The White Plains-North Salem boys lacrosse game was a good one, won by White Plains 11-6. White Plains is playing really well of late, winning its last six and 10 of its last 11 and North Salem is definitely a program on the rise…and doesn’t appear to be too far away from being a small school contender.
But the best part of the game was the entertainment value provided by WP coach Mark Armogida and NS coach Brendan Curran. These two have been friends for about seven years, dating back to when Curran coached at Scarsdale. They engaged in a running commentary with each other and the officials that was rather enjoyable to listen to. Definitely added some great entertainment value to this game.
Some of my favorite moments:
In the second quarter, Curran called out a play and Armogida told his defense exactly what North Salem was going to do. Curran yells back, “Doesn’t matter, we’re scoring anyway.” (They didn’t, though White Plains did get fooled by the play and it took a nice interception of a pass by goalie Auston Longfield.) On the next possession, Curran called a different play and said, “Bet you don’t know this one,” and Armogida responded with exactly what was going to be done.
Curran offered to show Armogida his playbook with his glossary of all the terms and what they meant. Frankly, I don’t think he needed it.
Curran successfully talked Armogida out of calling a timeout during a time when White Plains was in jeopardy of losing possession saying, “Don’t bail them out.” Interestingly enough, Curran did call a timeout in a similar situation in the second half. Had to call him out on that one.
Somehow I doubt Dave Marr and Nick Savastano will be quite as jovial during next week’s game.
