Horace Greeley graduate Terence Higgins was among the goal scorers for Navy in an 8-7 win against fourth-seeded North Carolina in the opening round of the NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament yesterday.
Higgins, a senior midfielder, scooped up a ground ball before firing a shot home to give Navy a 7-4 lead with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter.
Navy will play the winner of today’s first-round game between Hofstra and No. 5 Johns Hopkins on Saturday in the quarterfinals at Navy.
Brothers Matthias and Tim McCall of Yorktown play for North Carolina.
In other first-round games:
Ohio State 15, Cornell 7: At Cornell in Ithaca, Ohio State goaltender Stefan Schroder scored the game’s first goal after going the length of the field, and the Buckeyes rolled from there. Rye’s T.J. Smith is a freshman defenseman for Ohio State. The Buckeyes will return to Ithaca next weekend to play Duke in the quarterfinals. Rye’s Tommy Schmicker is a junior midfielder for Cornell.
Maryland 10, Denver 7: At the University of Maryland in College Park, Md., the Terrapins improved to 10-3 all-time in NCAA first-round games and 40-28 overall in NCAA action. John Jay graduate Ryder Bohlander is a freshman defenseman for Maryland.
Duke 12, Loyola (Md.) 7: At Duke in Durham, N.C., senior Matt Danowski of the top-seeded Blue Devils had two goals and five assists to become the all-time leading scorer in NCAA history. He broke the record of 343 points set by Air Force’s Joe Vasta, a 1986 graduate. Collin Finnerty had three goals for Loyola. Finnerty joined the Greyhounds after transferring from Duke, where he was one of three players wrongfully charged with rape two years ago.
