High School boys lacrosse in the Lower Hudson Valley

Pick your own teams

It’s the end of another entertaining season. There was no shortage of story lines, starting with what Mahopac, Yorktown and Bronxville accomplished. We had teams like Suffern, Lakeland/Panas, John Jay and Somers providing us with some pretty compelling subplots, too.

Now comes the hard part.

I have to figure out how to fit so many kids who deserve to be highlighted onto the Journal News All-Star teams. There are only 11 spots on the first team. Every season, a number of really good Westchester/Putnam kids get left on the sideline. I lean heavily on the Rockland coaches to pick the All-Stars on that side of the river since I don’t get an opportunity to watch as many teams over there. I’m getting input from the Westchester/Putnam coaches this week.

Just for kicks, put your own teams online.

You need three on attack, three at midfield, three on defense and one goalie. Throw in one specialist, a faceoff guy or long stick middie. Pick a player of the year and complete the list with coach of the year.

The Journal News All-Star teams will run in the July 3 papers.

State champs

In case you woke up wondering how the state championship games played out … Farmingdale needed overtime to beat Ithaca, 12-11, in the Class A title game. … Jamesville-DeWitt beat Garden City in overtime, 8-7, to win its second Class B crown in a row. … Cazenovia sent Bayport-Blue Point home with a 14-6 win in Class C.

Upon further review …

I’m sure the sting of two difficult losses can still be felt in Yorktown and Bronxville.

Both teams had an opportunity to win, and will no doubt be replaying the mistakes that prevented them from playing for a state title this weekend. Nobody should overlook the success both programs enjoyed this season. In recent years, the games against Long Island have been lopsided, so it was good to see the Section 1 teams battle right to the bitter end.

Garden City 10, Yorktown 8
Yorktown just made too many critical mistakes. The ball was on the ground way too much, ending important possessions. After the first six minutes, it might have been the worst game the Cornhuskers have played in the last month. And you have to give some credit to Garden City’s long poles, who got lit up early then settled down and forced Yorktown to score with 1-on-1 moves.

Bayport 9, Bronxville 8
The game ended late so the story did not make most of the editions this morning. Click here to read the online version. Bronxville was down early, but really fought hard to gain a comfortable lead. And then everything came apart in the fourth quarter. The Broncos needed one big play to steal back some momentum, but were looking to make the perfect set-up and kept throwing passes into traffic.

As for the site, White Plains again proved why it needs to be the home of postseason lacrosse in Section 1. The enthusiastic crowds were outstanding. The cheeseburgers were outstanding. I do have one issue. The staff at White Plains printed up nice programs with rosters of every team, but the state confiscated those because they were hawking $5 glossy programs. It’s a nice keepsake for those who took part, but asking fans who’ve already paid to get in to fork over extra cash for names and numbers is a ridiculous move, and I hope others are equally offended.

We’re not quite done here on the blog. I’m switching over to golf, but will post from time to time. We still have to pick the all-star teams, and I will post those on their run dates. That job is never easy. Again, thanks to the coaches and players for graciously providing so much content during the season. To all the folks at home who stopped by every day for a quick read, we very much appreciate your loyalty. The readership numbers were big, and that’s why you saw more lacrosse in The Journal News and on LoHud.com than any other sport this spring.
