Can Lakeland/Panas win for just the third time in 19 Murphy Cups? It would be a major upset. (Journal News file photo/Dave Kennedy)
There won’t be a need for grandiose speeches or motivational tricks. No gimmicks necessary.
Saturday’s 19th Murphy Cup meeting between Yorktown and Lakeland/Panas, matches two proud teams playing in honor and for the memory of Charlie Murphy, the patriarch of Yorktown lacrosse, and a man whose influence for these two programs can’t be quantified because it was limitless. In a game that is always emotional, expect to see an intense matchup of hard-hitting checks, battles for ground balls, shots with a little more oomph, focused defenders and goalies at their peak.
Yorktown has the better team, one that has superior talent, depth and experience, but Lakeland/Panas has the home field, a dangerous scorer in Jack Doherty and a solid goalie in Mike Mackay.
No question that Yorktown is a solid favorite, especially considering last year’s loss that it will be looking to avenge. Obviously, a win will suffice for Yorktown, but the ‘Huskers really could use more than that.
They need some confidence. They need a great performance in all facets.
This is a team that after beating St. Anthony’s on Chaminade gave some indication that it could put together a really special season, but hasn’t reached that level in recent games.
No better opportunity than to really play a complete game in the Murphy Cup.
It’s 6 p.m. tomorrow at Lakeland. No reason why you shouldn’t be there.

Is the game at 3pm or 6pm?
The game is at 6 tonite. It had originally been scheduled for 3.
