Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

Some thoughts on an eventful day

April
15

We knew this day would tell us a lot.

And it sure has.

Just a few moments ago, I put together some thoughts.

Among the games I discuss are Yorktown’s huge conquest of Chaminade, John Jay’s defense bouncing back after a shaky outing against St. Anthony’s in a win against Somers as well as Rye’s victory over Lakeland/Panas and Horace Greeley’s one-goal win over Mahopac.

thanks for the video blog. mahopac seems like they're getting right back to where they were last year

The latest Inside Lacrosse rankings were just released. Of note is the fact that John Jay is not ranked for the first time since last year's preseason poll. Here is the link.

Thats bull that Y-town isnt in there.

  4. Slacrosse

ZOB-agree that JJ should not have slipped out, that Greenwich was added. Dont think any California (ST.Ignatious)team or teams from states like Tex, Fla should be in rankings. The quality of play is greatly improving and some teams from these states have beaten east coast teams but they're just not beating the same quality of teams day in /day out that the best teams in the "classic location" are beating". You put St Igna in the MIAA (Baltimore) or out in LI vs best teams and they would be far from undefeated. Dont know how to fix this. Maybe if they beat 5-6 classic teams, could be different.

Finally Town should go in with the next BIG win

  5. LAX

I Hope JJ bounces back with a win at Duxbury on Monday, that should put them in their place.

Joe, Why do you think Yorktown is not in Top 20 in the country??? Just because of the Mcdonogh loss??

  7. Joe Lombardi

    sweetlaxin –
Most likely the fact that it was a 10-game margin in the loss to McD. Had it been a tight game it would be hard to imagine Yorktown not being there.

Honestly though, I do think they still belong. Winning at St. A's and Chaminade back-to-back should be enough to get you there. Those are the top two private schools on LI. If Yorktown beats Hen Hud and Ward Melville, which is off to a 6-0 start and ranked No. 16, it would be shocking not to see the 'Huskers in the Top 25 next week.

What do rankings really mean? Obviously not a whole lot. However, they are nice recognition for a program and provide a good barometer as to roughly who the top teams are. They are hardly scientific, of couse. But they do serve a purpose and spark debate.

  8. zob

Slacrosse- I agree alot about having these teams from all over in the top 25 isnt fair. I think that the only reason they should get into the top 25 is if they prove themselves against one of the top teams. St Andrews for example has beaten boys latin as well as other team and then blows out Florida teams so they deserve a spot but some of these other teams do not.

  9. Syracuse

I got news for everyone. Gilman would handle West Islip. People forget that the MIAA elite is currently better than any other state's elite, even New York. We just have a lot more depth, obviously.

    McDonogh 15, Yorktown 5
    Loyola Blakefield 15, St. Anthony's 5
    St. Paul's 11, Garden City 8

That's three NY powers that went down. So I wouldn't put too much stock in these rankings considering WI is currently ahead of Gilman.

  10. LAX

This year, I'd say so, but not last year with teams like West G, Huntington, JJ, West Islip, St. Anthony's, GC, Manhassat. But most of those teams are not as dominant as last year. Gilman may be eventually ranked #1 in the nation, and I'm saying they deserve it.

  11. G-lax

10th game for MD teams, first week for NY teams, big advantage
