Boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley with Joe Lombardi

I can't feel my toes

This man wore shorts today. I have no idea why. (Aaron Houston/Journal News file photo)

The dashboard in my car said it was 38 degrees. I don’t get it. It felt like negative 4. I covered Saturday night’s game between Hen Hud and Put Valley, won by Hen Hud 13-12, and it was freezing. FREEZING.

It was so cold that I sprinted to my car to get five minutes of heat during halftime. I know I wasn’t the only feeling it; the stats people were in pain as well.

Hen Hud coach Craig Solomon (pictured above) wore shorts. He’s already been eliminated from coach of the year consideration. He clearly has questionable judgment. Or maybe he’s tough.

Anyway, good to see a lacrosse game in person. The last ones I saw live were the state championship games last season and it’s been a long wait.

There were some really positive things from both teams in this game. For Hen Hud, the Sailors seem to have two stars in Andrew Nieminski and Collin Parkhurst. Nieminski had six goals and Parkhurst had four. The two are being counted on to replace the production of Robbie Bosco and Chase Bernard. Hen Hud also had a huge defensive stop to preserve its one-goal lead at 13-12 in the final 24 seconds.

For Put Valley, goalie John Landi was outstanding. The fact that he gave up 13 goals is extremely misleading. He was put in some tough spots.

Finally, I’d normally never write about “enthusiasm,” but I have to admit, I was impressed by Put Valley’s. Coming off what could have been a disheartening 18-5 loss to Brewster on Thursday, Put Valley never lost focus, energy, or confidence despite several deficits in this game. The Tigers’ sideline was extremely into it, even at bleak moments, and it didn’t seem contrived at all.

Well done.

PV`s John Landi will be a pleasant surprise to all PV fan`s this season. Nobody`s gotten a good look at him playing behind Cory Ender last season, but when Cory got injured John stepped in and kept PV in contention. He just didn`t get the press. I don`t know the exact numbers, but he had 6 or 7 wins last season. PV is a traditionally slow starting team, they`ll be ready for the Class C Sectionals again this season.

  2. can't compare

no comparison to Cory you can check out John's stats on line he played in quite a few games 7 half or more he had 3 wins

  3. Seniorlaxfan

Nobody`s comparing anyone to anyone. Reread the blog. There`s a disclaimer on the stats. Enjoy the games.

  4. WoLax

There is no comparison. Landi is a middle the road guy, nothing special. Ender has the ability to be at the next level. PV's D whether they get better or not, will not make a huge difference. Lets also hear from someone else besides theses goalies parents??

Here's the link to Jeff's story on last night's game, folks.

And BTW, I'm sure it was pretty darn cold in Montrose although Jeff is not exactly the best judge. This guy complains how cold it is anytime I ask him to cover any event when it's less than 60 degrees out.

BTW – I disagree with Jeff. I think Craig Solomon SHOULD be a candidate for coach of the year because he wore shorts despite the weather.

I do agree with your point about Put Valley showing a lot of resiliency coming off the one-sided loss to Brewster. They also obviously had a real good game offensively and more than doubled their goal output from Game 1.

Also folks, Goldie has an interesting Q&A with Horace Greeley first-year coach and lax legend Roy Colsey in today's Journal News on Page 2C. Check it out.

I spent four years in a blizzard at Colgate. The temperature would dip below zero on a consistent basis. My weather credentials speak for themselves.

Wo lax, not a parent here of a goalie. Cann't compare .. if you reread those blogs ,, you will see there is no comparing done.. I do know people that play on Put Valley and parents there . I haved been watching their games for 6 years now. Landi played last year when Cory was hurt and he won 3/4 of the games he started, no matter how you slice it.He won down in Delaware 4-0 . he won in binghamton Tournament 4-1 . he does not look athletic but most who meet him are surprised after watching him play . My humble opinion is yes he is pretty darn good

Folks I 'am not looking to start a arguement or a back and forth just telling some folks the facts.
And yes Cory was and probally is one of the better keepers that play at his age … i did not say best .. keep all calm

  9. can't compare

facts are Putnam Valley was 7-13 last year so to state he won 6-7 games and kept them in contention is just absurd. Secondly I understand there was more than one keeper at these tournaments is he the backup goalie from the Brewster game? Lets keep things on the up and up. Lets see what happens when they get a few more games in.

Facts are, When I originally stated "I don`t know the exact numbers" I obviously didn`t. My bad. I was wrong. Sorry. Forgive me. I`ll read all the back stats next time. How about if we just get back to supporting ALL the players on the PV team, and keep the comments about individual player shortcomings to our selves. The Team works hard off and on season, they deserve better. Go Tigers

By the way…Congrats to Hen Hud…In case anybody didn't notice…They WON

  12. sports fan

I posted in another blog that the Hen Hud goalie got no credit at all and he made some good stick saves.

Joe B … sorry about , what looks to be some bitter parent hmmm i wonder who (not that hard), Hen Hud played a solid game.. but it seems these two always play well on the same field. Joe b the kids on the field were good and the people in the stands were good ..nice job to Hen Hud

  14. P.V. Maybe?

hmm 12 rock i wonder who this is
ill see you in 10 minutes

  15. OMG
