In today’s Journal News and on LoHud.com, we have an in-depth look at the news we first told you about several weeks ago that there is no longer a grade requirement to be eligible to play in the Empire State Games.
In the past, you could not be a HS grad and compete on scholastic teams. Now, you can, but you must be 17 by Aug. 31.
Among those who comment on the new rule is North Rockland senior Danny Michella, who was a member of last year’s Hudson ESG team.

joe i think thats a terrible idea, i feel as if its taking away from some of the younger kids looking to play in college. what are your thoughts on this?
Dont worry it will never happen. No player who signs with a college team already will risk injury. Plus, I wonder how many coaches will allow their newly signed recruit to play? Especially at that level of competition. It will be few and far between. if anything it will help players who have yet to be signed somewhere. My opinion, it has little or no impact.

As we all know ESG lax practices are pretty grueling. Does it really make sense for someone who is a graduating senior to go through all that when his or her college choice has already been made? Probably not. I thought Danny Michella's comments in the story support that point of view as well. It will be interesting to hear what other recent players think.

The only thing to point out though is that plenty of college athletes compete on ESG open teams in other sports, such as hoops. However, those practices are not nearly as numerous or demanding as scholastic men's lax.
Speaking of the new ESG age limit, another member of last year's team who would be eligible to play on the team again this summer is Mamaroneck's Shane Ferguson. In today's Journal News and on LoHud.com, we have more information on our update posted earlier this week on the Daily Recruiting Updates page. Here is the link to the story.
