Rye shoots for four straight

Rye’s Kevin Gordon is going to Colgate. Smart guy. (File photo by Elizabeth Orozco/The Journal News)

John Jay is the best team in Section 1. (Well, as of now.)

Yorktown has the best tradition.

But Rye has emerged as a small-school power. The three-time defending Class C sectional champ is looking for another one but will have to break in six new starters.

Still, until proven otherwise, Class C is Rye’s.

The Garnets are led by Colgate-bound (I love writing that) Kevin Gordon, an all-purpose middie solid on both ends.

He should be helped by Alex Prostano, an attacking midfielder and Dan Marchesani, a long stick middie.

I posed the question earlier about which position group is the best to have experienced players and it seemed like the choice was midfield. I agree. Bodes well for Rye.

Rye needs to find some consistent scorers. Coach Brian Dooley pointed to Robert Santangelo as a player who could produce some offense.

And it needs to break in new goalie Matt Rix, a senior who will be the primary starter for the first time in his career.

Rye’s obviously a team to watch, and the team to beat heading into the season.

Do you agree?

Let’s also hear who else you think will contend in Class C — or do you think Rye is an overwhelming favorite?

I have seen Rye play a few times and I am impressed with their team overall. There is nothing that says a small school can't beat the big schools (think Set). That said, Rye was not close against the section power 1 powers in 2007 (i.e. JJ 11 Rye 1). Section 1 needs 4-5 top programs to be a true a hot bed. I look forward to seeing Rye with a stronger squad in 2008 and join the likes of Town, Jay, and L/P.

  2. laxforlife86

i think there is no question in anyone's mind that rye is the class c favorite going in to the season but im not sure how overwhelming a favorite they are. rye, pv, byram, and pville all faceoff during the regular season and i am sure that all of these games will be dog fights until the last whistle blows, lets let the games tell the story, the season will most definitley be interesting to say the least

  3. Observer

Look Rye is a nice little program and prob the favorite in C again, but Section One was at it's best when Yorktown was in Class A, JJ in B and Somers in C. Rye is just not at the level of those programs. Section One will never have a team in Class C state final again unless Somers drops down to C like it was a few years back…

  4. Slacrosse

    OBSERVER

IN TERMS OF RYE VS "LEVEL OF PROGRAMS" OF YT/JJ AGREE WITH YOU AT THIS TIME BUT RYE'S BEEN BUILDING HUGE JUNIOR PROGRAM (+ DOOLEY COACHING)WHICH WILL ALLOW TEAM TO FOLLOW THESE GREAT "MODELS" AND CLIMB INTO THESE UPPER RANKS IN FUTURE. AS TEAMS GET BETTER AND BETTER HOPEFULLY WILL ALSO CAUSE THE COUPLE OF KIDS RYE LOSES TO PREP SCHOOL EVERY NOW AND THEN SEEKING "BETTER" LACROSSE, TO STAY IN TOWN

YES GETTING PAST A TOP ISLAND C TEAM IN SEMIS WILL BE CHALLENGE FOR A WHILE BUT NOT OUT OF QUESTION AS SAW LAST YR WHEN IN ONE OF RYE'S MOST SUB-PAR PERFORMANCES OF YR NEARLY BEAT SWR.

  5. NYLax10

    These are very uninformed posts.

First, Laxtown, what games did you see last year? Apparently only the JJ game where the Garnet's were without captain/starting goalie Colin Hart (The Journal News First Team Selection last year for goalie) and that game happened to also be the first time the team had been able to play on a full field (Their home field was destroyed by a storm so they practiced on short grass fields and in parking lots.) Did you happen to see when they played Yorktown, they were winning 8-5 at one point in the fourth quarter and then the refs gave the game away, Town didn't lead all game, then in the fourth quarter the refs decided to start calling everything against Rye. Town won in OT. Next Rye was leading LP early in the game against them, they just faded towards the end because 7 of their primary players were suspended for their highly publicized spring break trip. Still the game ended 6-4 (Altough, LP did put in two empty net goals at the end of the game). And in 2006 Rye was 19-3 with a win over Novasel and Somers.

Plus it was 2-1 at half time last year of the state-semifinals. The game ended 4-2, sounds like they were pretty close to getting to the state finals.

If you are going to make bold statements, and least make sure they're true.

  6. listen_up_now

    hey listen here now
im telling you Rye is in for a rude wke up call when they play some teams this year
they are not the only good team in class see i can see the young determined Putnam Vally team to take a championship away from them this year

  7. 12rock

Folks listen how quite it is over on the Pleasantville side. Coincidence I think not, we hear nothing from any of their crowd. I have watched some of their games (winter & tournaments) they played hard and look good . Do not count them out. If Putnam valley young guys do come through, they will be in the mix (yes this this is a big if). Class C watch for pleasantville

  8. Superseniorfan

Actually you can just watch Class C for a tight, tight, Sectional race this season. PV, Rye and P`Ville are going to make this very interesting this year. There`ll be some mighty entertaining Lacrosse in the Valley this season

  9. 12rock

Hey Joe i saw a scrimage today at New fairfield, Sooo.. what size shake do you want ..... Kidding but they could have been alittle tighter ….. catch all you next week Good luck to all

  10. erik

Ask the Lakeland head coach if he thinks Rye is the only contender in Class C…They tied Pleasantville 8-8 in a scrimmage today. Great contest. P'ville outplayed them the entire game with only 17 players. They looked hungry, in shape and most of all experienced. This local team of mine finally has juniors and seniors playing!

  11. Big Bear

Who are the top players on Pleasantville and PV?

  12. Joe Lombardi

Bear – Jeff spoke to the coaches from both PV and Put Valley and will have some info in a bit. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, how does Briarcliff look going into Tuesday's scrimmage at Yorktown?

  13. fan

rye will make everyone else in the league look foolish. Yahh Trick Yahh

  14. BigBadBear

FYI Big Bear not me…and we have lots to work on

  15. laxstar

    lol briarcliff srimmaging yorktown

  16. Joe Lombardi

I got my Bears mixed up. Let us know how it goes though, OK?

  17. sg2007

Briarcliff-Yorktown is obviously a huge mismatch; I'm even surprised that they'd schedule that scrimmage. From what I've heard, Yorktown has definitely bettered themselves from last-years semi-finals showing, whereas Briarcliff didn't get anywhere near getting out of the section (not to mention Yorktown's class A, while Briarcliff is C). I'm not sure why Briarcliff would put themselves through that kind of beating. With that said, it will be good for Briarcliff to gauge their play against the elite—but a huge waste of time for Yorktown, if you ask me.

Anyway, middies aside, is there any word on Rye's defense or attack? I'm pretty sure Rye had two other seniors alongside of TJ Smith last year—does anyone know how well they're being replaced? And with prostano moving to middie, where does that leave their attack?

  18. section one

    sg2007,

Im not sure if you were at the Briarcliff scrimmages this past weekend, but Greeley Rye Hen Hud and Somers attended. Briarcliff played with every team there and you should not overlook them. I don't know how you can criticize a team for scheduling a tough scrimmage and wanting to get better, doesn't make much sense. I'm not saying Briarcliff is anywhere near as talented as Yorktown because there not, not even close, but its worth it to go through that "beating."

  19. jojo

tell us some scores for the scrimmage with somers, Briacliff
    hen hud, rye, greeley.

  20. DM

Rye's defense is most likely going to be 2 seniors, Dylan Kindler and Brian Whiston and 1 junior in Donald Keough. It is going to be a challenge with the loss of TJ and Eddie, but those 3 guys are very talented players. Also playing long pole D-middy is Dan Marchesani. And with Prostano playing middy we will have a great offensive threat in robert santangelo. And the other 2 attackman, could possibly be marshall rogers, frank lorono, or andrew wood. Rye is looking forward to an great season.

  21. sg2007

    section one-

Of course I can't criticize a team for wanting to play a tough scrimmage—that's why I said it's good for Briarcliff to play suit up against the best. But what Joe asked was how does Brair look going to Yorktown, and my answer stays the same: over-matched.

  22. sg2007

    *section one-

Of course I can’t criticize a team for wanting to play a tough scrimmage—that’s why I said it’s good for Briarcliff to suit up against the best. But what Joe asked was how does Brair look going to Yorktown, and my answer stays the same: over-matched.

    I've gotta start proof-reading before I post…

  23. hebhammer

section one, i was at that scrimmage on saturday, and no offense, i don't think that briar is skilled enough to get anything out of playing yorktown. i saw your game against rye, and although the score was close, rye played all of their bench, and yet briarclif still couldn't get any offence. i'm not sure, but i don't think briar had a goal…

  24. hebhammer

how come what i just posted didn't go up?

  25. hebhammer

i guess i'll re-write it… i said that i was at that scrimmage on saturday, and saw the brair cliff rye game… although the score was close, briar had no offence at all… i don't think they had one goal… so i can see why playing yorktown could possibly not make much sense.

  26. Slacrosse

Rye beats Joel Barlow HS (CT) 5-2 in scrimmage. Scoring was fairly spread out between Gordon,McCormack and others. Rye’s 1st or 2nd top scorer from last year (Pastrano)out but expected back early next week.

Go Garnets. Good luck vs Wantaugh. Got to play as much top competition as possible to keep improving!

  27. Big Dog

    listen_up_now:

In a post about a week ago you spoke so highly of PV and told everyone to watch out. What are you thinking now…..18-5?
    What happened to the tigers?

  28. walley

can i hear everyones predictions for the class c section finals?

  29. LAX

PV will improve they just need a little more time for their inexperienced players to develop. Good thing they're in class C and don't have to play Brewster or JJ.

  30. 12rock

Big Dog …. The Valley got spanked no if's ands or buts …spanked. Brewster did not play great(they were solid) the Valley played bad. Big dog i would say that is even worse to lose because you just flat out played bad. "Listen_up" must be a player on the P.V. team … so lets see their mental toughness if they can bounce back next game

Hey Big Dog what team are you with or a fan of …. put it out there so we can watch you & "listen_up" go at it. If you feel you have the upper hand put it out there don't be afraid. Friendly jabber makes things interresting. We will all see which one of you has the last laugh.

  31. Briarcliff

Those people posting as Bcliff don't actually go to Briarcliff. So please do not take offense or anything any of the idiot posters say seriously. Thank you.

  32. listen_up_now

    BIG DOG
yes i do remember making that statement
we as a team whole did not show up to play
plain and simple they wanted it more than us
we have a young team and look for us to bounce back against hen hud we still have a little chip from last yea when losing 10-3 at half to them and coming back and holding them scorless in the second half only to lose 10-9 and it was a great game
    look for another one saturday
