenged by anyone in Section 1, ever. Good luck to Interlicchio, but I think those records are pretty safe for the time being. 255 assists, it'll never be touched.

  49. SI

    Wasabi,

did you get an average of assists per game over the course of their career for the 255 for Tim and Tom Nelson?

  50. Wasabi

Assuming they played in all of the games, which I can't confirm, Tim Nelson played in 84 games from 1978-1981 and Tom played in 71 games from 1981-1983. That means Tim averaged 4.67 pts/game (3.04 coming off assists). Tom averaged a ridiculous 5.54 pts/game (3.59 coming off assists).

..that was a lot of work for someone who doesn't even like Yorktown.

  51. Joe Lombardi

Wasabi – The numbers the Nelsons put up both in HS and college truly are amazing. Here's a question for Yorktown fans to ponder. Who do you think would be Yorktown's all-time leader in ground balls?

Laxer – Rye-Put Valley is also a heated, defensive-oriented game. In the past it's been pretty even too. Last year, I thought Rye was clearly the better team (I don't think anyone would disagree with that), yet the Tigers played the Garnets to a 6-3 game in the sectional final. This year, I think the talent gap is a bit wider. But if the Tigers get strong goaltender (as Hen Hud did in a triple-OT loss to Rye), who knows? But Rye is still a heavy favorite.
    Rye 11, Put Valley 4

  52. lops3444

Wasabi great research! I think Interlicchio already has over 100pts and he is not done with his sophomore year so I would think he would make some sort of a run at it…Those numbers those old timers put up are truly unbelievable though, wow!

  53. 12ROCK

Like i said before you never know on any given day …..

    New & improved right buzzzz

  54. Slacrosse

AASSUMING RYE CAN PUT TOGETHER 2 SOLID HALVES AS IN THE jAY GAME SEE THEM WINNING 15-5

  55. laxman

wow that nelson guy is a monster. He had more assists than most people have points in a season. I think those numbers are safe

  56. zob

Rye will never truly blow another team out by more then 10 becuase the Dooleys are very quick to sub in thier nonstarters. This isn't bad, infact its good that they are gettin other players time just don't expect them to be running up the score.

  57. laxman

joe what do you think about greeley vs. pville

  58. Zack

    Rye will beat Suffern 15-1.

  59. laxwatcher

Doesn't Greeley have to play Mamk first, and can somebody tell me how did Greeley lose to Scarsdale.

  60. panther fan

Hey, any thoughts on Ardsley Vs Edgemont this weekend?

  61. Syracuse

Those Nelson brothers numbers came at a time when Yorktown beat everyone in the section by 15-20 goals per game. They played Manhasset and Melville during the season and usually got one or the other in the rematch at Hofstra in the state semis.

Dave Marr is also very high on the career Yorktown list. Don't have those numbers in front of me.

  62. LoveTownLax

Wasabi – why no like 'Town?

  63. Joe Lombardi

These links should help when looking at sectionals:

    • Power league team list

    • Class alignment

    • Divisional alignment

  64. Joe Lombardi

panther fan – First of all, are you an Edgemont Panther fan or Ardsley Panther fan? If it's the former instead of the latter, you will be happy to see this pick:
    Edgemont 9, Ardsley 6

  65. LAX

I think he just meant he's not a Yorktown fan LoveTownLax.

  66. Joe Lombardi

laxman – Sorry I overlooked your request for Greeley-Pville till now.
I like the Quakers, who played Brewster pretty tough, to take it. Let's say 8-5.

  67. LoveTownLax

LAX, just havin' fun with Wasabi! those records, and the players that hold them, just amazing! – and remember that the records held by P Carc and Roy Colsey were achieved in the early 90's, more competition at that time.

Syracuse – there must be SOMETHING you can do to "be there!"

  68. asdf fan

is there going to be another beautiful photographer at the mahopac game tomorrow

  69. IrvMan

Joe- Is there any reason to the Edgemont v. Ardsley pick?Edgemont has a good record but it looks like they played lower level teams.

  70. Vin D'Andraia

Someone needs to look into single season goals record for Ytown. I thought Paul Carc had in the high 90's.

  71. Joe Lombardi

Edgemont is jockeying for sectional seeding and has won six straight, including a nice win over Portledge from Long Island, which is certainly not a lower level team.
I do agree though that overall Ardsley's schedule is tougher. Ardsley is also playing well, having won four of its last five, including a big 8-4 win over North Salem in its last game.

  72. Syracuse

    Vin,

Almost positive Betchley's 94 is the Town record.

  73. Joe Lombardi

Vin and 'Cuse – Check this link.

  74. Vin D'Andraia

You are correct. Thanks 'Cuse and Joe

  75. Syracuse

Yeah, TomL put this together. It's pretty impressive.

  76. Irv-Son

Father Irvman, i believe you to be incorrect. Our team is terrible and we have not played anyone good. Edgemont is a lot better.
