Alright fans, here's some added info on Rye-Iona Prep from, my esteemed colleague T-Watson.

Rye 6, Iona Prep 5: At Rye, Cole McCormack scored the winning goal with 10 minutes left. Teammate Kevin Gordon scored three goals for the Garnets. Myles Gillespie had three goals and had one assist for the Gaels.

So, is there any debate now…Rye has to be considered the third-best team in the area, right?

  2. busey

Yes, Iona should definately be fourth or fifth (between them and brewster) but yes Rye is a solid 3rd as of now.

    newest national rankings: http://www.insidelacrosse.com/page.cfm?pagerid=65840&cat=67366&hidecontent=yes&id=188711
JJ's not among the top but at least they're in again.

  5. LAX

Something else to mention, it's very rare that a team is among the best in the section in both lacrosse and baseball but this year for JJ it may be true.

  6. Syracuse

I don't know what to make of these rankings. Yorktown wasn't good enough to get in after back-to-back wins over two ranked teams in St. Anthony's and Chaminade, but Ward Melville flies up 11 spots after beating Yorktown???

And John Jay gets back in after beating Duxbury (not trying to start trouble here, just looking for answers), which isn't half the team that St. Anthony's and Chaminade are.

Someone explain this to me. I'm not arguing Ward Melville's or John Jay's merits. Obviously they are very deserving of being where they are, but why is Melville being rewarded for slapping around Yorktown? I mean, after all, Town hasn't been worthy all season, right?

  7. LAX

Yeah I found that kind of wierd that Melville is up at 5, but I think they deserve it. I don't think St. Anthony's have ever been ranked this season though Syracuse but they probably should.

  8. Syracuse

I thought at the time of the loss to Yorktown they were ranked No. 25 and Chaminade No. 9, but I could be wrong.

  9. Joe

    Joe,

What do you think about Briarcliff, picked them to lose twice and both times they had dominating performances. Right after the huge article on Sevaughn, Briarcliff's attackmen has 4-2.

  10. Joe Lombardi

Impressive win for the Bears over a White Plains team that was playing very well. Briarcliff is now off to a 7-1 start.

However, just to set the record straight, I picked the Bears to beat Wappingers and lose to White Plains, so I was 1-1 not 0-2, but not a big deal.

Also, you mentioned the game coming after an "article" on Savaughn Greene. It is actually a segment on RNN-TV's "Varsity Central Extra" and it hasn't aired yet. You can watch it tonite (Thursday) at 6:30 on Channel 19 or 6 in Westchester and Rockland (depending on your cable system), Channel 20 in Putnam and Channel 62 on DirecTV. Be sure to check it out and participate in our phone-in segment by calling 1-888-RNN-CHAT around 6:40. A good chance to get the word out about the Bears!

  11. BigBadBear

easy imitation Joe, only one of those goals came against Savaughn directly, if they had 9 others like him on their team, we would have been in big trouble. I do think the White Plains coach needs to take it down a notch or two, great win for the Bears

  12. laxwatcher

BBB – Great Point about Savaughn. Lax is 10 v 10, and very difficult for one very good player to have game deciding impact, just ask Marasco and Ferguson. Congrats on a great run for the bears.

  13. Slacrosse

    Syracuse,

Absolutely agree. Yeah of course since it exists you want your team ranked but rationally we know there is no way that they can be accurate except if it inc teams that play each other on a regular basis, even two times would be alot better indication, relatively speaking. also no way a Ca team like St Ig should be inc. How can they extrapolate that their undedeated record vs CA teams should put them in the pack with the "traditional" geographic powers! I know they're good but got to draw the line and say that CA lacrosse still has a ways to go. Even though some CA, COL and other teams have on occasion beaten traditional teams there are one-off situations. Know it may seem unfair. Once you get past regional sub sections within regions I think it's all a cr——-p shoot.

  14. NYLax10

I am impressed by Iona. I have been one of the most vocal opponents of Iona prep, I just thought that they did not play a good enough schedule to warrant being a top team in the section. I was proved dead wrong by yesterday's results. Iona is a very legitimate team this year and I applaud their efforts to play tougher competition.

Although, I still think that their place in the Fab Five last year was wrong, after all they did lose to Nyack. I had to put that in somewhere.

  15. Julia

Did Myles Gillespie of Iona Prep play in both the JV – Rye v Iona Prep game. and the Varsity game?

  16. reLAXing

    Julia –
no, Myles has been on varsity since his freshman year at Iona, he has a freshman brother Jack who plays for the JV team
