'We thought our goose was cooked…

I’m not sure if that was the corniest expression I’ve ever heard, or the best, but frankly, I don’t care. It was awesome to get a quote that I had never heard before.

After the game, a 10-5 Brewster win, what struck me was how if you arrived after the game and looked at postgame meetings, you’d have been completely confused as to who won and who lost. In fact, not confused, you would have gotten it wrong.

Brewster was a frustrated team that felt it had a subpar performance, especially after an impressive showing in an 11-10 loss at Yorktown and a good 9-6 win over Long Island’s Hauppauge.

Horace Greeley was encouraged that it played Brewster, one of the best teams in the section very well.

Of course, this gets in the dangerous territory of the “moral victory” debate, and Greeley coach Roy Colsey was quick to say there are no such things. However, he could be legitimately pleased with his defense, especially Derek Katchis who did a great job against Section 1 leading goal scorer Matt King, holding him without a goal.

As for Brewster, it’s clearly John Jay’s biggest threat in Class B. But to eveb have a remote chance in that type of game, it would need to play significantly better than it did against Greeley to have any chance. If it didn’t, its goose would get cooked really, really fast.

C'mon man … "But to even have a remote chance in that type of game, (Brewster) would need to play significantly better than it did against Greeley to have any chance."

Here we go again. John Jay is not this juggernaut. They are a good team, sure, but they are not world beaters.

Let's see the Jay D, which very often gets a free pass on this board it seems, slow down Brewster's offense, which many of the guys from The Journal News have called one of the best in Section I.

Let's talk about that for a change.

About the author
Joe Lombardi Joe Lombardi did not become familiar with lacrosse until after graduating from both Irvington High School and the University of Dayton Ñ neither of which offered the sport. But it didn't take him long to take a liking to lacrosse since it combines elements of several of his favorite sports: basketball, hockey and football. In addition to serving as local sports editor of The Journal News and LoHud.com, he also writes the weekly "Catching up with...":http://lohud.com/catchingup feature that appears on Tuesdays. Joe can also be seen each Monday during the school year on RNN's "NewsCenter Now," providing a look at the week ahead in local sports, as well as on "Varsity Central Extra," which appears on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.
