Kevin Drew celebrates after scoring one of his three goals in the Indians’ 11-10 double-overtime upset of Huntington in the Class B state semifinals at Hofstra on June 7. (Dave Kennedy/The Journal News)
Just talked to John Jay’s Kevin Drew, who was grabbing a bite to eat with teammate Chris Bocklet somewhere off the New Jersey Turnpike en route to the Jake Reed Blue Chip Lacrosse Camp in Maryland.
Drew, an athletic 6-foot-2 midfielder, told me that he has just orally committed to attend Syracuse for lacrosse with the possibility of also making the Orange’s basketball team. Drew’s father, Bill, is a 1978 Syracuse graduate who played basketball for the Orange.
Drew, who enjoyed a breakout junior season in which he scored three goals in John Jay’s 11-10 double-overtime upset of Huntington in the state semifinals, is likely to step into Syracuse’s lacrosse lineup right away, possibly as a defensive midfielder with the possibility of moving to offensive middie.
He paid two unofficial visits each to Syracuse and Hopkins and also considered North Carolina and Hofstra.

Westrock over Empires, Cuse over Hopkins, Maybe Kevin is into the color ORANGE
Not JL – Hold on. Kevin did not pick Westrock “over” Empires. Because he is going to Jake Reed this week and trying out for the U-19 World team next month  not to mention playing on the Westchester Hawks AAU team  he was unable to commit to the 18 practices the ESG team has. As you recall, he initially did want to give Empires a try nevertheless, but a wrist injury prevented him from continuing with tryouts.
How about telling us more about WestRock and its teams instead of the constant references/comparisons to the ESG team. Sound good?
Joe L. —Can you set up a separate blog for the Westrock program ? My son played on the team last year, and it was a great experience. Coach Javaney and Coach Vitolo were very good at giving all the players a good amount of playing time. Another blog has indicated that the U-16 team won the U-16 tournament at the Lehigh Laxfest this weekend. Congrats to Coach Lew and the current U-16 players. Good luck the remainder of the summer!
Laxxer – That’s not a bad idea. Keep in mind though there are several summer lacrosse programs, including the Renegades, who have expanded to four teams this year. In the meantime, folks from WestRock, the Renegades and other teams should feel free to post results, schedules, rosters for their teams on the summer league schedules link.
Wow! Syracuse University Lacrosse = John Jay North. 2009’s roster will feature red shirt seniors Pete Coluccini and Johnny Carrozza, junior Christian Daniello, and freshman K. Drew. Now they just need to start winning again. He’ll thrive in SU’s up-tempo system. It won’t be long before he’s inserted into that offense. Dodging midfielders are nearing extinction at the major DI level, but Drew’s ability to break down defenders and draw slides is truly astonishing…just ask Huntington. Congratuations K. Drew!
Wasabi – Don’t forget, Dan Sheeran plays football for ‘Cuse as well.
GO WESTROCK!!!! .CONGRATS TO DREW.IT’S NIICE HAVING OPTIONS IN LIFE.I’M SO GLAD WESTROCK HAS SO MUCH PRESS AND SHOULD. IT HAS SO MUCH TO OFFER FOR KIDS WHO LOVE TO PLAY LAX.BIG FAN OF “LEW” AND THE PROGRAM.
Is Drew going to get playing time at Cuse?? It looks as thought Daniello hasn’t and he had over 100 points his senior year at JJ.
No disrespect to Chris Daniello but in Kevin Drew i see a much more versitile player who brings much more than a big scoring threat to a team. His size will allow him to be a good fit on defensive side right away
Chillaxin – I agree. With his size (6-2) and speed, it would be hard to imagine him not getting PT right away as a d-middie. Coach Nick Savastano told me Syracuse feels Drew is ready to step right in at that position now and then possibly be shifted to short-stick middie down the line.
Also, Drew was a priority recruit of the following programs: Hop, ‘Cuse, UVa, Duke, UNC and Hofstra. It doesn’t get any better than that.
As far as playing basketball as well as lax, that should be interesting. After all, Syracuse starts the lax season in mid- to late-February  at that point, there is still about a month left in hoops season. But Drew made it clear to me today he’s going to Syracuse for lacrosse, and if playing hoops works out, then all the better. For more insights on Drew as a basketball player, check out Kevin Devaney’s thoughts on his commitment on Kevin’s “Varsity Insider”:http://kickoff.lohudblogs.com/2007/06/24/syracuse-gets-a-westchester-commit/ blog. And we will have a full report on Drew’s commitment, of course, on Monday in The Journal News and on LoHud.com.
Also FYI – Kevin alluded to the possibility of Drew playing football this fall. Well, word has it that the John Jay QB next season  whose name happens to be Chris Bocklet  is working on trying to get Drew to join the football team as a wide receiver this fall. Actually, Chris told me this a couple of weeks ago, and he can be pretty persuasive, so stay tuned, gang.
Joe- Chalrie Lockwood played both Basketball and Lax his senior season at SU. If Coach Boehiem wants him, trust me, he’ll be playing. SU hoops gerenate’s millons…...
Ric – Great point about Lockwood. Forgot about him actually. How did they handle that time-wse in February as far as practices/games between the two sports?
“Here’s our story”:http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070625/SPORTS02/706250329/1117 on Drew’s commitment that appeared today in The Journal News.
Good Question. Charlie came to us just before March Madness. He played with the hoops team until a week before the first game, which was UNC that season. He did say that while on the road the hoops guys did get to pick anything off the menu they wanted unlike when we traveled and went out for dinner having a set menu to choose from. He said he always orderd lobster. I actually was their the night he hit a 3 pointer for his first career points against U of Tenn. Went back up earl from break to watch that game because he had a chance to play in it they were saying. Also, Tim Byrnes played hoops in the as well in 2000. Can’t forget about Timmy!
Thanks Ric. Very interesting. If anyone else knows of anyone who played D-I lax and hoops, too, please give details. There are very few two-sport athletes in D-I let alone in seasons that are back-to-back. Probably the most prominent football/lax athlete recently I can think of is Doug Shanahan at Hofstra, who graduated in ‘01.
Ric – I also heard there was this guy that played football and lax at ‘Cuse named Jim Brown.
BTW – A lot of folks know Brown was an AA in football and lax at ‘Cuse. But not many know he also was a letterman at basketball for the Orange too. How about that?
I have heard of Jim Brown, heck, I met him last year at a lax game in the dome. Thier a few I can say played sports, but did you know that Pat Kerney DE from the Atlanta Falcons played Defense at UVA and now plays pro football? Imaging Casey Powell having to play against him in 96 and 97????? Poor Casey!
About the westrock team, it is great that everyone is talking about them, but honestly they only have one out of 3 teams that are any good. Their younger teams need improvement. But watch out for the the no limit ballers from up here and the ones in LI. They are going to be two of the best summer league teams in this area.
Strongisland – I don’t understand how you would know about the westrock teams. Were you at lehigh this weekend. 9-10 won their bracket, 7-8 acquited themselves very well going 2-2, losing one game to a lehigh valley team that was much older. And the u-18 team hasn’t played anybody yet. But since you’re a yorktown homer, i guess i shouldn’t be surprised.
LAXFAN… NICE TO HAVE OPTIONS!!! HV IS THE BEST RECRUITING SHOWCASE FOR THE $$. CONGRATS TO DREW!!! ANOTHER CUSE RECRUIT FOR SECT 1. AWESOME. WHY SO MANY HATERS ON EMPIRES???
