Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

The Morning After

May

Though John Jay has had its struggles in the non-section portion of its season, the perception was still very much there.

The Indians remained at another level when it comes to teams in the Lower Hudson Valley, with the possible exception of Yorktown.

Nice job by staff photographer Frank Becerra capturing Rye’s Sam Fulmer, No. 15, scoring the winning goal in the second overtime in the Garnets’ 9-8 victory yesterday over John Jay, snapping the Indians’ 47-game win streak against Section 1 teams. (Photo by Frank Becerra Jr./The Journal News)

And so — over the last two seasons — losing to a Section 1 team didn’t even seem like a possibility.

Instead, it was an event when a Section 1 team wound up engaging in a competitive game against John Jay — as was the case last season when Lakeland/Panas fell to John Jay 9-6.

That marked the last time a Section 1 team lost by five goals or less against John Jay.

Until yesterday.

In case you missed it — and it’s hard to imagine how you could have — it was Rye 9, John Jay 8 on May 8, 2008. In double overtime.

The Garnets managed to do something no Section 1 team has done since April 12, 2005. Namely, beat John Jay.

As we have documented here the last few days, the last time it happened, Yorktown edged the Indians 10-9 in overtime.

Am I surprised by Rye’s win? Yes. Although the fact I picked John Jay to win 10-5 (allowing Rye to play John Jay within that five-goal mark I talked about), seemed to be a surprise to many.

Am I shocked? No.

How can I be — or anyone?

In case you haven’t noticed, the examples of parity in lacrosse are all around us. Every day.

It’s evident in college, where an upstart program with limited scholarships, Colgate, has beaten Syracuse two years in a row.

And where Duke is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA D-I tournament yet has never won a national title in its lacrosse history.

It’s certainly evident in Section 1 where Rye, which needed three overtimes to beat Hen Hud, beat a John Jay team with a 47-game winning streak against Section 1 teams that beat Hen Hud 18-6 earlier this season.

It was a watershed win that shows that Section 1 lax supremacy is no longer the private domain of one or two teams.

Welcome to the club, Rye.

This year's Rye lacrosse team is like "the little engine that could"...they just keep chugging away to conquer everything in their path. Nothing fancy, no "superstars". Games like that prove what the Dooley's already knew – that they have a very athletic, balanced, "team-oriented" group of atheletes, who, when they keep their heads in the game, can play with the best of them (didn't hurt that Rix was on his game again last night!!!)

    Joe,

what teams are playing today and what are your predictions? Is Hen Hud playing?

  3. Joe Lombardi

SI – Hen Hud is not playing today.
You can check this link for what's on for today.

  4. LAXER!

    Donald Keough shut down Bocklet.

  5. jo jo

I dont think 2 goals and 3 assists is shutting down bocklet.

  6. L@X

he didn't have a great game either. Bocklet scored both of his goals with 1-1s with the goalie. to me Drew was the best player on the field, not to take away from bocklet but drew is lightning quick he dosen't even need good stick skills, hes that quick. but he does have the stick skills. him and tyler will both be beast for Cuse' in the future.

    Jo Jo,

Keough of Rye is among the best defensemen in Sect 1 and did a pretty very good job vs Bocklet but AGREE with you that 2 goals 3 assists by Bocklet is not being "shut down". "Shut down" is much closer to what Pate of Manhassat did to Chris in their game. O goals and not sure if Chris got any assists?

  8. asdfhgadaa

Well one of chris's goals was on man up and the other was on a botched defensive play durring a cheap. Donald Keough did a graet job on Bocklet, every time he dodged Keough was all over him and causes 2-3 turnovers by checking Bocklet as he threw. As for bocklets 3 assists, none of them were rally Keoughs fault. I think that it was a good matchup but despite Bockets 5 points, in thier 1v1 matchups together Keough got the best of him. I see Keough on empires this season without a doubt.

  9. LAXER!

Bocklets 2 goals were scored when keough was not around him. One on man up and another on a cheap. As for the assists keough wasnt on him for 1 or 2 of them
