We don’t usually go beyond the varsity lacrosse news, but a number of people have pointed out that Somers went 10-0 this season on the modified level.
Does that guarantee a successful future? No. But it certainly indicates the program is replacing the standouts it loses to graduation this season. (And yes, I saw the JoJo Marasco pass at least 20 times now. My kids nearly sad a bad word this morning watching it on a SportsCenter highlight segment that runs on the Disney Channel).
The next generation, Chris Marasco, was part of the 10-0 team.
Here’s the rest of the roster:
Armando Allan; Daniel Campbell; Daniel Carleton; Gibson Drysdale; Griffin Haas; Greg Krueger; Harrison Leggio; Daniel Levat; Marco Martin; Peter Mueller; John Penney; John Phillips; Michael Polvere; David Rubenstein. Tom Adamo; Billy Bauckham; Zachary Berkowitz; John Chrysogelos; Timothy Cousin; Marco Fiocco; Tyler Gadigian; Nick Kryza; Timmy Logan; Jared Mackey; Matthew Maliniak; Manny Mendoza; Lude Roediger; Brandon Spadafora; Kevin Turchick.
If your junior varsity or modified team had a great season, leave some details in a comment.

After showing up time and time again in big spots, Rob Santangelo proved he deserved a little more attention.
It appears the effort has not gone unnoticed.
Santangelo has given a verbal commitment to Fairfield University, and is planning to play for the Stags following a post grad year at Westminster along with Donald Keough, a Rye teammate who’s heading for Notre Dame.
“I think it’s going to be great,” Santangelo said. “I wanted to go there when I was a junior, but they didn’t want me. I needed to get better. This year I did what I need to in order to improve. I took a lot upon myself. So to get this over with this summer is awesome.”
Santangelo is back to working out after suffering a nasty hip pointer in the Section 1 Class C final against Putnam Valley. He’s close to full speed, but it required several weeks off. The persistent attackman was also looking at Penn and Bucknell.
Yes, he was bragging about getting a 1,320 on the SAT.
“I figured that Fairfield was the best fit for me,” said Santangelo, who dropped 30 pounds before the season. “I liked (head coach) Andy Copelan a lot.”

Jake Thomases had a good story today about the Clarkstown North boys lacrosse team’s dilemma: prom festivities or a game. Turns out seven seniors opted for prom and had to pay a pretty stiff price.
It seems like something like this crops up every year, but people still like to weigh in.
Check it out.

Actually, I’m off all next week dealing with some economic reality.
That’s a polite way of saying furlough.
Anyway, while I’m avoiding the Blackberry and resisting the urge to blog, I want you to list your very own All-Star teams. Do it by position just so you can experience the difficulty of wedging six great attackmen into three spots.
We have selected The Journal News All-Star Teams for Westchester and Rockland, but I don’t have the run dates for those lists.
Give me three on attack, three at midfield, three on defense, one at goalie, and one faceoff standout. (It seemed to create space for a more deserving middie this year, so that’s how I played it on this side of the river. The coaches in Rockland went with an extra long pole.)
Thanks to all of the coaches who provided input.
I’ll be in cyberspace again a week from tomorrow, so everybody behave yourselves until then.

In case you’re looking for something to do tomorrow at noon, you can stop by and talk golf for a couple of minutes before I head out to the U.S. Open.
Sam Borden will join me for the conversation.
Hey, we all have to have a hobby to pass time until next season. Here is the link. I’ll be spending a little more time on the golf course now, but we’re not done with lacrosse.
We still have the paper’s All-Star teams. I’ll let you know when I have a run date locked down for those, and we’ll list them here after they publish so everyone can offer a few words of praise. Or not. Picking three guys on attack this season is like stuffing 15 clowns in a VW Beetle.
Maybe later this week I’ll put up a post and let you do your picks by position. It takes a little bit of thought.
I will attempt to get to some of the summer league games when the schedule allows.
We’re still hoping to get the All-Section list to publish in The Journal News and here on the blog. I have to get my hands on a complete list.

The uniforms have all been cleaned and put away until next spring. There is plenty of time for debate, so here is the final set of power rankings for an entertaining season.
I got hung up for a while on a couple of issues.
First, the way Lakeland/Panas finished up against Mahopac and Yorktown had to count for something, and I did move the Rebels past Somers, which also came down the stretch in peak form. Second, the state title Iona won has to be factored in, but I didn’t want to give it a lot of weight because the Gaels only had to beat two decent teams. Still, they were playing great at the end, which made it possible to overlook some difficult losses early in the season.
I’m sure you’ve all got some talking points, as well, so go to it.
Lax to the Max Power Rankings
Power League
1. Yorktown 18-3
2. Lakeland/Panas 13-5
3. Somers 15-5
4.John Jay 10-9
5. Iona Prep 19-4
6. Putnam Valley 15-5
7. Rye 12-7
8. Mahopac 10-8
9. Greeley 10-8
10. North Rockland 12-6
B-C League
1. RCDS 17-2
2. Nanuet 15-3
3. Pelham 16-2
4. Nyack 12-6
5. Pleasantville 13-5

It’s a question that had to be asked, but everybody needs to remember that it’s very difficult to change style of play on short notice.
Putnam Valley only had 24 hours to prepare for Manhasset.
Running a methodical offense the way John Jay did to stay close for a couple of quarters against the Long Island power isn’t a terrible idea, but I’m not sure a team that piled up goals all season long against good competition would’ve had the patience required.
It’s kind of like surrendering before the game.
“We thought about it, and we wanted to slow the ball down, not to the point where we were stalling, but we wanted to possess,” Putnam Valley coach Brian Kuczma said. “We were playing a lot of defense. At this point, we were playing to win. We weren’t playing to make it a 10-5 game. We planned to do what we do and if they’re better than us, so be it.”
There’s your answer.

Dillon Chesnut was given a thorough going over yesterday evening at Hudson Valley Hospital Center. He was subjected to a number of tests, but the doctors apparently could not find any issues that might have contributed to the pains the Putnam Valley senior was experiencing in his side on the way to yesterday’s Class C state semifinal game against Manhasset.
“He’s doing fine,” Tigers athletic coordinator Brian Hogaboom said this morning. “He was released from the hospital. They didn’t find anything wrong. Everything came back negative.”
Chesnut was even able to attend Senior Award Night where he picked up an English award. I’m told he’s as skillful with a pen as he is with a stick. Uh, oh. Competition.
