Should be an interesting day

May

In case you missed it, we posted a link to the latest state rankings yesterday.

Here it is.

You will notice that Briarcliff and Byram Hills are now both ranked in Class C.

Now, let’s move on because we have some good games today to get to.

Front and center, John Jay plays at Rye at 4:30 p.m. in a matchup of two three-time defending sectional champions.

John Jay enters the game with a 47-game win streak against Section 1 opponents. The last time the Indians lost to a sectional opponent was April 12, 2005 when they fell to Yorktown 10-9. You can access the box score to that game here.

Also today, former Yorktown star Roy Colsey coaches against his alma mater today as Horace Greeley hosts the ‘Huskers.

And don’t forget to tune in tonight at 6:30 on RNN for the latest edition of “Varsity Central Extra,” a half-hour show devoted to high school sports.

Be sure to check it out and participate in our phone-in segment by calling 1-888-RNN-CHAT at 6:40 p.m.

You can watch RNN on Channel 19 or 6 in Westchester and Rockland (depending on your cable system), Channel 20 in Putnam and Channel 62 on DirecTV.

  1. Syracuse

I hope the rain doesn't mess with today's action. Lots of good ones. I hope to have some updates for you all after 4:30 p.m. ...

  2. Freedom Writer

How bout the NS vs. New Rochelle game? predictions?

  3. NYLax10

Either Penn Yan has fallen a long way from what I remember, or those state rankings are absolutely ridiculous. Briarcliff is ranked two spots above Penn Yan????

  4. Joe Lombardi

John Jay leads Rye 3-1 with 6:25 left in the first quarter.

  5. Joe Lombardi

John Jay leads 4-3 after one quarter.

After Rye tied it at 3-3 on a goal by Rob Santangelo, Harrison Jones gave the Indians the lead right before the end of the quarter.

Billy LaPerch has two goals for JJ. Kevin Drew has 1-1.

Santangelo was Rye's third different goal scorer.

  6. hopkinslax

    town score yet

  7. Joe Lombardi

We have a good one at Rye, gang.

JJ leads 5-4 at the half.

Will Stewart snapped a 4-4 tie when he scored with 3:02 left in the second quarter off a feed from Chris Bocklet.

Rye had tied it at 4-4 on a goal by Sam Fulmer with 4:47 left in the period.

  8. Joe Lombardi

    Fasten your seatbelts, folks.

John Jay is clinging to a 6-5 lead as the fourth quarter starts.

The Indians snapped a 5-5 tie on a goal by Bocklet with 20 seconds left in the third quarter.

  9. Joe Lombardi

Rye leads 8-7 with four minutes to go. The Indians' 47-game win streak vs. Section 1 teams is very much in danger.

John Jay has possession and a man-up opportunity.

  10. Syracuse

    WOW! HOLY $%&*!

  11. Joe Lombardi

It's 8-8 with 2:39 remaining. Bocklet scored off a feed from Tyler Granelli a second after the man-up expired.

  12. Joe Lombardi

    It's 8-8 going into overtime.

  13. Joe Lombardi

    Still tied at 8-8.

Rye calls a timeout with 1:41 left in the first overtime and of course will have possession out of the timeout.

  14. Joe Lombardi

The first overtime ends with the score tied at 8-8.

  15. laxxxin3456

    12-5 town….

  16. NYLax10

    RYE WINS RYE WINS

  17. NYLax10

I gotta say, Jay is definitely on another level than the rest of section 1.

  18. Syracuse

Dear god! Someone send me a tape of this game!

  19. Joe Lombardi

Rye wins 9-8 on a goal by Sam Fulmer with three minutes left in the second OT.

John Jay's 47-game win streak vs. Section 1 teams is history.

We will be back with plenty more.

  20. LAX

Is this for real? Cmon JJ you've got to step it up, you beat Rye by 10 last season. Overconfident? What happened? Congratulations to Rye they're a great team but JJ is supposed to be in another league.

  21. Syracuse

Oh boy … unless you want to hear Slacrosse go off for the next 4 hours I suggest logging off right now.

  22. John

    Suffern Bosco score anyone?

  23. Rye betta than u

Holy moly WOW.. Best game i've seen since the 10-9 Yorktown OT Win against John Jay. WOW I guess John Jay is on another Level than Rye? Guess Not Rye won with terrible Refs.

  24. Scout42

HOLY MOLY!!!! talk about a close one…congrats to RYE!!!!

speaking of another GREAT game…I just got back from the Byram Mahopac game…Mahopac squeaked it out 12-11…this thursday was a day of close ones

  25. AWA

    The Refs, always the Refs
    Congrats to Rye,
Congrats to Brian Dooley Suny`s finest, Coach of the Year

  26. section 1

North Salem smacked New Rochelle 18-6, not very interesting, congratulations Rye

  27. LAX

Rye is still not better than JJ, JJ did better against every single mutual opponent. Rye 5-4 against hen hud and brewster, Jay 16-6 and 18-6 for example. Cut it out with that terrible ref garbage, the game was at Rye anyway. In my opinion it's a fluke, an upset. But it's one big upset, I'm more surprised than I was after JJ played nisky. Now you can't go around bragging and saying Rye is better than JJ when they won a game in overtime against a better team, show some sportsmanship. It's only one game, anything can happen, don't go around bragging and acting like it's the biggest thing that's ever happened.

  28. cuzIsaidso

lovin' lax at this time of year….guess Zach has a crystal ball! Way to keep the faith kiddo

  29. LAX

On another note, congratulations to Rye, and it was a big win for them. But it's the state tournament that counts and hopefully both JJ and Rye will go far, as well as Yorktown, assuming they all win of course.

  30. Jim

Lax- this is one of the biggest wins some of the kids on the team have ever had…your just pissed Jay lost. Those other scores dont matter. You cant look back…we beat them fair and square. Sick game Rye. SAM FULMER IS THE MANNNNN

  31. laxsauce

    lax-

"you're only as good as your last game"

you ever hear that before ? mstm

  32. Josh

Well John Jay did have a 47 game winning streak, and they were supposed to get blown out by 10 goals, John Jay was supposed to be on another level than Rye. They have all the reason to celebrate.

  33. RYE LAX BABY

Obviously next level means nothing. And they'll never be able to play this team again cuz their stars are gone. so keep talking all you want about how they are so much better. I forgot who won arleady. What was the score?????? Oh umm, i think 9-8. RYEEEEEE WINNNS

  34. Jim Teacher

    LAX-
Rye fans are pumped and rightly so. It's their day to brag, so let them brag a little bit and don't rain on their parade. They beat the top dog (or at least one of the two) in Section 1. Jay will bounce back. Congrats Rye

  35. Busey

It's really a shame all those seniors left on the Spring Break Trip. How do they expect to win any games?!? I say SPRING BREAK '09 for the RYE HIGH SCHOOL GARNETS if it means they will continue to beat the likes of JJ, Mahopac, and Somers.

  36. John

Joe, can you post the Suffern/Bosco score as soon as you know? Thanks!

  37. googleboogle

Sick game!!! Both teams played well, but Rye's D came up huge after a couple quick goals. Rye's goalie Rix played outstanding as always and Rye's offense was balanced as usual (Fulmer had a great game on O, i think 3 goals including the OT winner). Awesome game!! JOE- how is this gunna mix up the fab five?????

  38. googleboogle

JJ goos game as well and good luck in the rest of the season, Rye keep up the good work… hopefully we get a few section 1 teams in the states

  39. LAX

Well I disagree with that statement. Rye's good but not as good as JJ, pretty close, but no way better than JJ, think what you want but I'm sticking with my opinion even after this game. It's only one game, upsets happen all the time so deal with it, act like JJ would have acted like if they won the game and not make a big deal out of it if you truly think Rye's better than JJ . Jay could've easily won with a goal in overtime and was leading most of the game. It was such a close game that there shouldn't be any bragging or statements that Rye's better than JJ, but congratulate them for a great game.

  40. Josh

Rye has every right to celebrate with the players and fans they just beat a team that was once ranked in the top ten .. had a 47 game winning streak and was supposed to kill them.

  41. section 1

LAX- i hear what you are saying, we cant redefine our opinions on both teams just on one game. JJ has consistently slapped around opponents in Section 1, and today Rye was just more up for the game i suppose. Great win, but lets hope Rye, JJ and Town step it up come state tourney time.

Busey- What is that about Rye and spring break?

  42. LAX

I was referring to laxsauce's statement btw. But I guess you're right Jim Teacher, I shouldn't quiet the Rye fans you have the right to brag after a great game against a good team so I disagree with some of the things I said. As for Fab five, let Joe think what he wants. I think Jay is still better than Rye but that's just my opinion.

  43. lacrossegeek

Hey LAX-lighten up we all know JJ is one of the top teams in the state, but let rye celebrate for today. They played a great game and deserve credit for running with a team like jay.

  44. NYLax10

Stop with this "John Jay is still better than Rye, so shut up". It's ridiculous. I don't know any Rye fans that are going to brag about being better than John Jay. This win is all about bringing legitimacy to the Rye program. They have been right there for the past few years with all the big dogs (including Cold Spring and Shoreham). Can we just stop with this "Jay is in a separate league" crap. Actually, extend that to the Town base too. Rye is a very legitimate team, and now they have their first win over a national program. Hopefully, for Rye and Section 1's sake, this is just the first of many big wins.

  45. OleRy Laxman

JJ is the King, but sometimes it's NOT "good to be the king" (sorry Mel Brooks) Any top program has a target on their back and the facts are sometimes you just run into a tough team who plays a little bit better and comes out with a W. Hats off to JJ. Streaks are made to be broken. Great job by Dooley Inc and a tough group of GARNETS. Nice crowd of supporters for both schools at Nugent Stadium. Next task beat, MAMARONECK.
Way to go Rye! Usual Rye team, not headline makers but a talented smart group of young men who work together and accomplish much….....

  46. nicolette

Giants beat the Patriots in the super bowl, although a good deal of people still say the Pats were better. But guess what? Who cares. The giants won. I think you should stop talking for a little and understand that Rye, won, you lost, end of discussion. Who's "better" and who wins might not always be the same, but, get try to get this, I know it's confusing… you win by winning, not be being better. End of discussion.

P.S. If the state tournament is all that really matters, then why even play the regular season? Are regular season games just exhibitions? That makes tons of sense…

  47. 16 fo life

Too bad number 16 on Byram wasn't there

  48. wow

rye now has the longest active winnging streak against section 1 opponents. and lax were u at the game?

  49. IrvMan

Irvington laid a beat down on a less than impressive Peekskill team, winning 13-0.
Irvingtons defense played lights out the whole game, and the offense found ways to score throughout the game.

  50. wow

lax- who said rye is better? all ppl have been saying is that jj is obviously not on a different level. ur such a soar loser. and how do u tell wat teams r better if not scores of games? so i assume that u think yorktown is a much better team then jj by looking at results against mutual opponents. b/c ytown beat teams that beat jj…

  51. 16 Fan

16 Fan here again….16 dominated the field yet again….empires anyone?

  52. Joe Lombardi

Rye's upset of John Jay was front and center tonight on "Varsity Central Extra" on RNN. We also talked about it throughout the half-hour broadcast. You can check it out here. Just click on 6:30 p.m. under the TV screen.

  53. 16 is GOD

#16 was the dominant figure on planet earth today. Congrats to him.

  54. Joe Lombardi

Here are some other scores we have so far:

    Irvington 13, Peekskill 0
    Pearl River 6, Roosevelt 5
    Sleepy Hollow 7, Wappinger 4
North Salem 18, New Rochelle 6
    Lakeland/Panas 11, Somers 8

  55. LAX

Wow calm down. I'm sorry for getting a little upset Rye deserves to celebrate. Idk who said Rye is better than JJ… maybe "Rye betta than u" whose comment I was referring to with the terrible refs nonsense. And yes I do tell what teams are better bye scores of the games. I never said JJ is better than Yorktown, but if you look at scores it can go either way, ytown beat teams that beat JJ but JJ beat a couple teams by much more than ytown. All I'm trying to say is that it's just one game, and this is the only game in which Rye played better than JJ if you look at all the scores. I'm not a soar loser didn't I congratulate Rye 3 times I'm just trying to make a point but sorry if you didn't like my attitude. Go brag all you want Rye fans deserve it, JJ probably isn't at a "different level" I'm just pointing out that I still think they're better.

  56. Syracuse

I think Yorktown won 12-5. Heard they played very sloppy but enjoyed getting their revenge for last year.

LAX—Dude, just let Rye fans have their day. This is obviously a huge moment for that program. You could very well be right that this loss was a fluke, but you aren't winning any arguments today. Go kick back and watch the Celtics-Cavs bro …

That said, congrats to Rye on your historic victory.

  57. LAX

Nicolette I never said that Rye didn't deserve to win, I thought JJ should've won, but that's different today Rye played better. I just said that JJ is still better as you're pointing out. I understand they won and I've underestimated them. I just didn't like some of the sarcastic attitudes, I'm not the one who said JJ is at a different level so don't blame me. And most teams DO think that the state tournament is 10x more important than the regular season. The regular season matters, but the games are not going to win you a title or anything, it wouldn't make sense to think that the state tournament isn't what really matters if you're a good team.

  58. hassel

    Brewster 20, Mameroneck 6
I think like ten guys on Brewster had multiple points (G's + A's) on Senior Night at the Brewery.

Congrats to Rye, proving that John Jay is beatable.

    Now, if you don't mind….
    New Power Rankings:
    1. Y'town (Haven't lost in Section 1 yet)
    2. John Jay (Too deep in talent to slip more than one)
    3. Rye (Sorry guys, but if Y'town beats Jay, you're definitely #2.)
    4. Brewster (Lost to Y'Town(10-11), John Jay(6-16) and Rye(4-5))
    5. Iona Prep (Just keeps winning)

  59. LAX

So I'm out guys once again I'm sorry if you guys got the wrong idea and got angry at me, I didn't mean everything that I said. I truly congratulate Rye on this win, I am upset and that's a thing that a Jay fan should admit today, but I'm not bashing Rye they're a great team. Luckily this win is mostly for pride and both teams will almost definitely enter the state tournament where games are much more important and hopefully they'll go far.

  60. stevo

does that leave town as the only team to not lose to a section 1 team…..good lax in section 1 this year or down year for everyone….topic for another day perhaps….

  61. Laxtown

For section 1 to be respected by LI, MD, Upstate, et al, we need 3-4 top programs who play great lacrosse year in and year out and go far into the state tournament. Having a program like Rye on the rise is great for section 1. Besides, if all we can talk about is JJ and Yorktown things would get boring fast. Great to see Rye and Brewster solidly a part if Section 1 fab five. Good luck to Rye the rest of the way.

  62. joba

once rye has players who been through a youth program like ytowm and jj they will become a power far beyond ytown and jj. i would estimate about 3 players on rye have been playing before 7th grade and most of the rest started 8th 9th and even tenth grade and i bet over 90 % of jj played youth lax.

  63. stevo

how did they shut down the offense of JJ…shut offs, zone, etc

  64. rye

rye's got twice the depth JJ has ever seen, rye would happily remath JJ. To remind these bloggers who won. "rye was trying harder" these comment are BS. Make all the lame excuses you want, Rye's number one in everything and dont any of you freaks forget it.

  65. fan

did anyone see the Byram Mahopac game?

  66. #1 BABY

"Rye" have a point, they will beat any team in section one at any sport…especially Football, and evidently lacrosse aswell.

  67. #1 BABY

No, but i saw Rye v Bryam and Rye v Mahopac… Doubled both of their scores

  68. wats husking?

hassel- i almost find it funny that rye beats jj so town moves up and rye doesn't. so u say that if town beats jj then rye moves to 2? well then using the same logic if jj beats town then rye is 2 behind jj. btw jj shud smack town they are much better

  69. Joe Lombardi

Hen Hud 13, Clarkstown South 10
    Brewster 20, Mamaroneck 6
    Pleasantville 7, Scarsdale 6

  70. Josh

I think Rye beAT jOHN Jay because of the way they were rolling before this gAME. mOMentum is huge in any sport and it gives your team alot of confidence. The coaches and players feel good about themselves and do a better job. If Rye played Yorktown today i think Rye would win but that's just Hypotheticaly thinking. I think Rye should be #2 and why does everyone care about Rankings it's all about the Championships. YOu people don't know what your talking about.

  71. ????

    so did rye win today?

  72. RYe won

scoreboard, scoreboard , scoreboard, scoreboard, scoreboard thats all i got to say 9-8 9-8 9-8 rye is number one and yorktown do what rye did and then we will talk

  73. ......

who won the Byram Mahopac game?

  74. L@X

    Rye fans,
you guys need to calm down a bit. i love and support rye teams but their is no way some of these post hold any merit ex. "they will beat any team in section one at any sport" come on guys don't go making outrageous comments like that just feel good about your self and don't overlook the rest of the season cause if you boys really want to be #1 at the end of the year you have to prove it by creaming the upcoming teams. please show respect to teams you have played and teams you will play. there is no reason to shove one of the worst losses of the season in JJ faces. i don't think they would be doing that to you. so grow up a bit and show some maturity.

  75. Blog Reader

Rye enjoy the victory, but remember Hen Hud took you to 3 overtimes too….

  76. lauren

josh- so granted rye has won 11 straight but u consider needing three ot's to beat hen hud and only playing ok to beat iona by one goal being on a roll?

  77. lauren

....b/c it seems like ur saying rye own b/c they were more confident which i can't believ is the case considering the score last year and jj's streak

  78. LoveTownLax

Congratulations Rye! I say a round of Spring Breaks in '09 for everyone! kudos to the boys and the "brothers Dooley!"

Josh – guess you'll have to wait until next year, but feel free to keep "hypothetically thinking"

joba – are you sure about the # that played youth league? But I guess time will tell, lots of Rye youth playing now.

OleRy laxman – "History of the World Part I" is a classic, for sure…! It IS good, but not easy, to be the King!

sounds like good lax played by 2 great teams…

  79. Rye betta than u

I think it's fair to say Rye would dominate any team in any sport. It's a fact of life you should take a note from one of Rye's hockey, Football, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, baseball games. They are all dedicated players who own section 1.

  80. L@X

i think rye has an amazing, if not the best high school sports program in the section, but they do not "own" everybody. if you need examples then you are not a true fan.

  81. Laxwatcher

Let Rye fans have there good times and all. Obviously this game is not as big as the JJ v Huntington game last year but it was same scenario, JJ beat a team that they were supposed to get lose to. All of us JJ fans were feeling high about ourselves then so let Rye do the same. I know its not nearly as big, since huntington was ranked 1 in the country with all these great players etc., but i'm just making a point. Congratulation to Rye.

  82. Rye betta than u

Like they deserve what they get though, they work their asses off so it's like it's handed to them on a silver platter. THey work for it. But good luck JJ, it's only a loss. Hopefully theres a great season ahead of you, and Rye don't get to high on this win because it could bite you in the butt.

  83. LAX

Rye does have great athletics, but the best at every sport is outrageous. Compared to JJ, Rye has better hockey and probably field hockey even though JJ went 9-3-5, but not sure about everything else like Soccer, baseball, wrestling, softball, volleyball, lacrosse, football.

  84. Freedom Writer

Joe what is ur prediction for NS vs. Harrision tomarrow?

  85. hen hud lax

rye suprised many but not the 25 plus on roster….the town said they played poorly vs rye but gave rye no credit for their poor play…..jj vs town has bigger meaning…when jj beats the town whats that mean in sectional rankings…could rye be #1? brewster has officially dropped to # 4. As far as youth lax rye has at least 6 players who have played for greenwich or larchmont mamaroneck includimg the Santangelo brothers, Prostano,McCormack.Kehlenbcach,Davis amongst others..now wait until Rye Youth Lacrosse kicks in in its 4th year of existence

  86. G-lax

    take a sip, Rye

  87. Joe Lombardi

    FW – North Salem 8, Harrison 6

  88. Vin D'Andraia

"scoreboard, scoreboard , scoreboard, scoreboard, scoreboard thats all i got to say 9-8 9-8 9-8 rye is number one and yorktown do what rye did and then we will talk"

They don't need to. THEY BEAT YOU ALREADY
Congrats to Brian and Scott and your squad. Great win!!!!

  89. cuzIsaidso

Love the enthusiasm by the rye fans, but now it's time to show some class – don't say things you might have to eat in the future.

  90. LoveTownLax

we're sorry, you're all correct, 'Town played it's best games EVER against Rye…..happy now?

hen hud lax – doesn't necessarily work that way, cause 'Town still….did beat Rye, remember? That does not, however, discount their awesome win!

  91. 12rock

Rye fans congrats on the win …. hard work and playing together as one has payed off enjoy you folks in Rye deserve it …to the Jay fans it's not the end you know you will bounce back …it had to end some time … this is what makes sports the best ... my saying is on any given day!!!!!... so for the up coming games and other teams in C div remember on any given day ..play it hard

  92. cuzIsaidso

LoveTownLax – your sarcasm is underwhelming!

  93. Slacrosse

    Bloggers,

    I'm a Rye fan.

Please dont waste your time responding to waht I assume above is no more then unnessary ridiculous "baiting" or "kidding" (cant be serious!!!) commnets about rye beating everyone in everything!!

    Concentrate on serious bloggers.

  94. LoveTownLax

gee cuz, and just last week we were friends… :o( that seems to be the concensus among the recent bloggers (that 'Town couldn't play any better than they did that particular day) and I was just admitting it too….thought I was being benevolent. seriously, Rye's D is certainly good! You know, regardless of which team wins on Friday May 16th, all 3 are great teams. And, by the way, so are lots of other teams in Section 1. Did you see the "516" challenge on the other thread? I say go get 'em Rye….

  95. LoveTownLax

also, cuz, hen hud lax said that 'Town "gave Rye no credit for their poor play" that's okay with you? I thought most said it was 6 – 3 cause Rye's D is so good. what do you think?

  96. Jim

Most of these posts about rye are not kids on the team, so we havent been talking crap, we just work hard and keep winning.

  97. LoveTownLax

Jim – I think you're right, I don't think it's players either. They do work hard and do keep winning! lots of class. My comment was NEVER directed at the kids, only bragging bloggers, and if it was taken that way, my apologies and grovels.

& yea for 'Towns win today! (no strings attached!)

Happy Mother's Day to all the lax moms out there!

  98. Jim

LoveTownLax- i didnt think you directed it at the kids, i just wanted everyone to know that. I dont like bragging bloggers either. Congrats on the win today
