Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Rye 9, John Jay 8

May
8

As I’m sure everyone knows through the updates on our today’s games thread, Rye pulled off a thrilling 9-8 double overtime win over John Jay. Sam Fulmer scored unassisted with 3:00 left in the second overtime.

I’ll be back with more thoughts a bit later.

For now, here’s our breaking news update that was posted moments ago on the LoHu.com sports homepage.

We’ll also have photos and video available soon.

Rye’s upset also led off the “Varsity Central Extra” show on RNN tonight. You can check out the show here.

Congrats to Rye! Best part about this win, Joe Lombardi can stop counting JJ wins in the section.

  2. SWIAC

    . . . . and Dino Garr wasn't even there.

  3. L@X

actually SWIAC Dino Garr was there and congratulated both Dooleys on their victory. maybe you weren't there..

    Joe,

After all the Lacrosse fans, scouts, town grads, ref haters, and reporters had their say, only one blogger called the game right. the one and only #14 Red, Zack. I think serious consideration should be give to listing Zack`s predictions in a weekly column.
    Zack Rules
    Congratulations Rye Garnets
    Congratulations Brian Dooley.
    On to the sectionals

  5. #1 BABY

Best team in section one no doubt. Class C playoffs, get ready.

  6. wow

actually a d man on rye has been saying nonstop everyday that rye would win 9-8 against jjand has been predicting scores all year. actually he could be "zach." btw dino garr was there

  11. AWA

    wow
Checked out the Rye roster, and nobody fits the "Zack" profile, he said he was "14 red, playing Bronxville " after the main event. I think we have a prodigy here.
Zack, whats your call on the Rye-Mamaroneck? score Saturday

  12. lovelacrosse

And congrats to Rye, the Dooley brothers are doing a great job as coaches and this team seems to be getting better and better each year.

  13. Joe Lombardi

You can check out photos of the game, including Rye's celebration after Sam Fulmer's winning goal here.

  14. LacrosseInsider

Wow is all I can say, I was at the game…hats off to the Rye coaches for a tremendous gameplan, and hats off the the Rye players for playing their hearts out. It was a well officiated game, Rye outcoached and outplayed Jay, bottom line. Jay had several chances to win it in OT, they had the ball with 3 minutes to go and they took stupid shots, no setting the offense just a few players trying to win it. As a Jay fan, they have their hands full on Sat, they could lose the next 2, which might be a good think for them heading into the post season (a little grounding??). At this point, with the Town game at Town, I have to give the edge to Town. Syracuse – I am with you, no more predicting games!

  15. Zack

    who is awa

  16. rocklandddd

    incredible

  17. #1 BABY

I think it was the second or third game of the season, no? Now they are on an 11 game winning streak, and beat one of the best teams in the country…

    rye 9-jj 8

    the exact score was predicted

  19. stevo

they did not beat a stanthonys or chaminade during that stretch though…congrats to rye..a huge win for their program….my rankings town, rye, jj, brewster, lp and iona tied…...rye showed it can play with the big boys, now they need more big boys on their schedule throughout the season so tehy can do it game in and game out…like the JJ's and Towns….it helps them get better each year adn i think rye will start this next year..this year they played wantagh, but maybe they could step up and try to get a manhasset or corning east or a team like that who competes for a title each year….well done dooleys and well done rye..good luck from here on out..if jay beats town, then we have what is called a stalemate..you cant throw out wins, losses just cuz they were early..it is good for section 1 to have teams that can compete….

  20. live to lax

yeah uhm, im pretty sure yorktown beat rye and on top of that beat chaminade and st anthony's? the head to head definitely overrides the other games, and on top of that, chaminade is a better team than john jay- not taking anything away from rye- a great win- but to immediately claim them as #1? that's a little overboard

  21. Zack

Rye will beat Mamaroneck 13-7. I have done some research and found out that Mamaroneck is 5-9 not knowing if they beat Brewster or not. I think Brewster probably won. Though Mameroneck won 3 straight not knowing if they beat Brewster or not they will not stand a chance. Rye on the other side are 12-2 with 11 straight with loses vs. Yorktown and Wantagah in Long Island it will be a easy win for them. By the way can Mamaroneck beat John Jay with Chris Bocklet who is going to Virgina and Kevin Drew as US Lacrosse calls them a 1-2 punch. I don't think so. I congratulate the Rye Garnets and Sam Fulmer with the nice goal. My team ended up losing 5-2 vs. Bronxville of a bad game. They were better then I thought.

  22. Zack

By the way I am 9. Not kidding.

  23. LAX

I think new rankings should be
    1) Yorktown
    2) JJ
    3) Rye
    4) Brewster
    5) Iona

Think what you want it's my opinion. Not sure about 1 and 2 until may 17th but if JJ loses to another team town beat I think town deserves to be #1.

    rye 9-jj 8

    someone predicted the exact score

  25. wats husking?

well lax if thats how u think the rankings should be done it should be town, rye,jj. btw jj is much better than town

  26. LAX

I still think JJ and town are the definite top two though, even after today. And btw I'm a jay fan, I'm just not sure that JJ should remain in the top spot after losing to rye. But maybe they still do deserve that top spot it's confusing until May 17th.

  27. Syracuse

I just don't see how John Jay can be ranked ahead of Rye next week in any poll, provided neither team loses again the rest of the week.

Basically what we have now is three teams tied for the top spot in the section, especially if Jay beats Yorktown on May 16.

Actually only a Jay win over Yorktown will give Jay and Rye the right to claim part of the throne. If Yorktown adds a win over Jay to its win over Rye, end of story.

Man, I am looking forward to Brewster-Jay rematch and Rye vs. Long Island …

  28. lovelacrosse

A win is a win, no matter what point in the season. I'm not taking anything away from Rye's win, they should be extremely proud. This is the type of lacrosse everyone wants to see and these types of wins make this section proud but to say #3 is anybody but Yorktown is more than overboard.

  29. Joe Lombardi

    Here's the box score:

    Rye 9, John Jay 8, 2OT
    John Jay (10-4) 4 1 1 2 0 0—8
    Rye (12-2) 3 1 1 3 0 1—9
Goals — JJ: Billy LaPerch 2, Chris Bocklet 2, Will Stewart 2, Harrison Jones, Kevin Drew; R: , Sam Fulmer 3, Alex Prostano 2, Frank Lorono 2, Kevin Gordon, Robert Santangelo. Assists — JJ: Bocklet 3, Harrison Silver, Drew, Tyler Granelli; R: Lorono, Gordon, Fulmer. Saves — JJ: Chris Latino 16; R: Matt Rix 17.

  30. TT

I am also looking forward to JJ vs. Town. Should be a hell of a battle. I have to think the game will be close, but you never know. Gotta get there early for a seat, I suspect a big crowd. Maybe we see some solid out of section talent on the Rye schedule soon ala JJ & Town?

  31. Josh

You guys should get it Rankings don't mean anything.Rye should just be focused on how to beat a Long Island Team the third time wasn't the charm last year so hopefully they get there a fourth time and can take it. I feel like it was in football when Rye couldn't beat Chenango Forks and then they finally did it and then beat them again this year. Hopefully i can see that matchup again in syracuse in November again because i enjoy Rye football and LAcrosse. Hopefully we make Hofstra an annual Spring Stop just like the football team has made the dome an annual fall stop.

  32. Syracuse

    lovelacrosse,

Let me get this straight: Yorktown in your opinion should be No. 3 right now? Please tell me you didn't say that and that I misunderstood.

  33. LAX

Not related to the subject but JJ's former star John Carozza is looking to be awarded "move of the year" out of any sport in SU athletics this year. Found this on JJ website sick move.
    http://www.suathletics.com/vote_cuseawards.asp?path=cuseawards

Syracuse the reason I'm picking JJ over Rye is because JJ did better against every mutual opponent, and this game was so close, most of the way it was either tied or JJ was winning until the end, that this doesn't prove who's better imo, though it does make Rye seem a whole lot better. I just can't see Rye over JJ or Yorktown they haven't dominated teams and played out of section opponents like jay and town did.

  34. laxxxin3456

Congrats to RYE and the DOOLEY BRO's!!! Yorktown back to #1 Rye #2 JJ #3…...Town only team to be undefeated in section now..

  35. lovelacrosse

No, that's definitely not what I meant, sorry if my wording was confusing. Yorktown in my opinion is #1 in the section considering they have yet to lose to a section 1 opponent.

  36. LacrosseInsider

    1. Town
    2. Rye
    3. Jay

and I am a Jay fan…how can you rank Jay over a team that just beat them, sorry, no way.

I still think the Sec 1 title game is next Friday, whoever wins is #1, no disrespect to Rye but they lost to Town, if Jay beats Town then Jay is #1. If Town wins, then the rankings stay as posted above assuming no losses to other Sec 1 teams. I think Jay will have a very tough time trying to beat Town at home.

  37. Syracuse

I give Jay and Rye a much better chance of winning a state title than Town has. Actually, Rye might have the best chance of any of them.

  38. LAX

LacrosseInsider, Rye hasn't dominated other section 1 opponents like JJ has. This was a double overtime game, so it wasn't like Rye crushed them, the better team is bound to get upset sometimes after many, many games against section 1 opponents.

  39. Sec 1 lax fan

Saw end of 1st/beginning of 2nd half – in 2nd period JJ was up one or two and hit a couple of posts before Rye came down to bring it back to even or 1 down. I don't think Rye was going to get the game get away from them.

JJ D looked a step slow, middie O depth is not there – mostly Drew 'trying' to break down from on top. They have some nice feeds to their cutters in first half, but once Rye adjusted to the movement in the middle, JJ O was bottled up.

  40. LAX

Did Yorktown rank over Chaminade in the IL rankings when Yorktown beat them by 4? No. Just looking at some of the scores against mutual opponents I definitely can't rank Rye over Jay, if Rye beat them by 3 or more that would be a different story though… but Jay was winning for most of the game. You're not obligated to say that the winning team is always better than the losing team, because that's not always the case. Most of the time it is, but imo the losing team still deserves to be ranked higher this time. Rye played a little better than Jay this game, but this may have been the only game they did play "better than jay" the whole season.

  41. joba

jj was not winning most of the game

  42. LAX

I meant to say either they were winning or it was tied for most of the game, which is true.

  43. Syracuse

You are missing the point. Jay was supposed to win this game. They had the 47-game Section I winning streak. They were annointed as the new Yorktown by so many people I lost count. Plus Jay let a team not known for offense in Rye score 9 goals. I wonder how many Brewster is going to score, or Yorktown for that matter.

The better team won today. If they played again tomorrow, maybe Jay would win, but too many alarming things went down in this game to convince people that Jay is as good as some believe and is worthy of being, at this point, ranked ahead of Rye.

Plus, you can't compare scores from early April to early May. How many times have I said it? You just can't. That's why Jay's 16-6 win over Brewster a ways back will end up being the biggest farce of a score this season. When the rematch happens everyone will point to that result, but they shouldn't.

Work in progress. Work in progress. Work in progress.

I say it about Yorktown all the time. Don't judge them on a blowout loss to Ward Melville or McDonogh in early April. John Jay has lost nearly all of its "tough" games this year. And now the season is nearly two-thirds over.

Are they still elite? Are they worthy of being in that ASININE Inside Lacrosse poll? Are they going to smoke Yorktown? These are question only John Jay FANS should answer.

It's easy to kill Town when they don't put up results like they did in the early 1990s, isn't it? Now you know how it feels.

  44. laxer

    joba-
acutally they it was in a bit of a patter, jay would go up one then rye would go and tie it. So in a sense jay was up for most of the game. But then in the fourth rye broke that pattern when they went up 8-7 scoring 2 or 3 in a row..correct me if im wrong.

  45. Sound Shore

Rye victory should be celebrated by all program south of 287. Congrats to the Rye program. Good luck the rest of the way.

  46. 516

Hate to be the wet-blanket on this Section I love-fest, but Rye does not get off Long Island…Mt. Sinai, CSH and Manhasset are all stronger.

  47. LoveTownLax

today is the perfect day to be a wet blanket with the rain and all, but we'll see what happens on game day 516! Go Rye!

  48. Slacrosse

Congrats to rye for great win. Guys and coaches worked at extreme level of intensity to prepare for game. Rix played great and once rye adjusted to J's cutters J's offense became more "ordinary"(realtively speaking). Rye's offence not overly pressured and fans and I'm sure players felt confident Rye could score vs J (There was some concern that Coach Savastano who was about 10 yards into the field for most of the game might join J's offense!!) I've cheered FOR and seen Drew win or almost single handily win games for Jay (Manhassat game) but Rye handled he,Bocklet and others. Granelli's won most of 1st half faceoffs but in 2nd half he started fouling on a few and when he and McCormack collasped, think Rye won most of those face-offs. J brought in other smaller guys + Bocklet and think McCormack won most of these. Aside from being one of most dominant face-off guys in section McCormack's also great on ground balls (only a soph).

Was great game.Jay played their butts off and game obviously could have gone either way. As GREAT as I feel for Rye (my team) I can acutely appreciate the disappointment and frustration of Jay. They're a terriffic team. That's the way it goes!! The kids on each team know and respect each other from hockey and scrimmaging in football.

Rye has established itself as within the same quality universe as Town and Jay. ONLY by playing a SERIES of games agianst each other could one REALISTICALLY place them in any particular order

I've said before that rye must start playing strong out of section competion (as they did with Wantaugh this season) to make them better, get more recognition, and earn the respect that J and Town have for their out of Section schedules.

Jay shouldn't fixate on national rankings. Course you want to be in them since it exists but THEY ARE BOGUS. No way anyone can put this group of diverse teams (many of whom dont play each other and come from diff parts of country) in ANY rational order. J, Town,Rye, just win or do very well in the states and let the rankings takecare of themselves.

This is great for Sect 1 as it shows more depth in high quality lacrosse. Lets all push for Sec 1 to continue this. Brewster is very close to the top 3 and the J/Brewster game will be close. The LP and Pac programs will rise again for sure.

RIGHT NOW since I HAVE to rank for upcoming Fab 5 which I hate to do particularly before T/J game:

    1) Town (until play J,win over rye + 2 wins over really good LI teams. Town REALLY needs to showcase their ability by beating a not so dominant wilton team this week.)
    2) Jay (given Rye game could have gone either way Jay's much larger wins vs common opponents then Rye qualitatively Jays strong out of section sched (albeit not a great record). A win over very strong Comsequoge would give a real boost to Jay for playoffs ans satates
    3)Rye
    4)Brewster
    5)IP
