Hot topic: John Jay-Rye predictions

May
7

The Rye Garnets are the three-time Class C sectional champions. During this run, the they have not yet been able to come away with a win against the eventual Class A or B champion.

Is this the year? The Garnets, who played Yorktown to a 6-3 game earlier this season, host another team that has won three straight sectional titles John Jay tomorrow at 5 p.m.

Can they pull off the upset and end the Indians’ 47-game win streak against Section 1 teams.

John Jay coach Nick Savastano seems to think so.

“We’re very concerned about Rye,” he told me today. “They’re tough and physical and very well-coached.”

What do you think?

While you’re at it, be sure to vote in our latest poll, which asks what Class C team poses the biggest threat to Rye.

And here’s an added trivia question — name the last Section 1 team to beat John Jay and the score.

    Bro yorktown 10-9 in ot

  2. LacrosseInsider

No chance, all this talk about Rye upsetting Jay is a joke. Jay is on another level, and we will see for sure tomorrow or I will swallow my sword. On another Jay note, as expected they fell out of the IL top 25 today. Greenwich snuck in – and a good game tomorrow is Darien at Manhasset. I think the Rye game tomorrow will be close up to the half and then Jay pulls away. One more thing, the Town / Wilton game should be good, it appears that St. Anthony's only beat Wilton by 1 goal…..

  3. Syracuse

I retired from prediciting, but … OK, one more …

    Jay 7, Rye 4

  4. Joe Lombardi

mr. – Nice job. You are correct. Yorktown won 10-9 in overtime at John Jay on April 12, 2005. It was a weekday night game.
I dug into our vault and got the box score. You can access it here.
I'm with you. Rye is a great defensive team. I just don't think the Garnets will be able to score enough goals to pull the upset. I'm going with 10-5 JJ.

  5. Zack

Rye will win. I am there waterboy. I am playing Bronxville right after. I am 14 on red (Rye).

I don't remember reading anywhere that Rye will upset JJ (except Zack's entry which we know is wishful thinking!) – did I miss something? Concensus seems to be that they will make a good game of it – hopefully they'll bring their A game, and, you never know….anybody watched "MIRACLE" lately?

  7. LaxNChill

    JJ 7-5 after 3 quarters FINAL= 13-6
JJ too overpowering and talented. This game is going to be very interesting up untill fourth quarter when john jay pulls away.

  8. LacrosseInsider

Hey – I also am predicting Jay 13-6!!

cuz – I quote Joe from the fab five discussion "A lot would have to go right for Rye to pull off what would be one of the biggest upsets in Section 1 in the last few years. Do the Garnets have a chance? Absolutely. But I am predicting John Jay to win 10-5."

All I am saying is the I do not believe that Rye has a chance. Jay is too deep and has played a nice schedule that has allowed them to build on the season, I just think they are on a higher level than Rye, we shall see tomorrow….

  9. coco

    rye 9-jj 8

  10. lacrosseoutsider

does jj even have a lacrosse team?

  11. JT lax

    halftime 6-4 jj

    final 12-6 jj

  12. Scout42

I'm going to have to go with JJ 12 Rye 5…JJ is just on another level

  13. LacrosseInsider

    Joe –

You state that the JJ/Rye game is at 5pm? I thought it was 4:30??

  14. Slacrosse

    Believe its at 4:30

  15. lacrosseInsider

    Looking forward to the game

  16. Sound Shore

After seeing Rye and viewing JJ recent results, I think the game will be close (but no cigar). Rye needs to clamp down on Bocklett (not easy), force other JJ Attack to step up and beat Rix, shadow Drew, play possession game and this may be a 8-5 JJ win. Rye's lack of strong feeds from the X is concerning, goals come via iso's. JJ will slide and play body to limit easy looks.

  17. Joe Lombardi

The game had originally been down for 5. It is now 4:30.

  18. John

Town has always seemed to have Jay's number even when Jay has more talented teams (took OT to win the section title)... Rye's coach is from Town.. That being said, I do not think Rye will be able to win, but like everybody else has said, they will probably keep it close, and maybe be winning at the half, Sav seems to be running alot more mids lately (relative to other years) and when his #1's are fresh in the 3rd and 4th quarter it will be hard for Rye to keep up.

Rye needs to play possession offense, I know they have a good defense, but holding the ball will be their best defense, don't sub mids off in transition or K Drew will be taking a shot by the time your pole and D-mids even step on the field… Stop the fast break.

Somethin like 12-4 Jay but one or two goal game at the half.

  19. Rye betta than u

WOW 12-4 JOHN jay Right? Guess not Rye takes it in OT 9-8 WOW…

  20. bobby

i hear jj is on another level than rye and rye has no chance

  21. bobby

o i take that back rye won 9-8

  22. Swallow the sword

"Jay is on another level, and we will see for sure tomorrow or I will swallow my sword." -Lacrosseinsider

    Hmm…

  23. lacrossegeek

Congrats to all the rye players, they are a well coached team.

  24. AWA

    Zack Rules
    Congratulations Rye

  25. wow

rye now has the longest active streak of wins against section 1 teams

  26. Zack

    who is AWA

  27. Syracuse

    WOW,

Considering Yorktown has not lost to a Section I team this year and Rye has I'd say Town holds that honor.

But if you're just poking fun at a certain school from a wealthy school district's fans, I feel ya …

  28. L@X

as i sit here filled with joy that my favorite team just beat a nationly ranked powerhouse, i am stunned by some of the predictions on here. it seems to me that most of those post are by people who have never seen rye play. they talk about these players as though they are the worst athletes in the section. one in particular about drew shooting before the rye middies sub is absolutely insane, even if its a exaggeration. Rye has some of the best athletes in section 1 and maybe it took this game to show everyone. i wish the rest of sec. 1 took on JJ with the same confidence that the rye players seemed to have today. in a lot of JJ's sec 1 games, they have been close at the half then pulled away the 3rd and 4th quarter. rye simply would not let that happen. they out hustled them, and at times it looked as though they wanted much more. The garnets D has to now be considered the best in the section. they have not let up more than 9 goals in a game all year. which was to Wantagh, in the early season. the refs did miss a few calls but they did not ruin the game in any way. Rye deserves all the credit they receive. they played hard and they were rewarded with a BIG W. but before all the rye fans go and start to brag to much just imagine if your beloved football team lost their impressive streak, and treat the jay fans as you would wish to be treated. Fantastic game by rye good luck the rest of the year. but joe i do have a question for you, say on may 17th JJ wipes the field with Yorktown then do you put Rye-first, JJ-second, Town-third
    is that even a possibility???

  29. LacrosseInsider

The sword hurts!! Congrats to the Rye coaches who did a fabulous job. Rye deserved the win, Jay could have won it in OT but took poor shots…As a Jay fan I am very, very worried about the next 2 games! (Com and Town).

  30. Josh

Good post about the Football team, This Rye team has almost the exact identical winning streak in the section as Rye does. I think they hAVENT'T LOST TO A SECTION 1 TEAM SINCE LATE IN THE 2002 PLAYOFFS WHEN THEY WERE TAKEN DOWN BY BRIARCLIFF. Hopefully Rye lacrosse and football keep it going.

  31. LAX

Does rye play upper league powerhouses in football like New Rochelle, North Rockland, or John Jay though?

  32. L@X

    LAX,
as i am sure you well know the class sections in football are very strict in who plays each other (Rye not playing Harrison in 04) therefore Rye, a class B football team, could not play a regular season game against the likes of the teams above. Rye can, however, scrimmage them and go to their camps, which i know is not the same as a regular season game. BUT, i went to the rye football scrimmage at JJ before the season stated, and by the looks of it, that rye team looked as though they could take JJ in a game. but i really do not want to start a football argument on a game that will never happen. so lets stick to lax… can't wait to see the new "fab" five.

  33. LAX

Rye's definately the best for their class and school size, they can't take New Rochelle in football but they're huge compared to Rye, just stating don't say Rye's the best in the section like I heard someone say at football, but for their size they're the best nice state championship.

  34. lauren

L@x- i think some rye fans are rubbing it in but me and i think many other rye players and some fans respect how jj isnt saying they played awful and rye should get no credit, b/c that means alot. and i think jj will dominate town when they play.

  35. L@X

i agree it shows very much of the class the JJ fans have to not come on here and just make dumb excuses. thank you JJ fans and good luck the rest of the year.

  36. Rye betta than u

Besides maybe New Rochelle there is no other football team, that can beat Rye. North Rockland has been down the past few years. And i Will put the 2005 Rye ftball team against any team the sections seen and that includes New rochelles Ray rices teams. Maybe i'm biased but that's the best football team i've seen since maybe Don Bosco Prep (NJ) in 2004. Let's get back to lax Congrats to The Dooley brothers and the Rye team, John Jay is still great and i hope to go to York Town to watch them play on the 16h,.

  37. LoveTownLax

lauren – maybe….or maybe not, but the 'Town boys thank you for YOUR vote of confidence – a lot of people said that Jay would dominate Rye and look what happened…..(just for the record, I thought it would be a good, close game)

because 'Town beat Rye, and Rye beat Jay, 'town automatically loses, & loses big?????

  38. G-lax

    what a joke

  39. LoveTownLax

    G-lax – fill us in…?

  40. Slacrosse

Agree with comment made above that 2005 Rye State champion football team would have had VERY strong shot to beat everyone except New Rochelle and the 2007 State Champs would have been one of the best teams in Sect A.

    OK. I'm done with football.
